I am only posting this here because I feel the news media is not making
this info readily available, and many Cavetex readers have friends down
in northern Mexico.

It has been 4 days since Hurricane Alex came ashore.

Some of you may recall driving across a bridge over the
Guayalejo River:

    http://www.hoytamaulipas.net/imagennotagrande.php?foto=6958

That was a one lane bridge the last time I went over it, if I am thinking
of the same bridge.

News reports are coming in that about 200,000 people have been
without potable water in Monterrey for 4 days now. 30 people
living near Huasteca Canyon are unaccounted for, but that could
just mean nobody knows where they have taken refuge. The
suburb Santa Catarina of Monterrey is reporting major damage
on some streets. And there are lots of places reporting no
electricity.

The Saltillo-Monterrey highway has re-opened, but some lanes are
closed. People have reported being stuck in their car for 29 hours.

Ironically, with all the devastation, the news reports are still focused
on the cartel crime, the elections, and the World Cup.

One report claims 15 to 20 central-americans were killed in S.L.P. on a train
in a rock-slide as they were riding cargo style to the U.S.

My sister-in-law and niece and nephew live in a southern suburb of Monterrey
called "Las Fuentes." They called my wife to tell her that some streets are
tore up and some cars are covered in debris.

    http://www.milenio.com/sites/www2.milenio.com/files/images/mex-df-0_8.jpg

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni8jKUMJ6vg

One report claims the road between Ciudad Victoria and San Fernando is
permanently closed at the Pilon River ( this is just northeast of
Ciudad Victoria )

Below are various photos showing the magnitude of the mess to be cleaned
up:

http://spanish.peopledaily.com.cn/mediafile/201007/05/F201007050832268357842525.jpg

http://www.mnoticias.com.mx/fotos/seguro%20para%20reconstruccion-03%2007%2010.jpg

It is starting to look like anything along the river banks of the
entire state of Tamaulipas is
most likely damaged, as reports are being posted that most of the
rivers broke their banks.

Some towns are reporting that they can't get gasoline, which I presume
means the pumps
don't have electricity. There are reports that some train tracks are
messed up. There are reports of price gouging on canned foods.
Some reports are using
word like: chaos and despair.

In some places, bridges are closed simply out of precaution that their
foundations have
been weakened. A lot of people accustomed to internet access are
having difficulty
finding it.

The dam at Lake Vicente Guerrero is said to be at 80 percent of its
design capacity,
which I guess means that if it were to fail, there would be quiet a
mess downstream.
Evacuations have been ordered in some rural areas.

What surprises me most about all these reports is that it looked like
to me the major
brunt of the storm was south of the areas reporting destruction, as I
mentioned in my
1st or 2nd report that the El Abra range was getting pounded. I
don't see anything
in the news at all about towns like "Antiguo Morelos," and "El Naranjo,"
but there really are no large towns in that part of the Sierra Madres,
just lots
and lots of karst.

This was a big storm event. In addition to the state of Tamaulipas,
it left a mess
down in Oaxaca, and major damage in parts of Nuevo Leon, and even Coahuila.

We had localized street flooding in parts of Houston after the storm
moved north,
and there were people here who drove off into deep water.

Any word yet from the cavers at Laguna de Sanchez ? I don't think
they are having
fun, but I bet they will have an exciting trip report to read.

I talked with Jim Kennedy sometime around midnight. He and the rest of
the crew hike/climbed out via old foot trails 8 hours back to a main
road and holed up in Monterrey at Erick Gonzalez' parents' place. The
plan is to catch the bus back to Texas today. He will call when they
cross the border and we'll dispatch some trucks to fetch them up from
the terminal. We should see them Monday evening.

He confirmed that they had 3 vehicles: his, Gary Franklin's, and RD
Milholllin's which were left packed with wet gear at a friend's house
in the mountains. Expecting lots of mold when the trucks are
eventually opened--sometime in the near future.

I say again: DO NOT PANIC.

I just got a call from George. They are catching the bus at 9am and
should be in Laredo about noon?

Does anyone know exactly how many people were on the trip? This would help in
determining how many cars will be needed, especially since it sounds like some
have already dispatched.

So far I have heard of 5 but I am sure that is not all, since Gary's van was
one of the cars taken:
Jim Kennedy
Gary Franklin
RD Millhollin
Matt Turner
George

They, ugh, weren't going to a bus station. They planned to take the
TouriMex (or whatever it's called) directo bus all the way to San
Antonio, Austin, Forth Wort. They should have been at the border for a
good while now. It's not 3 hours from Monterrey. I've tried calling
Jim on both sides of the river but have had no luck. Maybe his
battery's dead? I expect him to call me from Laredo after they cross
into Texas. I'm guessing at some of this.

I just spoke with him on the bridge, tambien. It seems that RD and
George are on other buses with other pickups & plans. Also, 4 others
going to SA and then Austin on another bus. Jim and 3 others on an
OmniBus, not TourMex, so we don't know where it'll arrive in Austin.
He will call me from SA so I can dispatch rides for 4 only. Everybody
should be in cell phone range now if you want to call and coordinate.

it is OK to PANIC. It would offer some comic relief. Keep up the good

Elton Prewitt sent a link to photos of the rain and flooding in West
Texas--making caves. He reported 4 more inches over night and it's
raining there now according to the radar.

The history of exploration in Wookey Hole is the history of cave diving, from bottom-walking in Siebe, Gorman hardhat gear through oxygen rebreathers, the rapid transition to open-circuit compressed air in the early 1960s, and finally to closed-circuit, mixed-gas rebreathers. Actually, the earliest attempt at cave diving in England was in Swilden's Hole, whose stream contributes to the River Axe that resurges at Wookey, although no connection has been made. The dives in some of Swilden's numerous sumps are also discussed in this book, but there is also a book, very similar in design to this one, on the first hundred years of exploration in Swilden's that was published in 2007 by the Wessex Cave Club and reviewed in the May 2008 NSS News.

The text of the first twenty-one chapters of this book was assembled from many contributions by participating divers for the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Wookey diving in 1985, but it was never widely circulated. Here it is combined with seven chapters written more recently and many color illustrations, including many historic maps and photographs. The last of the original twenty-one chapters contains predictions by Oliver Wells about the future of cave-diving technology as seen in 1985. It is somewhat confusing that the chapter is illustrated by photos of Bill Stone's projects in later years, but they do confirm many of Wells's predictions. By 1985, the last known sump in Wookey had been penetrated to a depth of 65 meters (see NSS News, March 1986). Since then, the sump has been extended in length by a couple hundred meters, with a maximum depth of 90 meters. It is remarkable that different owners of the show cave have been hospitable to cave divers all those years, despite a couple of drownings. Of course the work generated a lot of publicity in broadcast and film.

Anyone with an interest in cave diving should read this book. The price is not unreasonable for such a large, colorful, and hardbound book, but getting it over here from England is expensive. Ordering it from cavedivinggroup.org.uk would cost you an additional £23.66 for shipping, making the total nearly $75. In the US, Speleobooks has a limited number of them for $62 plus $4.95 for shipping.--Bill Mixon

Does anyone know who will be leading the beginner's trip to Whirlpool tomorrow
evening? I spoke to Heather about a month ago and signed up for 8 of us to go,
however I just found out that she is out of the country. I'd like to touch
base with the leader, and get a phone number if possible. Can someone point me
in the right direction?

Thanks,
~Marlena

I am currently in the Alpine area and want to visit Short 'n Sweet Cave.
I last visited it in the early 70's when I was a member of the Paisano
Grotto at Sul Ross. I can't remember the directions or contact to get
there. All I remember is that it was a nifty little break-down cave
between Alpine and Marfa South of Hwy 90. We had to scramble down about
50' into a canyon to get to it. Can someone refresh my memory on that?
I believe it to be in Presidio County (or Brewster). I also think the
property may have belonged (or leased) to UT as there was a radio telescope out
there.

Many Thanks, Mike Furrey

Gary,

Welcome back. That should be a very interesting program. After all the email speculation and sketchy reports about the fate of this trip, I'm sure there'll be lots of people looking forward to the trip report.

Authorities have closed off the tunnel that leads to the town of Real
de Catorce.

Parts of the tunnel were said to be caving in after the rain of
Alex passed through.

This from Marty Vicknair. Read bottom-up.

The sinkhole is about 35-40 yards across. It is only about 20
feet from eating the clinica. The arroyo above the tunnel has
completely overwhelmed the drainage system, rocks are tumbling into
the side of the clinica. Cars are pushed around, puestos are knocked
over... the arroyo is now draining into the tunnel. Pictures to come
in the morning.

There are 2 and 3 foot holes gouged out of the streets from the
raging torrents. The parking lot is about half consumed by the
sinkhole. There are a couple of cars dangling on the edge, it was too
dark and raining to see if any have fallen in yet...

Marty Vicknair We just got about 3.25 inches (8.25cm) of rain
in about an hour and a half. The street in front was a river, with
large rocks tumbling down. I´m walking down to the tunnel to check
things out...

The tunnel has reopened. The tunnel has been open and closed
various times since the storm started. I've heard reliable reports of
at least a meter (3ft) of water inside. Last night a wall fell inside
the tunnel, blocking drainage and causing flooding to somewhere
between 1 and 2 meters. The attached picture is of the sinkhole in the
parking lot. It is about 10 meters across, and about 10 meters deep.
You can see that the system of underground drainage for the arroyo
above the tunnel has been breached.

The padre just announced over the town's loudspeakers that the
tunnel is closed due to a collapse. The able-bodied are requested to
bring shovels to Ogarrio to assist.

Thanks to everyone who's replied to this. We will still be having the Whirlpool
trip as there are 15 people currently signed up and just because we're(both
myself and Matt Zaldivar another one of the leaders who was also on the same
laguna trip) sore doesn't mean we'll ruin it for possible new cavers.

As for the Laguna de Sanchez trip I wouldn't call it ill fated. Yeah it didn't
turn out as we planned it to, but really what great adventure goes to plan?
Yeah
we didn't get all of our goals checked off and we had to leave some vehicles
for
a while down there, but all of us got back safe and sound. There were no
injuries...well except my pride maybe. So I'd say this was a very successful
trip.  Note, don't name the first cave found on a trip "Rock me like a
hurricane", it might not end the way you have it planned.  I'd like to thank
Crash again for leading this trip, I know it was a hard pill to swallow at
times. I'd also like to thank everyone on here who were concerned for our
safety, this is exactly the primary reason I love caving.

Matt,
Glad you're all back safe and sound.

Ill-fated may be harsh term, but I do think you all should consider making
abeyance to Oztotl when you return for your vehicles. He seems to be
pissed. We used to burn copal in the entrance to Cueva del Brinco at the start
of
an expedition in order to gain the good graces of the nether spirits.
Even Ediger joined in on the pagan ritual as I recall (-- and I never saw
Ediger panic either). Seems to have worked; the cave later became part of the

Purificacion System and everyone seems to have had a good time (except that
Chris Kerr fellow but he didn't burn any copal ! - but that's another
story.)

Barring copal, you could try leaving a bottle of tequila and a dead cell
phone....

Jerry.

"Abeyance"? That means cessation. Try obesience: a sign of reverence or submission or shame or greeting ..

George said Jim throws a helluva hurricane party! He is ready to go back!
Glad you all had a good trip. I am enjoying being regaled with the tales.
Thanks to whichever Matt I called from Laredo that told me y'all were at the
border. Happy caving!
