(ABOUT SUN RISE WHEN COCKCROWED)

Dear friends,

This is 4th and FINALPART OF THE POSTING about hen/chicken/cock/Roost. I have
received a number ofresponses about my first three  parts ofpostings. Let me
further go in to interesting details

Sincerely,

38 Egg sales over the counter.

Normally eggs are not given in hand by the seller. In most of the shops they
will pack and keep over the counter. If any breakoccurs, it is the
responsibility of the buyer while taking it.  It is told if given in hand while
receivingin hand if the buyer does not hold, the pack may fall and entire eggs
would breakand get spoiled.

39. Incubation period and hatch rate

The average incubation period forchickens is 21 days but may depend on the
temperature and humidity in theincubator. Temperature regulation is the most
critical factor for a successfulhatch. Variations of more than 1 °F (1.8 °C)
from the optimum temperature of99.5 °F (37.5 °C) will reduce hatch rates.

The position of the eggs in the incubator can also influence hatch rates.
Forbest results, eggs should be placed with the pointed ends down and
turnedregularly (at least three times per day) until one to three days
beforehatching. If the eggsaren't turned, the embryo inside may stick to the
shell and mayhatch with physical defects. Adequate ventilation is necessary to
provide theembryo with oxygen. Older eggs require increased ventilation.

Home incubators are boxes holdingfrom half a dozen to 75 eggs; they are usually
electrically powered, but in thepast some were heated with an oil or paraffin
lamp.

40 Chickens as pets

Chickens are sometimes kept aspets and can be tamed by hand feeding, but
roosters can sometimes become aggressive and noisy. Some have advised against
keeping them around very young children. Certainbreeds, however, such as
silkies and many bantam varieties are generally docileand are often recommended
as good pets around children with disabilities. Some people find chickens'
behaviourentertaining and educational

41. Chickens in religion and mythology

There is a lot of reference forchicken in Mythology I read in wikipedia. Here I
include  a few of them which are  very interesting.

In Indonesia the chicken has great significance duringthe Hindu cremation
ceremony. A chicken is considered a channel for evilspirits which may be
present during the ceremony. A chicken is tethered by theleg and kept present
at the ceremony for its duration to ensure that any evil spiritspresent during
the ceremony go into the chicken and not the familymembers present. The chicken
is then taken home and returns to its normal life.

In ancient Greece, the chicken was not normally used forsacrifices, perhaps
because it was still considered an exotic animal. Becauseof its valour, the
cock is found as an attribute of Ares, Heracles, and Athena. The alleged last
words of Socrates as he died from hemlock poisoning, asrecounted by Plato, were
"Crito, I owe a cock to Asclepius; will youremember to pay the debt?",
signifying that death was a cure for the illness of life.

The Greeks believed that evenlions were afraid of cocks. Several of Aesop's
Fables reference this belief.

In the New Testament, Jesus prophesied the betrayal byPeter: "Jesusanswered,
'I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will denythree times
that you know me.'" (Luke 22:34) Thus it happened (Luke22:61), and Peter cried
bitterly. This made the cock a symbol for bothvigilance and betrayal.

In many Central European folktales, the devil is believed to flee at the first
crowing of a cock.

The chicken is one of the Zodiac symbols of the Chinese calendar. Also
inChinese religion, a cooked chicken as a religious offering is usuallylimited
to ancestor veneration and worship of village deities.

Vegetarian deities such as the Buddha are not one of the recipients ofsuch
offerings. Under some observations, anoffering of chicken is presented with
"serious" prayer (while roastedpork is offered during a joyous celebration). In
Confucian Chinese Weddings, a chicken can be used as asubstitute for one who is
seriously ill or not available (e.g. suddendeath) to attend the ceremony. A red
silk scarf is placed on the chicken's headand a close relative of the absent
bride/groom holds the chicken so theceremony may proceed. However, this
practice is rare today.

42 Vegetarian eggs.

Long back I had a remembrance of reading about vegetarian eggs. I got
thedetails searching website.

Chicks aged between zero andeight weeks are brought to poultry farms and bred
till up to 72 weeks when theybecome 'layers'. Normally, each layer lays about
300 eggs in poultry farms. However, these eggs are not totally vegetarian
because the hens are fedfishmeal (dry fish powder) as a protein supplement.

Instead of fishmeal, soya powder is added to the poultry feed as theprotein
supplement. 'Hence, eggs produced in ourcontract farms are fully vegetarian,'
asserts Hariharan from SKM products Erode

'If milk is vegetarian, then allcommercially produced eggs in our farms are
vegetarian.

Only, most of us use fish feed for the hens because soya feed isexpensive,'
says Namakkal Poultry Feeds and Egg ProducersAssociation president Nallathambi.

43. Chicken Hypnotisam

A chickencan be hypnotized, or put into a trance, by holding its head
downagainst the ground, and continuously drawing a line along the ground with
astick or a finger, starting at its beak and extending straight outward in front
of the chicken. If the chicken is hypnotized in this manner, it will
remainimmobile for somewhere between 15 seconds and 30 minutes, continuing to
stareat the line.

44. Chicken pox and chicken guinea

Both have no relation withchicken as Mysore pauk has got with Mysore

45. Which came first- Chicken or egg?

Thetheory of evolution states that species changeover time via mutation and
naturalselection. Since DNA can be modified only before birth, a mutation must
have taken place atconception or within an egg such that AN ANIMAL SIMILAR TO A
CHICKEN, BUT NOT ACHICKEN, LAID THE FIRST CHICKEN EGG.

Inthis light, both the eggand the chicken evolved simultaneously from birds
that were not chickens anddid not lay chicken eggs but gradually became more
and more like chickens overtime.

However,a mutation in one individual is not normally considered a new species.
A speciation event involves the separationof one population from its parent
population, so that interbreeding ceases;this is the process whereby
domesticated animals are genetically separated fromtheir wild forebears. The
whole separated group can then be recognized as a newspecies.

Themodern chicken was believed to have descended from another closely
relatedspecies of birds, the red jungle fowl, but recently discovered genetic
evidence suggests that themodern domestic chicken is a hybrid descendant of
both the redjungle fowl and the greyjungle fowl

Assumingthe evidence bears out, a hybrid is a compelling scenario that the
chicken egg, based on the second definition, came before the chicken.

A literal historic account ofGenesis would place the chicken before the egg.

46 Brahmandam

In Hindu writings, creation of birds(and other life forms) by God through
superhuman beings is stated in Purāṇas and Dharmasastras. However, if one
broadensone's definition of "an egg" to include non-chicken egg, the Hindu
mythology also mentions a "cosmic egg" from which the universe as known to
humansoriginated. In this sense this supremeegg comes before all creatures,
including chickens and chicken eggs. This egg is known as Brahmanda: "Brahma:
creator" and "anda": egg. The primordial egg is alsodepicted as a Lingam.

47 Rubber chicken

Theterm "rubber chicken" is used disparagingly to describe the foodserved at
political or corporate events, weddings, and other gatherings wherethere are a
large number of guests who require serving in a short timeframe. Chicken,
pre-cooked, is held at serving temperature for some time andthen dressed with a
sauce as it is served. Consequently the chicken meat istough or “rubbery.”

48. Why did the chicken cross the road?"

It isa common riddle/joke in several languages. The answer (or punch line)
is:"To get to the other side".
