Hi all!
As many of you are aware, a portion of an upcoming Discovery Channel
program was filmed in Fort Stanton Cave (and Snowy River), with the
assistance of some New Mexico cavers. The series is called "Into the
Unknown with Josh Bernstein" and airs on Monday nights at 8 pm MDT.
The particular program in question focuses on the possibility of life
on Mars and the portion that deals with Fort Stanton Cave deals with
Dr. Penny Boston's work with extremophiles in the cave.
The program is likely to air sometime in October, but the exact air
date is unknown. At any rate, the Discovery Channel does have a
small teaser on their website at this address: http://
dsc.discovery.com/tv/josh-bernstein/episode/mars.html
You should recognize the entrance of Fort Stanton Cave. The cavers
in the picture are (I think) from left to right, Allen Wright, Jim
Cox, Janice Tucker & Mike Bilbo. It is curious that they used this
shot for the promo. It doesn't seem to have anything much to do with
the theme of the program.
One final thing: though the production company spent many hours
filming in the cave, don't expect more than 6 or 8 minutes of the
show to focus on the cave.
Steve Peerman
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things
you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines,
Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in you sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover."
attributed to Mark Twain, but no record exists of his having
written this.
