And now, 25 years later, you will be in a Huautla cave again when Pierre-Yves is in San Antonio, TX.

Folks,

I'm pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Pierre-Yves Jeannin with the Swiss Institute for Speleology and Karst Studies will be the next Edwards Aquifer Authority Distinguished Lecturer on April 13, 2018.

Dr. Jeannin will be speaking on the following topics of Groundwater Management.

 1. Karst in Mountainous Regions

Most caves in Switzerland have deep shafts and meanders. Many of them were/are influenced by glaciers. What is the difference with deep caves in Mexico? The talk will give an overview of various types of karst regions with some morphological and hydrological perspectives.

 1. Karst hydrology and karst hydrogeology

Karst hydrology is mainly focused on time variations, and karst hydrogeology on spatial variations. For many applied questions it is more important to know where "things happens" rather than when! An outline of the way to study karst according to various applied questions will be presented.

 1. Modelling flow and particle transport in karst
Flow and transport simulation in karst is still highly challenging. "How can the hydraulic conductivity in a karst aquifer be determined?", "Whit is the effect of partially filled caves (epiphreatic zone)?", "Is turbidity of a spring produced by particles remobilized from sediments within the aquifer or by particles coming from the surface?"

 1. The breathing of karst

Karst is traversed by strong fluxes of water and air. These fluxes have many implications for the whole thermics of karst massifs. They also play a role on the weathering of cave walls. Data from various places, including Lascaux cave painted 18'000 years ago will be discussed.

Registration is now open at http://pierre-yvesjeannin2018.eventzilla.net<http://pierre-yvesjeannin2018.eventzilla.net/>

Note the cost for registration is $24. A flyer announcing the event will be sent out next week.

Thank you,

Geary
