GREETINGS!

I meant to post this in July and again in August but didn't get around to it.
The Houston Chronicle had two most interesting articles on caves in the travel
section in recent months. Some of you may have seen them in this or your local
paper. Both have great color pictures. The first is of Dean's Blue Hole on
Andros Island in The Bahamas and is spectacular. The article is confined to
page J-7 of the 7-13-08 edition. The second is on Carlsbad Caverns and is in
the August 24, 2008 Sunday edition on the first page of section J and continues
on page 4. Page 2 also features the 10 favorite outdoor destinations in Texas.
I'm not very good at it but most of you can access these articles on
chron.com/travel and it will make you want to be there.

The CaCa link is especially good and sums up why CaCa Np is still my favorite

Thanks Fritz, and to Mark Alman for the links. Interesting stories, but
as usual, the reporter doesn't do a very good job of fact checking. She claims
Carlsbad's Big Room is the second largest in the world. Bob Gulden lists it as
no. 20 <http://www.caverbob.com/room.htm>, and Fabien Darne has it at no. 23
<http://fabien.darne.free.fr/speleo/grandes_salles/>. Several rooms in Mexico
and Belize are larger.

Nominations for TSA Officers for 2009 are now open. Please send me name of
those you would like to nominate, and I will contact and see if they are
willing to run. Nominations will be open until September 22, which is a
month. Ballots then can be prepared.

In the interest of making the vice president's job of organizing the Spring
TSA Convention easier, it was decided at the last TSA Meeting to have
elections earlier in the fall so that the new or continuing TSA Vice Chair
could organize the Spring Convention in a more timely way, since
reservations are required very early at many facilities.

Please send in those nominations as soon as possible.

I will answer individuals who send in nominations and indicate whether or
not the person accepted. I will periodically send out an updated slate to
this list.

Thanks,

Linda Palit

Very nice pictures, Joe, especially of Hamilton Pool.

That is one of my favorite swimmin' holes in the state!

Dead Man's Hole in the same general area (9000 McGregor Lane) is almost
identical but not as accessible and borders Lance Armstrong's property. In
about 1978 when the Hurlbut brothers were subdividing their ranch, I could have
purchased 57 acres opposite what is now the Armstrong property, including half
of the hole and its creek all the way to the Pedernales River for the asking
price of $3,000. per acre. Now a 5 acre lot at the above address was for sale
at $295,000. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.
One of my several regrets.
Fritz

An interesting article on what the Park Service is trying to do to repair the
vandalism to and deterioration of some of the Service's oldest sites. These
include contemporary graffiti in shelter caves and other habitation sites.

ah what a dilemna graffiti is and arent we grateful that historic and prehistoric graffiti (cave art, inscriptions over 50 years old) werent 'repaired' contemporaneously. and would it be vandalism to clean up ancient graffiti?

Cavers,

Don't forget that this weekend is the first fall Project weekend at
Colorado Bend State Park. We will be camping at the new Caver Camp just
inside the Park gate. We are aware of Hurricane Ike barreling its way
in that direction, but we are going ahead with the event anyhow. We
will likely have the Conference Center at Gorman Falls available for
Saturday night in case of emergency, but not Friday. There are already
scheduled survey trips to Gorman Creek Crevice Cave and the Lost Petzl
Cave System, as well as some surface work. If anyone else wants to lead
a specific trip out there this weekend, let me know and I will find you
some participants. Contact me off list if you have questions or need
more information.

If it rains much we will avoid Gorman Creek Crevice and instead go back into
Lemons Ranch and try to finish that survey.
