17 (2). DIAMONDS OF VALAN. The merchant sat on the ground and spread a black cloth in front of him. He set an exquisite red diamond in the center and set the other gems around it. Those diamonds looked very different and were vary rare. The ministers exclaimed to this effect.
The merchant told them,”You are right! These are not just the usual gem stones. These are the body parts of a great Siva bhakthan named Valan.” Then he told them the story of Valan. Valan was an asuran but a great devotee of Lord Siva. He begged his Lord for an unusual boon, “I should not not die in any battle or war. When I die all my body parts must get transformed to beautiful gem stones which will please the eyes of the beholders!” Lord Siva granted him the boon and Valan became very happy. Some time later a battle broke out between Indra and Valan. Valan defeated Indra very easily. Indra thought of a new plan to get rid of Valan once for all! He told Valan, “I am very much impressed by your valor and strength. I want to present you with a rare boon! What do you want?” Valan had a hearty laugh and replied, “I have been blessed by Lord Siva himself. So I do not need any more boon. You tell me what you want and you will have it.” This was what Indra had in his mind all along! He told Valan, “I want to perform rare yaga to please the Gods. I need an animal to be sacrificed in the yaaga. Can you become one?” “The yaaga pasu will be sacrificed and all the Devas would eat it. It will fetch me honor and the blessings of the Gods. Surely I will oblige your request!” Valan crowned his son as the new king of his country. He transformed himself to a yaaga pasu. It was perfect in every aspect.
