The "News Focus" section of the 12 December issue of Science has a two- page non-technical article about the spread of juniper and other woody plants through former grasslands in the southwestern US and the resulting decrease in spring and stream flow. Datelined Austin, it includes a photo of Robert Jackson, a biologist at Duke University, instrumenting tree roots in an Edwards Plateau cave, perhaps Powell's Cave, which is mentioned (as Powell Cave) in the article. It also mentions David Bamberger's juniper-clearing efforts on his land that led to rejuvenation of some springs and ponds. Unfortunately, you have to have a subscription to Science to see the article.
