The sun is headed southward toward the Tropic of Capricorn as winter
approaches. As part of the government's meddling in the natural order of
things it is time to set your clocks backward 1 hour before you go to bed on
Saturday night as Daylight Saving Time ends.

It is also a good time to change the batteries in all Smoke Alarms and CO
detectors. You should also test all devices regardless of how they are
powered. Another thing to consider is the age of your devices. If they are
more than 10 years old then they should replaced with newer models. And
finally make sure you have the proper number of devices in your house.
Current recommendations include at least one smoke detector on each level
of your house/apartment as well as one outside of each bedroom. In the
event of an emergency the more devices there are the better.

Do you have fire extinguishers in your residence? When was the last time
you checked their charge level? Most have an indicator showing the current
charge so if the charge is too low you should replace the extinguisher.
Also, check to make sure you have the proper type for the area to be
protected.

If you have kids living in the house it's also a good idea to have a fire
(or other emergency) escape plan, to include a meeting place somewhere
outside the house---not too close and not too far--that they can find in the
dark.
