Q1         Is it scientifically proven, that eating only two full mealsa day
causes intermittent fasting and hence increases insulin sensitivity?

A1          Tom Coffey November 12,2018-Online Personal Fitness Trainer-Good
question.

First, let us clear the deck about what intermittent fasting (IF)actually is.

Eating two full meals a day won’t “cause” intermittent fasting. Fasting is
simply a planned periodof time that you go without eating. It’s within your
control, andhas been part of human culture since the dawn of mankind.

Eating two full meals a day will break your fast (and thus kick you outof a
fasting state), but can be a sound strategy to use in combination withfasting.

I’ll explain this more in a second, and then touch on the second part ofyour
question about insulin sensitivity.

A diet multiplier-I like tothink of IF as a “diet multiplier”.

Basically, what this means is that you can use it maximize the effects ofany
diet—regarding of the foods you’re eating. See, fasting is about subtraction,
not addition. Wheremost diets say “eat more of this, and less of this”, fasting
simply says“reduce the amount of time you spend eating”.

Insulin sensitivity

Speaking of not eating this seems like a good time to transition to thesecond
part of your question—insulin sensitivity.

First, let us quickly look at how the body stores energy, and then we’lltake a
peek at how fasting helps improve insulin sensitivity.

What happens when we eat

In the simplest sense food is merely fuel for the body. That’s it. Withthis
basic framework in mind eating really only serves two physiologicpurposes:

Supply the body will immediate,short-term energy

Supply the body with excessenergy that it can store for later use

How does the body store energy?

Insulin, my friend. Insulin. This is the main player involved in makingfood
readily available to be used, or storing it away as body fat.

When you eat carbohydrates theyquickly get broken down into simple sugar
molecule called glucose. This causesa rise in blood sugar levels.

The hormone insulin allows glucose to move directly into most cells inthe body,
to be used for immediate energy.

But lets say that you’ve eaten enough and your body doesn’t need any moreenergy
right now (glucose), but yet you continue to eat. What happens to the
extraglucose molecules that are being created?

Glucose molecules can be linked together into long chains called Glycogen.
These longchains get stored in the liver for future use. However, the liver can
only store about 24–36 hours worthof glycogen. Once it reaches capacity,
insulin the bodybegins to convert any remaining glucose into fat. This process
is knownas “de novo lipogenesis” or, making new fat.

While the liver has limited storage capacity, our bodies do not. Forbetter, or
for worse, humans can store body fat in unlimitedquantities.

When you eat food →your blood sugar levels increase→this triggers anincrease in
insulin → insulin helps breakdown food for immediate energy →insulin helps
store excess energy for later use (either as glycogen or bodyfat)

A fun analogy to help add clarity

Ok, to help put this into context we can all understand lets assumeyou’re at
Disney World (or any other large amusement park) on a very crowdedday. Probably
a Saturday.

And, since you’re at the amusement park you’re really excited to ride
thebiggest roller coaster they have.

Think of glucose as using a fast-pass at Disney World to skip right tothe front
of the line. Itprovides immediate access to the roller coaster, but is limited
to a very smallnumber of people.

Once the roller coaster is filled with the people using the fast pass, everyone
else has to wait outside in a long line. Think of glycogen as waiting in a long
line toride the roller coaster. You’ll still be able to ride, but it will just
takelonger to get there.

For this example lets pretend that the line for the roller coaster getstoo
long, and the park officials make everyone else wait in the parking lot.Well,
the parking lot at Disney World is gigantic and can hold a huge number
ofpeople. Because theline to the roller coaster is all backed up, continuing to
add more and morepeople to the parking lot is exactly how the body continues to
add more andmore fat when there is too much glucose.

So, to recap our analogy:

Glucose → People using the fast pass at Disney World. Limited to a verysmall
number

Glycogen → The long lines of people outside the roller coaster, waitingto get on

Body fat → More and more people waiting in the parking lot to ride theroller
coaster, because the fast pass and outside lines are full

What happens when you fast?

Well… the opposite of what happens when you eat. Kind of makes sense, right?

Remember, fasting is going for periods of time without eating. Theseperiods of
time are under your control but can last from 12–16 hours up to manydays or
even months.

When you don’t eat (due to fasting), here’s what happens:

Insulin levels drop → alerts the body to start burning its stored energy

First, the body breaks down the stored glycogen, in the liver, toglucose. This
happens first because it’s a more easily accessible fuel source thanaccessing
body fat

However, stored glycogen can only provide energy for 24–36 hours. Afterthat,
these stores are usually depleted

Once the glycogen stores are depleted, the bodystarts converting body fat into
usable energy. Using stored fat for energy isalso known as Ketosis, or “keto”.

When you fast and stopping constantly elevating your insulin levels, you give
your body a chance increase insulin sensitivity.

Insulin sensitivity = how effective your body is at using glucose. When your
insulin sensitivity drops (due toconstant eating) this is when you start to run
into problems such as obesity ortype 2 diabetes.

No food coming in = a drop in insulin = improved insulin sensitivity =your body
becomes more efficient at using glucose again.

An analogy to add clarity

Think of insulin sensitivity as caffeine dependence. If you drink a fullpot of
coffee every single day, over time your body becomes used to thecaffeine. Thus
it requires more and more of it to have the same effect.

When you stop drinking caffeine for a while, your tolerance goes backdown.
After a time of no caffeine drinking 1 or 2 cups will be all you need tojolt
yourself back to life in the morning.

Insulin sensitivity is the same way.

When you stop constantly eating food for a while (sounds like fasting tome) you
give you body a chance to reset you insulin tolerance.

This is obviously an oversimplified example, but I think you see youwhere I’m
going with this.

In plain English now

Ok, I realize that talking Science can make your brain smoke if you’renot down
with that lingo. To make sure I answered appropriately answered yourquestions,
please allowme to recap these answers in plain English:

Yes, the positive effects of intermittent fasting are well documented
byscience. Below is just one of many, many studies you can start to sink
yourteeth into about IF.

Effects of intermittent fastingon health markers in those with type 2 diabetes:
A pilot study

Eating two full meals per daydoesn’t “cause” intermittent fasting. Going
without eating food for a period oftime is how you fast.

Eating food causes your insulin levels to rise. Yes, all foodshave some effect
on insulin. However, fasting does not cause an increasein insulin whatsoever.
So, if you want to improve your insulin sensitivity overtime, utilizing a
fasting protocol is a phenomenal way to do this.

Q2         Can you tell me something inspiring?

A2          Sivani Shiv Updated Sun Studiesat MBBS (2017 - 2022) (Expected 2022)

I am going to write the story ofthis little boy standing with barefoot
here.(picture not added)

His father was a poor farmer who couldn't even afford a pair of sandals, good
clothes. This guywore sandals for the first time during his college days.

He studied in a government school and after returning he used to help hisfather
in farming everyday and even helped in cattle rearing. His brother andsister
couldn't study due to their poor condition.

He wanted to always be an engineer but due to very poor financialcondition he
was a sent for Bsc but later on his father sold a land for his engineering. He
gotBTech in aeronautics degree but he didn't get a job. So he later joined
IIsc. Even then hehelped his father with farming. Theirs was hand to mouth
condition then.

He wanted to join satellite butended up joining PSLV. Now he is CHAIRMAN OF
ISRO.

Something I loved in him is

He never felt shameful to share his troublesome past ( Many forget storyof rags
after gaining wealth only very few share this).

His down to earth nature.

His words from an interview with NDTV

"I wasn't bothered aboutwhat I didn't get. I excelled in whatever I was given
to do"

Q3         In Hindu mythology, why is Ganga said to be the greatest andmost
sacred river of all? Is it because it originated from Lord Vishnu's lotusfeet?

A3          Nagendra Joshi 29-1-2021-TheRiver Ganga is said to be greatest or
auspicious because of itsconnection with the holy Trinity i.e Lord Brahma, Sri
Narayan and Mahadev.

In Hinduism, Ganga is considered the most auspicious river. No it doesn'tmean
that the other rivers are not sacred or holy. In our sanatan dharm, nature too
is worshipped. For example, it is suggested to chant a mantra, glorifying the
Earth goddessand seeking forgiveness from her before putting feet on the
ground. Similarly, while bathing, it issuggested to chant a mantra, summoning
the seven holy rivers i.e Ganga, Yamuna,Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu
and Kaveri.

Coming back to the topic, there are many reasons for Ganga consideredsacred in
Hinduism-

Ganga originated from the lotusfeet of Lord Vishnu

It is said that, during the Vamana Avatar, when Sri Narayan covered Earthand
Heaven in his footsteps, Lord Brahma washed the holy foot of SriNarayan by the
water in his Kamandalu and collected it. Ganga was born fromthat holy water.

Some stories also say that Ganga originated because of a hole in thecovering of
the universe by the left foot of Lord Vishnu during the Vamanaavatar.

Mahadev

You might have heard the famous story of the sixty thousand sons of KingSagar
getting killed by the sight of Sage Kapil and Bhagirath performing
severepenance to bring the celestial river Ganga to the Earth for providing
Moksha tothe deceased.

Since River Ganga's arrivalfrom the heaven to the Earth would be destructive,
Bhagirath worshipped Mahadev as suggested by Lord Brahma.

Goddess Ganga was proud of her flow and went more faster than usualthreatening
the World, butMahadev captured her flow in his matted locks and divided the
flow into sevenstreams.

Since the water came in contactwith the head of Mahadev himself, it became
sacred.

Sri Krishna in Bhagavad Gita saidthat he is Ganges among the rivers

pavanaḥ pavatām asmi rāmaḥ śhastra-bhṛitām aham

jhaṣhāṇāṁ makaraśh chāsmi srotasām asmi jāhnavī

Translation

Amongst purifiers I am the wind, and amongst wielders of weapons I amLord Ram.
Of water creatures I am the crocodile, and of flowingrivers I am the Ganges.

What were the three conditions,

The first is that no onesees them doing this. In such a situation, Rishi
