Hello,
According to reports by Eric Sanson and the
Speleo Secours Français, the caver had finished
rigging a rebelay at the -110m-level of the
337m-deep pit in Gouffre Pot 2 in the Vercors
region of France. He then lowered another 200
meters of 8mm rope out of his pack and started
the rappel. After about 20 m, he lost control of
his speed of descent, almost free-falling, and
hit a wall. He stopped at a place where the rope
was tangled up, at around -270m. His descender
stopped against the knot, and twisted under the
shock, but did not break.
There was no name given in the articles, but the
French caver associated with the Chiapas
expeditions that Antonio is referring to below
(EKSA or Exploration Karstique Sud Américaine) is
Gerard Ayad, a very experienced caver used to
deep pits and expedition caving. I have no
confirmation of this, though.
Terrible news, and my condolences to his friends and family,
Yvonne Droms

Gerard A. (with two cavers) was rigging a 300mts
deep pit with 200mts and 8mm diameter rope. He
began to rapell and in some moment lost the
control and fell 150mts. His friends look for
help. Later the rescueteam found Gerard died.
Until now, nobody knows why Gerard lost the control. More news later.
Gerard was exploring in Chiapas Mex. in 2003 y
2005 in Chorro Grande (Meseta de Belén), San
Fernando y Cañón de Santo Domingo.
