NAIL- NAKHAM I was little confused first whether the spellingNAIL is same meaning NAKHAM as well as AANI in Malayalam and Tamil. I verified Oxford dictionary and found same.Both are sharp at one end.
Nakham isthick skin over flesh and the edge we see in dark colour is theDEAD CELLS. Hence while cutting nails we do not feel thepain. The moment the cutting equipment touch live area, we would feel pain, andblood would be coming. Just imagine- Without nail we wouldnot get grip in fingers, we cannot peel skin of orange or plantain. Even large size nail cutter. Files may be better. To beautify women used earlier Maruthani(Henna) and nownail polish on the nail. However nailpolish gives neat and beautiful appearance after cutting nails. Doctors ensurefinger nails are cut periodically, since they use hands for inspecting patients. At one time the barbers had special scissors andthey used to cut nails along with hair cutting for the aged and kids. Nowbeauty parlour makes the nail beautiful. For men also beauty parlours havecome. Nail is usedfor pinching.Some children are of pinching habit. Some school teachers on those days used topinch/smear students for not studying inthe ears. Why do teachers alone- Some mothers too pinch children on hands orsmear on ears for making them obedient. This still follows. However we are not as capable like cats which canwithdraw and extend nails as they wish. Ladies killedlace using nails from their hair. Now they either use gloves or other applications. Theyfeel it not hygienic especially in front of others. But lace grow still in longhairs. Regardingcutting of nails- Tues days and Fridays are prohibited for cutting nails. Evening time is prohibited for cutting nails. The concept is lakshmiwill not be happy with those houses. After wetting cutting nails is easier. Scissors usefor cutting nails is reduced with the coming up of nail cutters. After any damage in toes nails would not growproperly in the affected area- It is till his end of life. Sometimes nail inthe main toe in feet (Thallaviral) may grow hard. Filing could be a bettersolution. Nail would come as powder as told earlier. For some the flush under skin would swell and givepain. Nakhachuttu.Wearing a lemon in the affected area could reduce the pain and after days solvethe problem. For some gap can develop between flush and nail. Even a small dust/earth particle enter there can give pain- till the particle is removed. Washing feet clearly especially toe area and nails thereare suggested to diabetic patients during bath or at any convenient time. Fighting withtooth and nail is an English idiom meaning with all capabilities opposing the other. Nail biting is a habit with many. Forsome it is totally uncontrollable.
