I don't know. But it seems to be a bug of the latex converter. I note to
check this.
I can reproduce this without reduce, in a pnambic session. In its input
window I type
[02]latex:$\displaystyle \mathrm{a2b}$[05]
and get
a*2*b
(in roman font) in TeXmacs.
