Interesting that you send this, Ediger, as I'm just going over this with my
7th graders (and 6th) at the start of the school year. Of course, I have
them list the units and conversions of the standard English system just to
point out how much more complicated it is than the metric, which is what we
spend the rest of the week on, but, hey!

It is worth noting that UK MPG are always more than US MPG as a UK
gallon is 20% more than the US gallon
When I was in the 7th grade and studying volumes, my math teacher quoted
this poem as an aid to mastering the mystery of pints, quarts, and
gallons:
A pint, a pound,
The world around,
They both have 16 ounces.
That was no more true then that it is now. The difference, of course, is
that the British pint can hold 20 ounces--British ounces and US ounces
being the same (which is inexplicable only because of its uniqueness). So
the breakdown is this:
US GB
pint 16 20 (2 each per quart)
quart 32 40 (4 each per gallon)
gallon 128 160
British beer is good, and sold by the pint--also good.
Whether you fill up or drink up--that extra 4 ounces goes farther.
