Date: Mon, 17 Aug 2009 06:27:40 -0700 Some facts about swine flu from leading Epidemiologists. 1. Swine flu, i.e. H1N1 virus is not new. It was first detected in 1987. 2. Infective stage of flu is 5 days, 1 day before and 4 days after onset of symptoms. 3. To stop the spread of infection, patients having symptoms of flu like fever, cough and running nose MUST take rest at home for 4 days to avoid transmission to others. 4. Masks are of limited value as the infection can also spread through droplets on your skin, physical contact etc. Wear a mask if you must as a fashion statement, but it would be better to avoid crowded places like Malls and Cinema Halls where air conditioners are on because you get recirculated air, where the virus density multiplies. 5. Death after H1N1 flu is not common; in fact infections like measles take a toll of thousands more every year. 6. Fever accompanied by respiratory distress, should be immediately notified which is likely to be a complication of H1N1 flu. 7. The mortality rate is less than 0.01 percent of those affected. That means the fatality rate is one in ten thousand affected persons. 8. Two years ago SARS was blown out of proportion; what happened thereafter? Humans developed immunity to the virus. The same will happen in case of H1N1 virus. So, do not panic. 9. We need to take care of children and elderly who have less immunity. They must avoid crowded places. 10. Finally, do not be afraid..
