Body Found In Cave Identified

POSTED: 10:06 pm CDT April 30, 2007
UPDATED: 12:54 pm CDT May 1, 2007
BOERNE, Texas -- Authorities on Tuesday identified a 45-year-old man who
apparently drowned in a cave outside of Boerne.

The victim was Thomas Summers III, who was the manager of Cave Without A
Name, a tourist attraction.

Mike Burrell, a cave caretaker, said that Summers and an employee went
into a nearby cave known as Dead Man's Cave on Monday afternoon to find
out if something in that cave was blocking water from flowing into Cave
Without A Name.

Burrell said that Summers swam into a narrow portion of the cave that
had little breathing room.

The employee heard Summers struggling and never saw him resurface, so
the employee went to get help.

"So, I guess he got turned around and tried to swim back out and was
going the wrong direction," Burrell said. "That's what my speculation
is."

Several hours later, rescue crews found Summers body.

Sheriff's officials said that they believe the incident was an accident.

Summers had a wife and four children.
