Here is a quote from a politcal candidate in an interview running for Dallas
County Judge:
"I love to dive in caves. There is just something about being in a
place very few people have ever been.
It's not uncommon for us to squeeze through small crevices as we
explore the caves"
Wade Emmert is the candidate's name.

$1,000 reward for cave vandals, thieves
By Anita
Miller
News Editor
San Marcos — A reward of $1,000 has been
offered for information leading to the conviction of anyone involved in
vandalism and theft at a protected cave site in South San Marcos.
Jon
Cradit of the Edwards Aquifer Authority said sometime around July 22, several
people illegally entered the site, which is protected habitat of a federally
endangered species.
The offenders cut through a pipe gate to get inside,
then stole or damaged thousands of dollars worth of scientific equipment,
scrawled graffiti on cave walls and left behind trash and cigarette
butts.
Cradit said the damaged equipment “is important to water quality,
aquifer monitoring and endangered species.”
Because of the sensitive
nature of the site, Cradit would not reveal its exact location but said he has
already spoken with, and established rapport with, neighbors in the
area.
“Neighbors actually did see some guys” in the area days prior to
when Cradit believes the break-in took place, he said, adding that the
neighbors
confronted the strangers.
“There were several different types
of very
expensive water quality instruments” damaged, he said. Additionally, a “job
box”
containing electrical power equipment and battery pack was
smashed.
Because the site is a protected habitat of an endangered
species, Cradit said the federal Department of the Interior was notified of the
crime.
San Marcos Police are investigating. Anyone with any information
is being asked to contact Cradit at (210) 477-8523 or e-mail j...@tcmacaves.org.

"Visions Underground: Carlsbad Caverns through the Artist's Eye." Lois
Manno. Rio Grande Books, no place; 2009. ISBN 978-1-890689-95-7. 8 by
10 inches, 177 pages, softbound. $19.99.
The majority of the art in this book is in fact photography,
although I suppose some old hand-tinted postcard photos can be
considered partly painted. I don't think any of the actual paintings
of scenes in Carlsbad Cavern (called Carlsbad Caverns throughout) will
ever be of any interest except in connection with the cave, but many
of the photographs are nice. Some of the best were taken either
outdoors or in other caves in the national park, especially
Lechuguilla. Paintings and color photographs are of course printed in
color. A tremendous plus is the first publication of a collection of
black-and-white photographs taken by Ansel Adams, who is said to have
found working in the cave very difficult. Given Adams's reputation for
outdoor photography, I wasn't surprised to find that my favorite among
them here is a surface shot of a park building, but one photo of the
Big Room is very nice. The author has arranged things pretty much
chronologically, from the 1920s to today's cave photographers, and
there is extensive explanatory text.
I can't speak to the fidelity of the reproduction of the
paintings, but most of the photographs are well reproduced, though
there isn't a really solid black anywhere in the book. The major
disappointment is the reproduction across a two-page spread of the
famous 2400-flashbulb 1952 color photograph of the Big Room by Tex
Helm. When I was paging through the book, I immediately recognized
that it must have been made by scanning an old, very faded print. When
I read the book, I was astonished to see the claim that the colors had
been restored using Photoshop. No they weren't.--Bill Mixon

According to that article, the deceased caver's name was:
Mauricio Duran Nava, age 27.
I can't speculate on what happened, but based on my visits to 3 river
caves in the area,
a caver needs to have some kind of flotation device, and in many cases
a lightweight flexible,
foam vest is a good idea. You have to be able to disconnect from
your pack easy, if you somehow
get it tangled in something. You need a pack that either is
completely water-tight or one that quickly
drains, otherwise you are carrying a very heavy sack that can drown you easily.
A wet-suit will help you float, but in some of those caves a wet-suit
is just too hot, as you are walking for hundreds of meters in knee
deep water.
And you have to watch the weather, as you are entering the cave, not
the day or 2 before when you
are leaving the house. Having portable radar gadget is a good idea,
but you will most likely need a gadget that uses cell-phone ( meaning
wi-fi not much good in remote areas ) and you will need a cell tower
in the vicinity of your camp or at least along the drive to the cave.
It is a good idea to practice canyoneering techniques above ground in
the light before trying
them underground in the dark. But that is kind of hard to do if
you live far from a canyon with a stream
in it.
River caving is my favorite kind of caving. But it is obvious that
additional precautions need to be taken.
An experienced guide familiar with a cave, could probably take
newbies. But the average caver going into a
river cave should try to have some friends along who have some caving
experience.
I highly recommend that everybody visit the cave Chonta someday.
That is a great trip.

A few years ago, there was a post about walkie-talkies and how the package
advertising was claiming 8 mile range and others claiming up to 16 mile range.
Since then, the numbers have gradually increased.
Now, similar radios are claiming 36 miles of range on their
product advertising.
Yet the wattage doesn't appear to be different.
Has anything changed ?
Here is an example:
http://www.midlandradio.com/Two-Way-Radio.BS3/GXT1000VP4
The newest walkie-talkies have all sorts of bells and whistles:
Lithium-Ion batteries, powersaving
circuitry, Bluetooth headsets, car chargers, dual-radio chargers,
digital screens, LED flashlight,
digital voice recorder, USB charging port, etc.
Here is an example:
