கவையாகிக் கொம்பாகிக் காட்டகத்தே நிற்கும்
அவையல்ல நல்லமரங்கள் - சபை நடுவே
நீட்டு ஓலை வாசியா நின்றான் குறிப்பு அறிய
மாட்டாதவன் நன் மரம்
*விளக்கம்*
கிளைகளோடும், கொம்புகளோடும் காட்டில் நிற்பவை மரங்கள் அல்ல. சபையின் நடுவே
ஒருவர் தரும் ஓலையில் எழுதியிருப்பதைப் படிக்கத் தெரியாதவனும், அடுத்தவர் மனதை
அறியாதவனுமே மரம் போன்றவன்
*Transliteration*
Kavaiyaakik kompakik kaattakatte nirkum
avaiyalla nallamarankal capai natuve
niittu olai vaaciya ninraan kurippu ariya
mattaathavan nan maram
*English Translation*
The large trees of the forest are not the real trees.
But those who stand in front of a gathering
Unable to read and unable to heed
Are the ones who are the real trees

கான மயில் ஆடக் கண்டிருந்த வான் கோழி
தானும் அதுவாக பாவித்துத் - தானும் தன்
பொல்லாச் சிறகை விரித்து ஆடினாற் போலும்
கல்லாதான் கற்ற கவி
*விளக்கம்*
காட்டில் மயில் ஆடுவதைப் பார்த்த வான்கோழி உடனே தன்னையும் அதைப் போலவே
நினைத்து தன்னுடைய அழகில்லாத சிறகை விரித்து ஆடுவதை போன்றதே, கல்வி கற்காதவன்
சொல்லும் கவிதையும், அதனால் ஒரு பயனும் இல்லை. விஷயமும் இல்லை.

Kana mayil aatak kantiruntha van koli
tanum atuvaka paviththut tanum tan
polla cirakai virittu atinaar polum
kallathan katra kavi
*English Translation*
An illiterate person writing a poem
Pretending to be a learned bard, is
Like a turkey that pretends to be a peacock
Spreading its ugly wings and trying to dance

கற்றாரைக் கற்றாறே காமுறுவர் – கற்பிலா
மூர்க்கரை மூர்க்கரே முகப்பர் முதுகாட்டில்
காக்கை உகக்கும் பிணம்.

குளத்தில் பூத்திருக்கும் தாமரையை அன்னப்பறவை சேர்ந்தது போல கற்றவர்களைக்
கற்றவர்களே விரும்பிச் சேர்வர். சுடுகாட்டில் பிணத்தைக் காக்கைச் சேர்வது
போல, கல்வி
அறிவில்லாத மூடரை, மூடர்களே சேர்வர்

The swan in a pond seeks out the lotus flower, likewise
The learned will reach out to other learned men, but
The wicked will only seek out other wicked people
