ILAKKAM (ഇളക്കം) 

TheMalayalam word “Ilzakkam” generally gives the meaning shaking. Shaking is 
generally not a safe condition.When elephants become uncontrollable by mahouts, 
we mention it as Aaana ilakkam. 

The mostcommon body condition of ilakkam felt by us could be the shaking of 
teeth. Evenafter root canal, still shaking, swelling is not uncommon for teeth. 
Loosemotion is told as vayarilakkamin Malayalam. 

If earth could be dug little bit easily, wesay, soil has ilakkam. Such soil is 
good for cultivation. Normallywhile planting seeds or seedlings we stir a 
little after digging the soil tocertain depth and plant them. The roots could 
develop easily withoutdifficulty. 

A person having soft mind is told to haveilakunna manasu. This is somewhat good 
condition- Notalways. Sometimes such people could be deceived. 

A nailwhich we want to remove develop shaking on hitting is a favourable 
condition.But normally a picture hanging on a shaking nail can fall at any 
time. Normallyour work men resort to remove a nail by hitting slightly on sides 
and shakingit. 

On those days we had no zip in pants, we hadbuttons stitched. Similarly on 
shirts. When we start foroffice button could be tight, all on a sudden, it may 
fall down. On those days Mottu soochi(Pins) could help a lot. Those were the 
days re - stitching could bedone with tailors, who looked in to such things.  A 
loose button or missing button would get first attention of others. 

A shakingdining chair is more problematic than other chairs. It knows to break 
a leg when the person is easilysitting and enjoying food.   

Shaking natureis with some persons. Probably through genes. They will shake 
from lap top toTV and pillars to cots. Some children enjoy shaking pictures 
hangon wall.  It is the nature of many youngladies to shake curtains or books 
while talking. 

InitiallyI thought shaking by some people is as a precaution. Later I 
understood it anature. Such people aresometimes helpful.  Before us they 
willdetect the shaking of window doors and door panels or of the sort. 

Liquid Medicines in bottles has to be consumed aftershaking all times. 
Similarly some solid medicines taken afteradding warm water.  

Irecollect the sardarji joke- He started shaking himself-forgetting to shake 
thebottle before consuming a liquid medicine. 

“I will shake his seat” is sayingused to mean a small revenge on a person for 
some undesirable action. 

If aperson is asking help from a person already in troubles- it is told by 
saying –Ilakiya uttharathil Keri pidikkan nokkiyal. (Trying to hold on a 
shaking beam) 

Mytelephone is giving noise. Let me shake the wire and see if there is any 
looseconnection.
