*மூலம் என்று அழைத்தேனோ கஜராஜனைப் போலே* கஜேந்திர மோட்சம் பாகவத புராணத்தின் எட்டாவது நூலில் பகவான்விஷ்ணு, முதலைப் பிடியில் சிக்கிய கஜேந்திரன் எனும் யானையின் அபயக் குரலைக் கேட்டவுடன் நேரில் தோன்றி யானைக்கு மோட்சம் அளித்ததை விளக்குகிறது. இக் கதையை வியாசரின் மகனான சுகப் பிரம்மம், மன்னர் பரிக்க்ஷித்துவிற்கு கூறியதாக அமைகிறது. கஜேந்திர மோட்ச வரலாறானது வைணவ சமயத்தின் சரணாகதி தத்துவத்திற்கு உதாரணமாக உள்ளது. இங்கு கஜேந்திரன் மனிதனையும், முதலை அவன் பாவங்களும், சேற்றுக்குளமாக சம்சாரமும், என்றும் போல் ஆபத்தில் இருந்து காக்கும் கடவுளாக ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனையும் குறிக்கிறது! முதலையின் பிடியில் இருந்த கஜேந்திரன், விஷ்ணுவை நோக்கித் துதித்த பாடல், கஜேந்திர ஸ்துதியாக போற்றப்படுகிறது. இது விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமத்தில் முதல் சுலோகம் ஆகும். தேவேந்திரனுக்கு உரிய திரிகூட மலையில் கஜேந்திரன் என்னும் பெயர் கொண்ட யானை, யானை கூட்டத்தின் தலைவனாக வாழ்ந்து வந்தது. ஒரு நாள், தாகம் தணிக்க தனது யானை கூட்டத்துடன் நீர் நிலையை நோக்கிச் சென்றது. குட்டி யானைகள் விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருக்க, கஜேந்திரன் நீருக்குள் இறங்க முற்பட்ட பொழுது, அந்தக் குளத்தில் வாழும் ஒரு முதலை கஜேந்திரனின் கால்களைப் பற்றியது. முதலையின் வாயில் அகப்பட்ட கால்களுடன் உயிருக்குப் போராடிய கஜேந்திரனை மற்ற யானைகள் காப்பாற்ற முயன்று தோல்வியுற்றன. தம் வலிமையெல்லாம் திரட்டி அவை கஜேந்திரனை மீட்க முயற்சித்தும் பலனளிக்கவில்லை. பின்னர் கஜேந்திரனின் காலம் நெருங்கி விட்டது, இனி உயிர் பிழைக்க வழியில்லை என்று உணர்ந்து, அவை ஒவ்வொன்றாக விலகிச் சென்றன. நாட்கள் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தன, ஆயினும், முதலையின் பிடி விட்டபாடில்லை! இரண்டும் சக்தியை இழந்து ஓய்ந்தன. தனது இறுதி காலம் நெருங்குவதை உணர்ந்த யானை, ஒரு தாமரை மலரைத் தனது தும்பிக்கையால் பற்றி வான் நோக்கி “*ஆதிமூலமே**”* என பெருமாளை நோக்கிச் சரணாகதி செய்தது. தனது பக்தனின் துயர் துடைக்க விரைந்து வந்த பெருமாள் தனது சக்ராயுதத்தால் முதலையின் தலையை துண்டித்து யானையை விடுவித்து மோட்சம் அளித்தார். கஜேந்திரன் தனது முற்பிறவில் இந்திர துய்மன் என்னும் மன்னன் . இவர் ஒரு சிறந்த விஷ்ணு பக்தனாக விளங்கினார். ஆனால் அகந்தை இவர் கண்களை மறைக்க, அகஸ்திய முனிவரின் சாபத்தால் யானையாக பிறப்பெடுத்து, பின் இறைவனிடம் சரணாகதி அடைந்து, அகந்தை ஆணவம் அழிக்கப்பட்டு, மோட்சம் கிடைக்கப்பெற்றார். ஒரு முறை முனிவர் தேவலாவுடன் கந்தர்வ மன்னனும் சேர்ந்து நீராடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் பொழுது, முனிவர் சூரிய நமஸ்காரம் செய்கையில் விளையாட்டாக கந்தர்வ மன்னன், அவரது கால்களை இழுத்தார். இதில் கோபமடைந்த முனிவர், முதலையாக பிறப்பாய் எனச் சாபமிட்டார்.தன் தவறை உணர்ந்த கந்தர்வன் சாப விமோசனம் வேண்டினான். பிறவியின் முடிவில் கஜேந்திரன் கால்களைப் பிடிக்க, விஷ்ணுவால் சாப விமோசனம் பெறுவாய் எனக் கூறினார். அதன்படி கந்தர்வனும் அரசனும் முறையே முதலையாகவும்,யானையாகவும் பிறவியெடுத்து தங்களது சாப விமோசனத்தை பெற்றனர். திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “கஜேந்திரன் போல், ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனே அனைத்திற்கும் ஆதிமூலம் என்பதை உணர்ந்து, அவரை அழைத்து, அவரின் கருணையில் திளைத்தேனோ?”, என்று வினவுகிறார். *========********========**********========**********========* *********========********** * *mUlam enRu azhaiththEnO gajarAjanaip pOlE* Popularly known as “Gajendra Moksha”, the story of Gajendra the elephant is written in the eighth skandam of Bhagavata Puranam. It is one of the famous exploits of the god Vishnu. The tale of Gajendra is an integral theme in Vaishnavism and has great symbolic value: Gajendra is the man, the crocodile is sin, and the muddy water of the lake is Saṃsāra. This story was narrated by Sri Suka to Emperor Parikshit at Parikshit's request. There was once an elephant named Gajendra who lived in a garden calledṚtumat which was created by Varuna. This garden was located on Mount Trikuta, meaning, the "Three-Peaked Mountain”. Gajendra ruled over all the other elephants in the herd. On a hot day, he proceeded with his herd to a pond. Suddenly, a crocodile living in the pond attacked Gajendra and caught him by the leg. Gajendra tried for a long time to escape from the crocodile's clutches. All his family members and relatives gathered around to help him but in vain. The crocodile simply would not let go. When they realised that ‘death’ had come close to Gajendra and there’s no hope he could be saved, they left him alone. He trumpeted in pain and helplessness until he was hoarse. As the struggle was seemingly endless, and when he had spent his last drop of energy, Gajendra called Lord Vishnu to save him, holding a lotus up above in the air as an offering. Hearing his devotee's call and prayer, Vishnu rushed to the scene. As Gajendra sighted the god coming, happily he lifted the lotus flower with his trunk towards the Lord. Seeing this, Vishnu was pleased and with his Sudharshana Chakra, he decapitated the crocodile. Gajendra prostrated himself before the god. Vishnu informed Gajendra that he, in one of his previous births, had been the celebrated King Indradyumna, a devotee of Vishnu, but due to his disrespect to the great Sage Agastya, he had been cursed to be born as an elephant. Because Indradyumna had been devoted to Vishnu, the god had him born as Gajendra and made him realize that there is something called Kaivalya which is beyond Svarga and Urdhva Loka, the realm of the gods. Indradyumna could attain Moksha finally when he (as Gajendra) left all his pride and doubt and totally surrendered himself to Vishnu. The crocodile in its previous birth had been a Gandharva king called Huhu. Sage Devala came to visit the king, and when the two of them were bathing and Devala was offering prayers to the Sun god, the king pulled the sage's leg for fun. The sage was furious and cursed the king to become a crocodile in his next life. The repentant king begged the sage's pardon. Devala explained that he could not reverse the curse; he blessed Huhu that Vishnu would slay the crocodile and liberate him from the cycle of birth and death.
