Many years ago three of us were returning from the NSS convention in NM. Pete Shifflett knew of a place on Interstate 8 towards San Diego that was of interest. We pulled off to a wide area by the road to see a long bridge over a deep canyon--unnoticeable from the road. A steep scamper down takes you the the underneath of the bridge, which is made of a support structure that is basically a rectangular concrete tunnel, perhaps 8 by 12 feet almost a mile long and supported by tall columns. Near where the top slope meets the bottom of the tunnel, there is a large metal cover that has been pried open and one can go inside, into a dark interior. It curves so one can't see too far ahead, and there are cliff swallow birds' nests on the floor. About a third of the way to the middle is an expansion joint on both sides, barely body wide, and two very hefty rods placed into the concrete so the bridge can expand. One can look down perhaps 150 feet to a dry creek bed. Later, several of us did a rappel, tying off to the top-most rod. One has to slowly squeeze through the opening, and when you clear the bottom, you are out in vast open space! Great place but the Highway Patrol will ticket cars parked there--we lucked out.
