Evolution in the conventional biological sense is only the modification of
existing life. There are those such as Dawkins who take a very narrow view and
insist that it is a gene eat gene world, and that evolution does not take
place at any other level of organization. Others would argue that evolution,
or
something very much like it, takes place at many levels. I would go a step
farther and posit that evolution, even at a cosmic scale, is inevitable due to
the inherent instability of matter. As long as radiation rules and electrons
are free to move around there will be recombinations of elementary particles,
and that is the fundamental reason for the mutations that drive evolutionary
change. Either that or Allah’s got a sense of humor!
