There is a huge new store in Texas. It is the new Bass Pro Shops in Pearland, just south of Houston.
They had a gigantic party yesterday, complete with food, live entertainment, autographing, hot-air balloon etc. The store is nearly identical to their huge store in Clarksville Indiana. Unfortunately, they mostly just sell fishing and hunting goods. They did have the Orion "Pro" LED headlamp that I haven't seen in Houston yet. They are $ 25 each. I plan to duct tape or velcro 2 of them to my helmet. The artificial cave is really just a talus rock shelter and barely that, however, it does have a scenic waterfall. I don't see how their business plan model works. They have a huge amount of overhead and they stock a lot of crappy stuff. I can't imagine how their other store in Houston is going to stay in business. Also, there are other sporting good stores like Academy just down the street. And 3 Gander Mountains are less than an hour away. I think they chose the best location though. But I didn't see any Petzl vertical gear. Their other store occasionally had a rack and a few biners. What Houston really needs, is a store that stocks real mountain-climbing and rock-climbing and caving equipment. Brands like Moss Tents, and Marmot clothing, and the full Petzl line, and everything that Bob & Bob carries ( well not the bumper-stickers and patches ) and the full Patagonia winter catalog. And with triple X sizes for all those fat Houstonians.
