The Lost Oasis Cave Preserve in South Austin is having a cleanup day Saturday, April 4th from 9 am until about 2 pm, or until everyone gets tired.
All in all, we could probably use 20-30 people, considering the multiple chores we're hoping to take care of. There are three or four dead trees that need to be cut, and a lot of new-growth juniper that should be thinned. We would like to have at least two people bring and operate chainsaws. We need another 6-8 people to be saw attendants and draggers. Gill Ediger is bringing the big chipper so that we can feed these and several piles of old cut brush into it and make mulch. Feel free to bring bags, buckets, or tubs to take some mulch home for your yards. We'll have plenty. We also need to start doing more active need to do fire ant control, so we would like several people to bring big pots and boilers (and 3-4 five-gallon jugs of water each) so we can pour boiling water on the mounds. There is a lot of this to do -- probably 50-100 mounds, so we'd like four or more boilers and people unafraid to haul pots. Once we know how many boilers we can have on site, we will coordinate picking up propane tanks for same. And if you don't want to drag brush or carry buckets of boiling water, we have another chore for you. We will start thinning the profusion of prickly pear around the cave, so bring bow rakes (garden rakes), pitchforks, clam rakes, and other similar tools to help with that project. Everyone should bring gloves and dress appropriately. TCMA will provide coolers with beverages. After the work is finished, Preserve Manager Chris Vreeland will be happy to open the cave for anyone who wants to see it. A helmet and headlamp are required, but you don't need much else. Contact Chris offlist at cvreel...@austin.rr.com to sign up, volunteer for a particular task, or to get directions. _______________________________________________ Texascavers mailing list | http://texascavers.com Texascavers@texascavers.com | Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/texascavers@texascavers.com/ http://lists.texascavers.com/listinfo/texascavers
