Q1    How do youfeel when people ask, "Are you a Brahmin?" The moment you say
you'rea vegetarian?

A1     Bhuvana Rameshwar Former Teacher, 10h ago

I don't even sayI'm a vegetarian, yet they assume I'm a brahmin. Why, I don't
know.

May be because Iwas plaiting my thick hair when most of my friends cut their
tresses intoshorter flowy, hairstyles or with beautiful clips holding them in
high pony tails.I was in modern clothes yet had long beautiful plaits single,
sometimes two. This is thirty years ago. And I still do, I haven't cut them
short or dye them.

Most peopleconfused my skin colour too. Some assumed we had a love marriage.

One LIC clerk thoughtI was my son's wife and that we made a mistake when
filling the form …this wasthe most mistaken assumption.. I look younger for my
age thanks to my plait.

This pic is with myson, dil and grand child.

In restaurantssometimes they tell us it is a non-vegetarian restaurant as we
sit presuming weare Brahmins. Then we slam our hands on the table and say we
are pure non -vegetarians.

Some people thoughtwe were from Kerala as both of us do not look the typical
“Tamilian look” andcall us Chechi /yeta.. (sis /brother).

How do we feel?

We just laugh. Whatelse to do? We do tell them we are Tamilians from Chennai,
non vegetarians.

We have not madeany mistake in our dressing sense, we are genuine in our way of
talking, outspokeness or in our English, Tamil or Hindi accents. People presume,
assumebased on their exposure. We have nothing to do with it.

Q2              I've heard that Americans don'thave house maids and servants.
How do the rich people in America work then? Dothey also mop their floors? Do
they themselves clean their homes on their own?Do they have personal drivers?

A2              MattRiggsby MA Archaeology, Boston UniversityFri

The very wealthy may have full-time domestic staff workingfor them. But that’s
too expensive for the vast majority of people, and withour increasingly
egalitarian culture, particularly through the second half ofthe 20th century,
it feels a bit weird for a lot of people with working classand middle class
origins who become wealthier to have domestic servants.

However, a good many people do contract out that kind ofwork. For example, my
parents (reasonably well off but not rich) didn’t havemaids or anything like
that, but they did hire a cleaning service to come inand sweep up every week.
Very few people have a full-time driver on staff readyto go at any minute, but
a substantial number of people use taxis and rideshareservices like Uber and
Lyft. Hardly anybody has a live-in cook, but lots ofpeople get takeout or
delivery from restaurants. Rich people, and even somemiddle class people, don’t
do all the domestic labor themselves, but we don’thave full-time staff to do it
for us. We farm out that labor differently.

Q3              If there are Buddhist monks thateat meat and I know there are,
then why do some Buddhists insist that noteating meat is proper?

A3              Matt Riggsby MA Archaeology, BostonUniversityAugust 10

In Buddhism, one should not kill things or substantiallycontribute to their
being killed (for example, by telling someone to goslaughter an animal). That
includes killing things in order to eat them. Ergo, ideally, a Buddhist should
be a vegetarian. Vegetarians don’t incur the moralburden of killing animals.

However, there’s also a tradition of Buddhist monks beingmendicants. They
survive on charity, being fed by those around them. This meansthat they have no
choice in what they eat. Because they have no control overwhat food comes to
them, they have no moral culpability for it either. Therefore, at least in some
strains of Buddhist thought, it’s permissible formonks to eat meat under some
circumstances.

Q4              Howis the South Indian mentality different from the North
Indian mentality?

A4     ParasTyagi Writer, DTU, Inspector - Customs, GST (2018–present)Fri

Born and brought upin Delhi.Currently in Coimbatore.

People here don't crave the mundane tastelessgovernment jobs as much as the
north Indians do.

Here I leave myflat unlocked many a times when I go outside. In Delhi, our
neighbour who justwent out for an evening walk returned, only to find his
parked car stolen.Never go to park after park.

I always felt thatthe Delhi auto-drivers were an expert in elevating the fares.
Only when did Icome here, I came to realise how grounded the Delhi drivers were
because allthe elevators are in Coimbatore.

Delhiites lovetrying different foods and dishes but here people are quite
conservative whenit comes to trying foods from other parts of the country.

The servicesrelated to online start ups like Swiggy, Ola, Uber are not as
organised here asin Delhi. The delivery guys and the drivers are much more
cooperative in Delhi.

People stick to thelockdown norms more scrupulously here.

The rash driving ofpublic transport seems to be the norm here. Many a times the
buses have combedmy side hair. It's a miracle I'm still alive after walking
miles on the roads.I also have my ear.

In Delhi, whiledriving you accidentally hit a vehicle and then there is a war.
Here the peopleare relatively less aggressive and more polite.

There are lesscalories in weddings here literally and figuratively….unlike the
fat weddingsof Delhi.

The show-offculture here is on the back-seat. If this show-off culture ever
takes a backseat in Delhi, then the Delhiites will make sure it's the backseat
of an AudiA6.

This has beenwritten in lighter sense. It is from my perspective. No-where have
I claimedthat these are the facts.

Q5              Whatoffends South Indians the most?

A5              Bhuvana Rameshwar Observe humansAugust 1

There are so manygood answers here. But all these are outdated as now everybody
knows more. Thanks to higher education level, IT job transfers, more awareness
thanks toGoogle, YouTube, online searches, increase in tours and travels,
migrantlabourers in southern India and the frequent job placements abroad
whereIndians share apartments.

They know Bangaloreis different from Chennai, Allapuzha(allepey ) is in Kerala,
and Bahubali wasproduced by a Telugu director . Pondicherry is best for drinks
party and buyingnew cars.. And so on.

What offends aSouth Indian the most? Here in this answer, all southern Indians
are taken intoaccount

1.When in a groupof Indians the Hindi speakers speak in Hindi without any
concern that there arenon Hindi people in that group. This offends me,
irritates me, but I dosurprise them at the nastiest monent with my flair in
Hindi, with a beautifulUP accent. Not all can do that. They even comment on the
others. What if we dothe same? Just because the nurses talked in Malayalam in a
hospital in Delhi,it became a national news and issue !

2. Their drinkingsambaar from the bowls slurping with so much sound eeks.

3. They make fun ofus wearing salwar kameez saying it is not matching us, our
body, skin colour orit is not stitched properly.

4. Convenientlyasking us in Hindi some address or route not trying to talk the
local languageor English. Bangalore is now a North Indian Hindi speaking city.
Bangalore andHyderabad have seen Hindi take over the native languages Kannada
and Telugu.Everybody speaks Hindi, even if just a few words like “do doodh our
ek dahi “or Auto challega bhai. It is sad to see this. This is not so
thankfully inChennai or Trivandrum, Pondicherry and other major southern cities.

4. Making fun ofSouth Indian movies and heros..their accents, skin colour,
dancing and dressingsense. Making fun of south Indian actress body weight or
skin tone.

5. In manycosmopolitan offices the South Indians are made to do extra work as
theynaturally work hard or they are too meek to refuse extra work. This
makesdisappointed South Indians to look for jobs abroad asap. Many leave
Indiaciting this as one of the main reasons.

6. We are oftenmistaken for other states if we are slightly fair, good looking
and stylish. What an insult to our native land !

7. Because we doour work silently without any showing off and get promoted
easily, we arecalled as cunning, schemers, soaping the boss in our workplace,
offices.

8.We are accused asgold hoarders as we own gold jewellery as our tradition.
Even a lower middleclass wears minimum jewels especially the jhumka, payal.

9. Some make fun ofour Hindi accent not realising they do not know even one
word of our languages.

10. Words likeSambaar, Ayyo, etta, chechi, coconut oil, are used as troll names
for us panIndia colleges and offices.

11. We are hurt aswe are treated as a separate entity from INDIANS. unless
reminded.

Q6              Anelectric kettle rates 500W raise the temperature of 1 litre
of water from 25°Cto 100°C in 15 minutes. What percentage of electrical energy
is utilised inheating the water?

A6              Balakrishnan Ramakrishnan, M.TechEngineering, Indian Institutes
of Technology (1972) Answered March 24

Heat required toconvert 1 lire of water from 25 °C to 100 °C is (100 - 25) = 75
kcal. 1 kW ofelectrical power can produce 860 kcal/h. So 500 W of electrical
power canproduce 500/1000 x 860 x 15/60 = 107.5 kcal in 15 minutes. So,
percentage ofelectrical energy utilised in heating the water = 75 x 100/107.5 =
69.767 %.

Q7              Howwould you encourage a young couple who wants kids but are
uncertain now is agood time and are put off because of current world events?

A7              Ramya Annadurai Technical Writer(2007–present)Fri

Two of my friendsgot pregnant and delivered healthy babies during the first
wave of thepandemic.

One of them wasworried about the situation and delayed the pregnancy planning.

Herin-laws started trolling her.                        Iencouraged her to be
bold and go for the baby.A couple of months later, sheannounced her pregnancy
news to me.Now, she is a happy mother of 9 month oldgirl.

Q8              Isa pet parrot the only type of talking bird?

A8         Claire Jordan   Degree in biology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretaryon newspaperUpdated Sat

No, ravens (andother corvids), mynah birds and to some extent starlings can
also imitate humanspeech. Ravens do it better than parrots, though I don’t know
if they understandit as well. Parrots always have a bit of a parrot accent, a
bit squawky andbrassy, but a raven sounds like a tape-recording of human speech.

I’m told thatlyrebirds, bowerbirds and mockingbirds can all imitate human
speech as part ofa general tendency to imitate all the sounds around them.

Q9              Whichis the most favorite snack of Tamilians?

A9              Anwesha Barua (অন্বেষা বড়ুয়া)I dream of AlooParantha onlyWed

After living inMadurai for almost 2.5 years and observing the eating habits of
people here, one thing with confidence is that people of Tamil Nadu are crazy
about vada andthat too Ulundu Vadai.

I am sure Tamilpeople will agree this snack is something that you can eat
anytime. I have seenhow my office people biasing over this vadai over any other
variety of vadai.

And this vada goesgood with anything - tea, coffee, sambhar, rasam, or even
with biryani though Idon’t know people would love to disrupt the holiness of
biryani with vadai butnevertheless. But Ulundu Vada makes everything awesome -
if you’re sad, have avada. If you’re sad, have a vada. If you’re hungry, have a
vada and if you’renot hungry, you will still eat the vada as it looks tasty.
But in short UlunduVada is Godly!

Ulundu Vadai is aversatile one that looks grand and tastes phenomenal. It is
crispy from theoutside but so pillow-soft from inside. It is our version of
donut and I caneven gurantee that if have a chocolate ganache on the Ulundu
Vadai, it willtaste much better than donut itself (Don’t indulge in such
atrocities, it isjust to make a statement). I have grown to appreciate this
beautiful creationso much that I can never so no to vada if you offer me any
time of the day.

So next time yousee me, you will find me with tea and oru vada next to it!

Q10            Whydo bigger air bubbles rise faster than the smaller ones in
boiling water?

A10            Rick Kitson, former I Spent 9 YearsHelping Rebuild
AfghanistanAnswered Sat

It is an example ofthe cube square law.

The forces makingthe bubble rise depend on the amount of water that the bubble
displaces, itsbuoyancy. The forces slowing down the bubble depend on the
surface area of thetop of the bubble.

Double the size ofthe bubble and the surface area increases by 4 that is 2
squared but the volumeincreases by 8 that is 2 cubed. So as a bubble grows the
forces making it riseincrease much more than the forces that slow it down and
it speeds up.

I am a scuba diver,I see this in action every dive. Eventually the big bubbles
go so fast that theybreak up into smaller bubbles.

The cube square lawalso explained why humans cannot get much taller based on
our present form. Thearea of the bones, and hence the strength of the bones,
that support usincrease in area, the mass that they have to support increases
by the cube. Most of the tallest humans in history, those much more than 2 m
tall, tend tobreak bones, w especially leg and other bones that support the
body mass, moreoften than shorter people.

I will leave it toyou to apply this to explain how come ants cannot grow to
human size.

Q11            protein can you eat instead of meat?

A11            Alice Twain        Eating and cooking for 40 years. August 13

Fish. Dairy. Eggs.Pulses (beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc.). Grains. Nuts…

One importantdetail is that both pulses and grains don’t contain the full 9
essential aminoacids present in the other foods. But they complement each
other, so a dishthat combines a grain and a pulse contain the same array of
proteins as a pieceof meat.
