plist files can have non-printing characters in them, and sometimes the 
textmate plist file does too.  Unfortunately the expat parser does not tolerate 
these non-printing characters.  Since the latex preferences "should never have" 
any of these non-printing characters in them, then it shouldn't hurt the latex 
bundle to strip them out of any parts of the file it doesn't care about before 
calling on expat to parse the plist.
