Well, David, I hate to burst your bubble, but the storm is so far
away, no one knows where it is going. Predicting hurricane tracks is like
predicting weather in TX. You can make a guess, but you will be wrong. If
you are right, it is an anomaly and the weather will change so you are wrong
anyway. I'll worry when it is closer and believe the models when it is
imminent.

The tropical depression that is currently north of eastern Cuba
is forecasted to become Tropical Storm Bonnie tonight.
It is headed for the Beaumont area just like Hurricane Rita,
to make landfall on Monday night, and be in Texarkana,
by Tuesday.
This could effect cavers heading on a road-trips, maybe
even towards Arkansas, as it could dump a lot of rain.
I can't leave before the storm passes, or changes course and heads
further south for Port Aransas ( just kidding Sheryl ).
If the storm moves up the coast along the route that cavers are
driving to the convention, that could make for a 2,000 mile wet
journey.

i got a 5 month old mini caver that will need to go caving for the first time

Dave,
I only know of four Austin area caves and two are not suitable for a one year
old. Just to say she has been in one, take her to Avery Ranch Cave or Dyes?
Ranch Treasure Cave. Both are in Cedar Park and only about 100 feet long with
no hiking as they are both in the middle of residential neighborhoods Avery is
the better and easier of the two.

Surely you'll want her to remember her first caving trip? If so you're
gonna have to wait until she's about 3.

Avery Ranch and Dies Ranch Treasure Cave are both open to the public on Cave
Day in Cedar Park, which occurs twice a year.
Both would be good for the mini caver, but Avery does have more formations to
be sure.

I would highly reccommend Sotano de los Golindrinos for infants. Anything less
would just be bad parenting. And just imagine the lifetime of bragging rights:
"my dad took me to and DOWN Golindrinos when I was 16 months old....."
It would be easy to rig some type of suspension harness to suspend her below
you for the rappel down and climb back up.

I'm no expert on any of this, but is not all or part of Hispanola a well
traveled craton? There are other otherwise ancient inexplicable critters
there too like the solenodon. Old world monkeys have tails too, but
diverged
from new world monkeys a very long time ago. Most people think Primates
are a
recent group but that is just not the case. If I am not mistaken they
have
been around since before the dinosaurs looked up to see the comet. No
time
to fact check any of this.
Here in Hogtown we are crushed. Wes was the best, larger than life, a

He will be sorely missed!

As far as commercial caves go, I like to recommend
Alabaster Cavern's in Oklahoma.
This is a good first cave for anybody that already has an interest
in caves, because it has a different speleogenesis than
most commercial caves.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/9232573@N02/2563288068/in/set-72157605507013982/
According the the authority of Wikipedia, it is the largest natural
gypsum cave in the world that is open to the public.
( as opposed to the largest un-natural gypsum cave ?? )

I wish it were not such a long drive. I want to take my daughter
there.

This might preclude Dave from taking his daughter there; I somehow
suspect that a 5 month old does not already have an interest in caves,
she probably has no idea they exist! ;-)
