MONKEY(KURANGU)

Dear friends,

I am astonished very much about thebehaviour and living pattern of monkeys
during recent thinking. Though thereare trees and fruits in many places, this
vegetarian animal always concentratesto certain areas.

In the hill track to Kalpetta(Vayanad), we could see plenty of monkeys in the
MIDDLE AREA of the hill section.Near my home at VENMANI I could see a lot of
monkeys. Similarly at SASTHAMKOTTA(near Quilon to say). In Mudumalai sanctuary
I could see the special type ofmonkeys called SIMHAVALAN KURUANGU along the
border of the forest.

Another thing I observed about themonkeys is their daily living pattern. If we
go through the hill section  to Kalpetta, we could see them along the roadsonly
after about 11 AM and till about 5 PM. Afterwards or before that if wetake
plantains we used to keep it in the roadside. Though other animals likecow,
wake up in the night and if hungry produce sound like “MAEEEE”, no suchnature
is seen with the monkeys.

Probably similar to dogs they couldremain hungry. Probably having no useful
purpose served, other than for skillgames, monkey domestication is less.
However when domesticated they remainhelpful and obedient to the owner. Let me
go continue with monkeys.

Reposted on 8-2-2021 after editing and updating. What prompted me torepost this
article is yesterday’s QA mentioning about Vanara, differentiating frommonkeys.
Hanuman was a vanara. A human with animal qualities. R. Gopala Krishnan.

1.Vanara

Vanara is told as a from humanswith animal qualities.  They could talk.Probably
the species have extinct now. Though we generally call Hanuman asmonkey god. He
is a Vanara. Hanuman is a CHIRANJEEVI.  Hanuman has ASHTA SIDDIES.
Specialcapabilities.  On account of that only hecould fly to Srilanka, sit at
equal level with Ravana, extending and  rolling his tail. Further when cloth
wasrolled and oiled and ignited on his tail, it could never harm him.

2.Praying to Hanuman

It is the belief that sincerepraying to hanuman, and giving offerings  can
relieve our sufferings to a great extend. There are many who offer Vadamalai;
Betel leavesgarland, butter adorning, and applying kumkum on tail etc. to Lord
Hanuman.

3.Monkeys and Hanuman temples

In the vicinity of Hanuman templesmostly we could see the monkeys on tree
branches.  However once a while we could one or twomonkeys traveling also
through places. Generally they do not attack us. But a few are found
threatening, bitingetc. of  their animal nature.

4.Kurangaantae kayyil kittiya poomala. (The garland in the hands of monkey)

This is a saying used on manyoccasions when people destruct  things
withoutcare.

A cooker, induction stove, TV, VCDplayer cordless phone or a remote, some
people are in a hurry to open, withoutreading instructions try to operate, and
most important- throwing away instructions andwarranty away. They find
difficult to operate and spoil halfway.

Probably this would have thebeginning of Hanuman tearing of the beautiful
garland complimented to hisefforts by Sita, and next moment, he started to take
out flowers (To see hisRama is there?  )

5.Markata mushti ( Unwanted stubborn ness)

Certain people have this nature forunwanted silly things  also. They
arespecific what they think should get done. They themselves know, they are
notcorrect some times.

Recently one carpenter was doingsome small repairs to furniture in my home. It
was the period of deepavali. Hewas talking about the stubborn nature of his son
( 10 years).  While he was telling, he will get a fewcrackers, the son was
stubborn in getting Rs 850-00 pack he saw somewhere.

He was telling me- after getting600-00 rupees wage, how can I make out for the
stubborn requirement of him. (His wife too support the son was  thebeauty with
out calming him)

When there is less money withhouseholder , some of his family members
(including wife) insist for travel in2nd AC for travel. They would not agree
for even 3rd ACin the train.

Sree Rama asked Hanuman  to get a Siva linga for worship from Kailasa, while
returning with Sita from Lanka crossing Sethu samaudram after killingRavana. He
was at Rameswaram. But even when the auspicious time was gettingnear , Hanuman
did not arrive.

Seetha made a Sivalingam withsand  and it was installed. After it
Hanumanarrived with his siva linga. He was unhappy over the installation of
Sivalingaalready.

Sri Rama asked him- Remove thisLinga, and we would install the Linga brought by
you there.  However with all efforts Hanuman could notsucceed to remove it.  In
Rameswaram wecan see one  sanctum where  Hanuman trying to remove the linga .

Later the linga brought byHanuman  was installed close.  Probably the markata
mushti would have its beginning fromit.

We can see everywhere people withmarkatamushti. One may think the other has,
while the other think, one has !!!

6.Manam oru kuraangu ( Mind is a monkey)

Monkeys appear always restlessdoing some thing or other.  Human mind isvery
often compared to monkeys on this account.

They normally scratch their body asif having itching. Somehow humans too have
got this nature to some extent.

Update-Now scratching stick to scratch backside is availablein many shops in
Chennai. Mostly the item is OUT OF STOCK in shops, probably demand is more,

7.Korangane maram keran patippikkano?( Is it necessary to teach climbing on
trees to amonkey?)

This saying is used to mean, certain things are by nature. We need not train
specially. Genetical transferis there. A barber’s son without his teaching,
will have instinct andcapability to do his father’s job. Similarly with
carpenters, cooks ,businessmen etc.

We can see children born to artistshave the tendency to draw through genes.

8.Employment to pluck coconuts.

I have read else where inLakshadweep  people domesticate monkeysto pluck
coconuts and they sincerely do it.

However when come close to hisboss, they use to be very helpful and sincere.

9.Different types of monkeys.

In the zoo we can see differenttypes of monkeys. I have seen black monkey in
the zoo only. I have seensimhavalan with white colour body in recent years when
I visited Mudumalaisanctuary. The normal monkeys are gray in colour.

Once in a blue moon I can seemonkeys in my area running through streets

10.Monkey stories

There are monkey stories showingtheir wicked action, obedience, copying and
intelligence. The story givenhere  is of intelligence.

Once a crocodile living in a riverbecame friend with a monkey living in a tree
near the riverside. Crocodile usedto carry monkey from one side to other side
of a river where there are treeswith fruits. Monkey was happy that crocodile
carry him to other side.

One day in the middle of the rivercrocodile desired to eat the liver of the
monkey. The monkey replied- You would have told itearlier. I have kept my liver
in  the tree. Take me back. I would goand get it for you. For our friendship
Ishould comply.

Foolish crocodile went back to thetree side. Monkey got down from its body,
climbed the tree, telling, he would  get the liver. Crocodile waited. Monkey
didnot come down knowing the aim of killing it by crocodile.
