Bill,

Most of the materials on the Karst Information Portal are scanned by others and
sent in. I don’t recall if the Texas Caver was scanned by the folks at the
University of South Florida (USF) or if we used the scans that I think Bill
Mixon made. When we first started the Portal, USF was scanning a lot of
material and then cutbacks during the recession cut out that work. When USF was
doing it, they used state-of-art library scanning and OCRing standards,
hardware, and software. Of course, the state-of-the-art has progressed over the
past ten years and if they restore funding to resume scanning, they plan to
follow whatever the current state-of-art will be at that time.

Thanks,

George

George,

It helps to have higher-res scans of a journal in order to do OCR (optical
character recognition) and a searchable pdf. I've found that 400 dpi works
well, but sometimes tiny fonts (8 pt or less) require even more resolution.
Many old scanned issues of The Texas Caver are blurry anyway, so sometimes even
high res and good search software cannot read every word. DocFetcher sometimes
misses some search words because of that, but I have found it to be very good.
OCR keeps improving, so maybe KIP can tap into a new one.

Justin,

I apologize for the failure of the Karst Information Portal to find all the
information on the various Dead Dog Caves. Over a year ago, I also noticed in
my searches that it was not discovering reports I know were on the Portal. I
pulled together a team of young and old reviewers from various countries to
carefully and critically review the Portal. The incomplete and failed searches
were definitely part of their feedback, which now sits with our partners at the
University of South Florida. They are planning a major software upgrade for the
Portal—which was delayed by COVID and we hope it will now start before the end
of the year. In my view, this searching problem is the #1 thing that needs to
be fixed.

I’ll forward your comment below as reinforcement of the problem. While no one
enjoys hearing complaints, I appreciate them to know about problems that need
to be corrected. If anyone else on this list has experienced other problems
with the Karst Information Portal, please contact me at my e-mail address
below. As we prepare to overhaul the Portal, this is the time when additional
comments will be most useful so we will know to keep good features and repair
or improve others.

When the upgraded version of the Portal is posted, I’ll announce it through the
NCKRI news messages which are posted to this list.

Thanks,

George

Thank you so much for running that query and posting the results so quickly. I
was able to find all those issues on the Karst Information Portal.
Disappointingly, I had previously used the search feature on the KIP site and
only located 4 issues. I repeated the query yesterday with the same results.
🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ You will be included in the acknowledgments.

Hi Justin and all,

I just made a search of all Texas Caver issues, digital format, and found these
hits, below. I edited and pasted the first one from 1963, which refers to the
gating of Dead Dog Cave. I thought I would post these results with delay, and
perhaps others can go through these issues for more details.

By the way, I use the free Windows program, DocFetcher, which can quickly
search large collections of files that one has previously processed and indexed
in the program. I can also search most of the AMCS pubs, NSS News, some of the
JCKMS indices, and Mundos Subterraneos for any word or phrase.

If you need more help, please let me know.

Thanks, good luck with conservation efforts,

The Texas Caver, November 1963, 8(11):111.

''What a wonderful convention!"
was the consensus on the Seventh Annual
Region Convention held at Southwestern
University in Georgetown, November
2-3. It combined the best of business meet-
ings, convention papers, and field
trips. Fifty-seven registered for the
two-day session, the greatest number we
have had at a convention since 1957. We
hope this will be the beginning of an
upward trend.
The 7:00 AM Board of Governors
meeting saw representatives from Abil-
ene Grotto, Dallas-Fort Worth Grotto,
UT Grotto, Southwestern Speleological
Society, Balcones Grotto, and San Ang-
elo College Caving Club. The
Conservation Committee reported on details of
the gating of Dead Dog Cave in Austin.
The suggestion was offered that each
grotto submit one article on conserva-
tion with black and white pictures to
be offered to county newspapers in the
caving areas. Each article could be
sent at monthly intervals to each paper.
The conservation committee is compiling
a list of landowners who are not will-
ing to admit cavers, to keep those who
may hear of leads on these properties
from making a long drive for nothing.
Representatives were asked to remind
their grottoes that it is important to
honor the promises of maps and pictures
made to ranchers. They are understand-
ingly irritated when these products do
not arrive…

Terry, those pics are of tremendous historical value. Thank you for posting

I am working to quickly pull together a report including as much information as
possible about the Dead Dog Caves. I would like to include those pics in the
report, with appropriate credit.

Also, the picture of the beautiful natural entrance seems a much better match
to the TSS records descriptions of the entrance to Dead Dog Cave No. 1, and not
so much matching descriptions of Dead Dog Cave No. 2. How does that jive with
your memory?

Thanks,

Dead Dog #2 was the biggest/deepest of the caves on this property as I remember.

Development is being proposed at the site of the now closed Luby's Restaurant

caves will be filled in during construction. The City Zoning and Planning
Commission is having a meeting on Tuesday August 17th and this development is
on the agenda. Citizens can apply to speak at this meeting via phone so anyone
with extensive knowledge of these caves should consider making some remarks.
Anyone can watch the meeting remotely.
