Glad y'all made it back safe and sound, Matt!
Speaking of tales, who would like to document this "memorable" trip for
The TEXAS CAVER?
I was thinking you could work in the word "Hurricaving" somewhere in the
title.
Of course, we would need LOTS of pictures.
Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who's replied to this. We will still be having the
Whirlpool trip as there are 15 people currently signed up and just
because we're(both myself and Matt Zaldivar another one of the leaders
who was also on the same laguna trip) sore doesn't mean we'll ruin it
for possible new cavers.
As for the Laguna de Sanchez trip I wouldn't call it ill fated. Yeah it
didn't turn out as we planned it to, but really what great adventure
goes to plan? Yeah we didn't get all of our goals checked off and we had
to leave some vehicles for a while down there, but all of us got back
safe and sound. There were no injuries...well except my pride maybe. So
I'd say this was a very successful trip. Note, don't name the first
cave found on a trip "Rock me like a hurricane", it might not end the
way you have it planned. I'd like to thank Crash again for leading this
trip, I know it was a hard pill to swallow at times. I'd also like to
thank everyone on here who were concerned for our safety, this is
exactly the primary reason I love caving.
Goodnight,

Does anyone know who will be leading the beginner's trip to Whirlpool
tomorrow evening? I spoke to Heather about a month ago and signed up
for 8 of us to go, however I just found out that she is out of the
country. I'd like to touch base with the leader, and get a phone number
if possible. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,

Jerry,
We sacrificed all manner of items to Oztotl, unfortunately it was the
rain/weather god who was pissed at us.....or on us mattering on your outlook.
Mark,
I'll get with the group and we'll figure it out. You will definitely get a good
article out of it.
Sheryl,
Sorry I couldn't talk longer my cell phone was dying and we had to get off the

At the UT Grotto meeting Wednesday night I'll have copies of two new
books from the Association for Mexican Cave Studies for sale:
AMCS Activities Newsletter 33, June 2010, 126 pp. $10 softbound.
AMCS Bulletin 21, Marcus Gary's dissertation on the Zacatón cenotes in
Tamaulipas, 114 pp with color illustrations throughout. $14 softbound.
There will be hardbound versions of both those books available for $20
and $24, respectively. Unfortunately, they aren't scheduled to be
delivered until Thursday. If you might want a hardbound instead,
please hold off and don't buy a softbound just because they hardbounds
are a day late.
Both hardbound and softbound versions of both books will be available
at the Pond Party at Stricklandia on Saturday. I'll also have some of
recently published AMCS Reprint 11, the Mexican field trip guidebooks
from last summer's International Congress of Speleology, for $10. I
won't be actively peddling books from a table (it's a party, after
all), but will have them in my car. -- Mixon

I have a pond in my backyard that has diagnosed by my favorite aquatic
biologist, Mr. Cobb, with ick. I need to find out how many gallons of water
it holds so I can figure out how much anti-ick stuff to get. Since, I am no
adept at these types of calculations, I thought I would see if you folks
could figure it out for me. J
It is 8' in diameter and 24" deep. That is 8 foot across and 24 inches in
depth. Go!

pi * radius2 * height
Thus 3.14* (4)2 * 2= 100.48 cubic ft
1 cubic foot = 7.48051948 US gallons
100.48* 7.48= 751.64 gal

Hmm... fun!
I'm getting something like 750 gallons, which is:
Volume: (pi*r^2*h) * 7.46 (gallons in cubic foot) ... or am I off in
my math??
Now... how many gallons in Whirlpool Cave...? Go!

It's quite nice the assistance all provided for a caver in need of an answer.
That's the kind of off-topic use of the remailer that is quite useful and, in
my opinion, very appropriate.
The kind of reply that is NOT valuable is giving the answer as 0.0023
acre-feet, 18 barrels, 2.84 cubic meters, or 6,000 pints for the benefit of
hydrologists, Gulf oil spill experts, non-US cavers, or drinkers in a British
pub.

The answer to Gill's question, 100.48 cubic ft, was given in Wesley's message,
which actually was the first message posted with an answer to Sheryl's question.
The main question remaining in my mind about this little OT exercise is whether
Sheryl's pond has a uniform depth of 24" or whether 24" is the maximum depth of
a pond with nonuniform depth. The calculations provided by Wes and Dave assume
a uniform depth of 24 inches. Most ponds I've seen, however, have nonuniform
depth and are less deep near the edges than they are in the middle. If this is
the case with Sheryl's pond and if 24" is the maximum depth, then the pond
volume will be less than the value calculated (approx. 750 gal.) and how much
less will depend on the shape of the pond bottom.
So, Sheryl, which is it? Uniform or nonuniform? And while you're checking the
shape of the pond bottom, see if you can find a passage connecting it to a
cave, so we can justify having this discussion on Texascavers. :-)

So, I guess that cubic furlongs wouldn't be the most useful measure?

This is a review of a tiny flashlight that I purchased at Walgreens today for
under $5.
http://images1.tacticalstore.com/750-500-ffffff/opplanet-energizer-poket-flashlight-enl33ae.jpg
This light gets my endorsement,
partly because it is inexpensive and partly because it is a practical
versatile light.
It is probably too big to use as a keychain light, however, it is
small enough that 2 of them
could fit in your shirt pocket.
This light could easily be duct-taped to the helmet and you could
probably duct-tape 3 or 4
of them to your helmet.
It would be a good back-up light to carry in your pack for a dry cave.
It would be usable as your main source of light in Airman's Cave.
It is a great light for the glovebox, purse, shirt-pocket, etc.
It is the size of the old cigarette lighter's except longer.
While there is no way to make the light water-resistant, you could make it more
rugged by wrapping some duct-tape around it.
The switch is spring loaded so you can slightly push it to get a brief
spurt of light, and this
also makes it so that you have to push hard to get it to turn on,
which is great because
it doesn't turn on accidentally.
Also, the light stands all by itself on a flat surface pointing light
upwards at an angle.
Not sure what good that is, but it is something other lights do not do.
Also, the light is easy to hold in your mouth, so your hands can be
free when climbing
or reading a map.
I imagine this light will be found on sale someday somewhere for $ 1.99.
I would recommend this product.
With a possible tropical storm approaching, I would say run out and get you one,
before the shelves empty out. I bought the last one at the store I was at.
