10Art and Culture 

Palakkad district has a gloriouscultural tradition. It is said that Thunchathu 
Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, thefather of Malayalam literature, spent his last days 
in Chittur. To commemoratethis, there is the  "Thunchathu Acharya Madam"at 
Chittur. 

Kunjan nambiar, the most popularp[oet of Malayalam and the founder of Thullal, 
purely a Kerala art form, hadhis birth in a small village called 
Killikurissimangalam (Lakkidi)  inthis district. Ramapani vada cousin of Kunjan 
Nambiar was a greatman. 

Worthy contributions have been madeby talented artists of this district for 
maintaining and enriching theclassical dance forms of Kerala, such  as Chakkiar 
Koothu, Thullal, Kathakali and Mohiniattom. 

Mani Madhava   Chakiar for 'Koothu' and Vazhenkada KunjuNair for Kathakali are 
the two names to be remembered in this context. The" Kalluvazhichitta" , the  
mostpopular school of 'Kathakali' had its origin in Palakkad district and 
itsexponent was late Sri Vazhenkada Kunju Nair. 

The musical   tradition of Palakkad district isunchallenged. The district has 
been blessed with the birth of the late Sri Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, 
the exponent ofCarnatic music and Sri Palakkad Mani Iyer, the  inimitable 
maestro of mridanga. Sri C. Sankaran Nair also belongsto         Mankara, a 
place in thisdistrict.   

Among the eminent personalities ofthe district are the late K.P.S.Menon, 
diplomat and author who won the Lenin Prize and late K.P.Kesava  Menon, the 
great freedom fighter,celebrated author and journalist.       

Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai spent his lifein exile at   Vadakkanthara 
near Palakkadtown. Some of the old temples in the district have in them 
beautiful paintingsand sculptures of great artistic value. 

SWARALAYA is a registered CulturalOrganization, which has already established 
its name in the cultural horizon ofour country by its constant and tireless 
efforts since its inception in 1997 atPalakkad. The main objectives of this 
prestigious organization, registeredunder  education, cultural and 
charitablesocieties act 21 of 1860 with  registernumber PKD/CA/195/97 dated 
11.06.1997, are promotion, protection andpropagation of all performing arts and 
providing  encouragement to budding young artists towitness the performances of 
maestros in the field of music and dance and toshare the stage with them.

        11 Religion and Customs 

Hinduism is the predominant religionin the district. Nearly 76 percent of the 
population belongs to the Hinducommunity. All the sub castes of Hindu community 
are well represented in thedistrict. 

The Vellodis and   Nedungadis, two sections of the Nair community, peculiar to, 
arerepresented in this district also. Sections of the Hindu        
Vaisya(Business) community, peculiar to this district are Moothan  [Muthuvan - 
believed to be the old name],Guptan, Mannadiar and Tharakan. 

Update-Nedungadis had established Nedungadi bank with many branches including 
inChennai. They had many branches in Chennai. Later it was merged withPanjab 
National Bank. 

Vishnu and Siva are popularlyworshipped. Kshethrams and Ambalams are dedicated 
to these major deities. TheKavus and Kovils are dedicated to deities like 
Ayyappan, Subramonyan,Bhadrakali, Hanuman and even  malignantdemons. 

Snakeworship has been widely prevalent in these part.    The worship of 
ancestors is also practicedby Hindus. Offerings are made to departedsouls on 
moon Sankranthi days. 

11aMezhattor Agnihothri 

MezhatholAgnihothri (born 342 AD[citation needed]) is a figure in the folk 
history of Kerala whois credited with reviving the ancient Shrauta traditions 
in Kerala, India, inaround the 4th century AD. At that time, Buddhism and 
Jainism had eroded theancient Vedic religion and culture of India. Mezhathol 
rejuvenated the ancientcustoms by performing 99 yagas. The Shrauta traditions 
still remain intact inKerala today, maintained by the rigidly orthodox 
Nambudiri Brahmins. 

Thiruvegappurais famous for Vettila jyorisham. A number of persons still 
practice it there. 

The Muslim community is the secondlargest, forming 21.2 percent of the 
population. A particular section of the Muslim community whosemother tongue is 
Tamil, are known as Ravuthars. These people camehere as traders and soldiers. 
They belong to the Hanaf sect of Islam. Mostof   them reside in Alathur, 
Chittur, andPalakkad taluks. The way of life  this particularsection is much 
influenced Ty the Tamil culture,  especially in marriage customs and 
foodhabits.  There is another sect of Muslims known asPattanis. They are also 
called  Decanese. They came from Decan with the Mysore rulers and settled here. 

 Traditionally, they arewell-trained horsemen. Their influence in Palakkad can 
be seen from the fact that a street is named after them as  Pattani Street. 
They also belong to 'Hanafi' sect of Muslims. The rest         of the Muslim 
community is known asMoppilas. 

The numerical strength of theChristian community in the district according to 
1971 census is 45,426. Almostall sections of the Christian community are 
represented. A good number ofChristians have moved to the hilly tracts of the 
district in search of land anda living. The ceremonies connected with, birth, 
marriage and death differ fromone  community to another. Therestrictions based 
on caste and religions are observed generally by allcommunities. 

The forestregion of Palakkad district is notable for its tribal population. 
Irular,Kurumber, Eravalas, Malamalasar, Malasar, Kadar, Malayar, etc are the 
tribalsliving in these forests. Attappady is an important centre of tribal 
people.The beliefs, customs, and ways of life of these tribal people are 
distinct;each class having its own  traditionalcustoms and ways of life. 

Jain Temple of Jainimedu is situated on the western suburbs ofPalakkad  town, 
not far from the railwaystation, this historic 32 feet long, 20  feet wide 
granite temple displays imagesof the Jain Thirthankaras and   Yakshinis. 




The region around the temple, known as Jainimedu, is one of    the few laces in 
Kerala where the vestigesof Jainism have survived. It  is at a Jain house here 
that poet Kumaranasanwrote his monumental poet   Veenapoovu(The fallen flower). 

Palakkadwas once home to a community of     400 Jain families, but their 
numbers are lessnow.
