Folks, Throughout this winter and spring, the NSS will be searching for qualified and talented candidates for the Spring 2018 Election of Directors of the National Speleological Society. Because the search for these individuals is nationwide, we need the help of the entire NSS membership! What can you do to help?
1. Consider serving the Society and your fellow members by running for a seat on the Board of Governors. 2. Recommend qualified cavers as potential Director candidates from your Grottos, Regions, Surveys, and Sections. 3. Take time to read the candidate platforms and vote in the Director election each and every year. If you're considering running for an NSS Director position and need more information, please contact the Nominating Committee Chairman. The deadline for submission of your candidacy is April 10, 2018. Please be sure to keep your membership information updated with the NSS Office to ensure that you will receive voting information-either by regular mail or e-mail. You can visit the NSS web page at www.caves.org<http://www.caves.org> for information on how to serve. If you are interested in running for the position of Director of the NSS, the NSS webpage has all the information and instructions you will need. Expectations of Directors: * Attend three meetings of the Board of Governors per year * Spring, summer (Convention), & fall * Send proxy if unable to attend * Provide the NSS with leadership, advice, and promotion * Establish NSS goals, strategies, policies, and direction * Elect NSS officers and Chairman of the Directorate * Participate on NSS committees * Conduct fund raising and outreach * Become familiar with NSS finances Directorate (Directors) The Directorate is made up of twelve directors elected by the members of the Society. To be eligible, the person must be a regular or higher member of the Society. Each director serves a three-year term and the terms are staggered so that four directors are elected each year. Directors are expected to attend each meeting of the Board of Governors or the Directorate, (usually three a year, one of which is always the Monday and Friday of the NSS Convention.) The other dates and locations vary depending upon the hosting IO. Travel expenses are the responsibility of each Director. If they cannot attend, they may appoint another member of the Society as their proxy. Annually, the directors elect one of their number to serve as Chairman of the Directorate. This chairman presides when the Directorate meets alone. They also elect a chairman of the Executive Search Committee. It is the responsibility of the Executive Search Committee to maintain a list of people qualified and willing to become officers of the Society. The prime responsibility of the directors is the election of the officers of the Society and, with the officers as a Board of Governors, setting policies for conducting the official business of the Society and reviewing and enacting the financial budget. They also serve on committees and review the activities of all the committees. All Society policies are established by the Board of Governors. Please feel free to forward this email to list serves or individuals. Thanks, Geary M. Schindel, President, National Speleological Society
