Dear Friends,

One of the things I love about studying caves is the diversity of research and
exploration possibilities. This is wonderfully demonstrated by the following
two conference announcements.

The first International Congress of Speleology in Artificial Cavities, HYPOGEA
2015 (I) <http://hypogea2017.com/index.php/information/about-hypogea-2015/> was
held in Rome, Italy earlier this year. Following its success, HYPOGEA 2017 (II)
will be held in the magnificent setting of Cappadocia, Turkey on 6-10 March
2017. While artificial cavities may not seem relevant to cave and karst
researchers, their study has many valuable parallels as shown in the main
themes of the meeting:

*        Exploration

*        Cultural and economic importance

*        Hazards, remediation, and rehabilitation

* Survey, mapping, and dating techniques
This congress is a function of the Artificial Cavities Commission of the
International Union of Speleology.

The 2nd International Planetary Caves Conference will be held on 20-23 October
2015 at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. Since the 1960s,
researchers have speculated about the presence of caves on the Moon and Mars.
To date, planetary scientists have identified more than 200 lunar and over
2,000 Martian cave-like features. This meeting will focus on their origin,
means of exploration, and implications, and will consider the potential
occurrence of caves in other planetary bodies in our solar system.

Abstract Deadline - Thursday, 6 August 2015, 5:00 p.m. U.S. Central Daylight
Time (CDT -5).
