It can color code (see the mathemagix and the scheme plugins). Markup? sane macros? ¿?
Either way, I think TeXmacs is highly customizable. The mathemagix plugin, I think, is the best comparison; not the Python plugin at this moment. Perhaps a video of the Mathemagix plugin would be good for this. -Adrián.
