He went all the way to the bottom (663 ft). No, it is not safe and I urge
anyone who wants to try deep (or any) freediving to take at least one
freediving class. This guy is one of the top 0.001% of freedivers on the planet
and knows what he is doing.
There is little risk of getting the bends. He is taking a lungful at the
surface and holding it, not breathing compressed air. Check out his chest when
he poses at the bottom and you will see how much that volume of air has
compressed. The BIG risk in freediving is shallow water blackout. This happens
when your pp of O2 drops. Usually the increase in the pp of CO2 causes the urge
to breath. With training, one can push past that urge but it is a very
dangerous place to be. Hyperventilating is a bad idea because it fools your
body into crossing that "breath NOW" threshold and you wind up blacking out and
convulsing underwater.
Damn, I wish I was in the water right now.

It's hard to tell how deep he goes, but is this safe? I'm no diver, and
certainly no expert, but isn't this dangerous from the bends perspective?

It can and does happen to folks who do repetitive deep dives (i.e. sponge
divers). The nitrogen levels in the blood build up and take time to off-gas.

No, you start and end with the same air in your body that you started with when
freediving. The bends are caused by you absorbing nitrogen into the blood that
you are breathing at depth.
That’s the quick, simple explanation…

Fyi, he didn't actually free dive the full depth. the breath hold record is
less than half the depth of this hole. it was filmed over a few days.
this note, from the guy himself, accompanies the video:
"FREE FALL: World champion freediver Guillaume Nery special dive at
Dean's Blue Hole, the deepest blue hole in the world filmed entirely on
breath hold by the french champion Julie Gautier. This video is a
FICTION and an ARTISTIC PROJECT. Edited by BLUENERY (c). Music: ARCHIVE - you
make me feel."
Of course it is still very impressive. David Locklear posted a link to this
video a few days ago.

I've spent some time Googling to find info about the finding of six
murder victims in a "cave" near Cancún, Quintana Roo, on June 7.
Pretty much everything is just copies of two press reports, one in
English and one in Spanish. There were four men and two women, all of
whom had traces of drugs in their bodies. Initial stories that three
of them had had their hearts cut out were apparently untrue; they had
just been stabbed so many times in the chest that it initially looked
that way. No clue about what cave it might have been. Some reports say
"natural cave," but from others it appears to have been a culvert
under a federal highway. Anybody know any more? -- Mixon

Spain to reopen access to prehistoric cave paintings
(AFP) – 7 hours ago
MADRID — Spain's Altamira cave, which contains some of the world's most
important prehistoric paintings, will reopen to the public at the end of the
year for the first time since 2002, the government said Tuesday.
A panel of experts will determine how many people can enter the cave located
some 30 kilometres (19 miles) west of the northern city of Santander without
damaging the paintings, Culture Minister Angeles Gonzalez-Sinde told reporters.
The cave, dubbed the "Sistine Chapel of prehistoric art", is covered with
paintings of bulls, bisons, boar and other animals etched in red, yellow and
black that are estimared to be at least 14,000 years old.
Miguel Angel Revilla, head of the government of the northern region of
Cantabria, said he hoped US President Barack Obama would be the first person to
visit the cave when it reopens to the public. "I have already written the
invitation letter, and in English," he said.
The cave was first closed to the public in 1977 because the paintings were
being damaged by the carbon dioxide from the breath of large numbers of
visitors.
It was reopened in 1982 but with restrictions on the number of people who could
visit it and remained open until September 2002. Over the past eight years
people have been able to visit a replica of the cave located nearby in the
northern town of Santillana del Mar which has drawn 2.5 million visitors since
it opened. The cave, which was discovered in the late 19th century, was
declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
