I need your new address, as the old one (3018 Burleson Rd) is bouncing.

Your TC awaits!

Thanks,

Mark

Tim,

I generally agree with you about this preference. There are, however, practical reasons why some grottos care more about collecting dues and raising money for the grotto treasury than do other grottos. Some grottos need to collect money, because they have ongoing expenses, such as renting space for grotto meetings or paying printing cost, and perhaps even mailing costs, for a grotto newsletter. Other grottos hardly care at all about dues and fundraising, because they have practically no expenses.

A good example of the latter is the UT Grotto (which you, no doubt, remember), where members are encouraged from time to time to pay dues if and when they feel like it whenever they get around to doing so. I recall once when I was Vice Chairman of the UT Grotto for two consecutive years and didn't get around to paying my dues until they reelected me for the second term. They usually don't care much about collecting dues, because they have almost no expenses, except for occasional donations of their meager surpluses to caving related causes. Whenever more significant contributions are needed for specific caving related projects or causes, fundraising by UT Grotto members usually is done in a way that does not involve Grotto funds or any official Grotto action.

I always liked the explanation given to me for low grotto dues, or no dues for that matter. One was that the avoidance of creating a fund also avoids the political arguments over the disposition of that fund. The real mission of the grotto is simply to exist and have meetings to socialize, spread information, and stay connected as a community. To further that end a phone list is kept, and that's worth paying for.

All other pursuits are best conceived, paid for, and carried out by individuals and/or groups as they see fit.

Hey -

A bunch of us are headed to the High Guads over memorial day (with
permits). It has been 5 or 6 years since I've done the drive so I would
love a good road log if anyone has one to share.

Many thanks!

Joe

The Government Canyon karst project is happening next weekend - the 29th and
30th. You can pick your own dig or your own area to ridgewalk - and there
are caves to explore and survey.

We will meet at 9:00 both mornings in the parking lot of the
Volunteer/Research Station.

Camping is available. Contact me to set it up.

Directions to the Government Canyon Karst Project:

Find the intersection of U.S. 16 and Loop 1604 in northwest Bexar County
(clearly shown on any state highway map). Drive 2 miles north on U.S. 16 to
the third traffic light and turn left onto FM 1560 (there is a Shell station
on the corner). Follow 1560 for 3 miles till you see the sign for GCSNA.
Follow the arrow to the right and drive 2 more miles to the sharp left turn
in the road. The gate to GCSNA is straight ahead. Enter at the gate and then
take the first right. There is an unlocked gate that will need to be opened
and then closed behind you. Continue to the Volunteer/Research Station,
where we will meet.

Thanks,
