Kudamulla poovinum malayaali penninum.Udukkaan vella pudava (Jasmine flowers).

Dear friends,

I have two smalljasmine plants in my garden bringing up in bonsai model. They
are trimmed at a height of3 feet periodically, bottom dried leaves and stem are
cut and kept tidy. Wateringis done daily. Now being summer both flowers.

One is ordinary andanother is Kudamullawhich gives more appearance and
fragrance. On an average they give 10-12flowers during flowering season.
Whatever the number of flowers my share isfive flowers to keep in the small
uruli about 4 inches in diameter and one inch in height,  in my table top with
few glittering coins  kept inside . The remaining goes to Pooja room

I was thinking ofwriting about jasmine flowers ever since more flowers were
appearing in thegarden.

Jasmine flowers areassociated with festive occasions and young women. It has
more importance inDevi temples and Lord Krishna temples. In Tamilnadu just like
a custom newlymarried men purchase and takes stitched jasmine flowers 2-3 yards
daily to hiswife. If flower is not brought the woman may not be happy.

In Kerala jasmineflowers are worn by young women more on festive occasions than
on a dailywearing.

During marriage theimportance given to jasmine garlands, jasmine stitched and
given cannot be toldin words. A lot of money is spent on it. For adorning
bridge a lot of stitched jasmineis used, many timeschanging to fresh ones at
intervals.

During upanayanamalso jasmine garlands and stitched flowers are used.  In north
India also jasmine is more usedduring weddings.

My title is from the film –Jwala, acted by Nazeer andSheela, sung by Jesudas
and B Vasantha

Jasmine has bright green, glossy foliage andlikes sun to light shade and
relatively fertile, well-drained soil. Somejasmine plants are evergreen,
meaning they will keep their green leaves year-round. Whilegrowing jasmine does
require some effort, it’s well worth it, as theplant will put on a profuse,
showy display of blooms that can liven up even thedullest of yards.

3 Planting Jasmine Flowers

Planting jasmine iseasy. Just follow these simple tips.

When to plant jasmine– Plant jasmine bushes any time between June and November.

Where to plant jasmine – Jasminewill grow well in full sun to partial shaded
areas. Summer-floweringjasmine does better in a sunny spot, while other
varieties, such as winterjasmine, like a more shaded area.

Soils that jasminethrive in – Jasmine needs well-drained but moist, moderately
fertile sandyloamy soil.

Supports for jasmine – If planting a twining vinevariety and wanting jasmine to
climb, the plant will need a support structure.A trellis or fence will both
work.

My note-My plants planted in 2006 were climbingthrough a wire to terrace close
to work area exhaust fan. But rats used thewire to climb up, and enter work
area through the gap in the wings, so I had tocut them after 2 years.

How to space jasmine – Jasmine should be plantedat least 8 feet, sometimes more
depending on variety, apart to accommodate forits future root growth, as it
will grow tremendously and does not like to becrowded.

How deep to plant – Dig a hole for the jasmine thatis just deep enough so the
plant will rest at the same level in the ground asit was when it was in the
pot. It doesn’t need to be planted in a deep hole.

4 Jasmine Plant Care

Jasmine is notparticularly hard to care for, but it does require some attention
in thebeginning and needs regular feeding and pruning. Learn howto care for a
jasmine plant below.

Watering – Jasmine flowers thatare in-ground should be watered once a week. If
it is unusually dry or hot, increase the frequency, but let the soil dry out in
between. If your jasmine isin a container, it will likely require water
multiple times each week, especially in the hotter months. Water it once the top
1 inch of the soil isdry.

Training – If growing jasmine to climb a structure likea trellis or fence, help
it by training young vines. Begin to train jasminejust after planting by
weaving young stems through the trellis sections or bygently and loosely tying
them onto the fence or support.

Amount of sunlight – Jasmine needs full sun or partshade – usually about 6
hours or more of direct sunlight each day for full sun,and 2 – 4 hours per day
for partial shade. The exact type of jasmine you plant,in addition to climate
and other conditions, will determine how much sun aplant needs.

Tips on how to prune – To prune jasmine, first removeany damaged, diseased or
dead stems from the plant to prevent any spread ofdisease. Then remove any
stems that are tangled or that no longer flower. Helpkeep trained jasmine clean
and tidy by snipping stems that are growing awayfrom the plant. Prune jasmine
blooms immediately after they flower so vineshave enough time to grow before
the following season. Pruning is easy – simplypinch the tips by squeezing them
between your finger and thumbnail. Proper andregular pruning will promote lush,
full foliage and rapid growth.
