Q1           Why was sliced bread made illegal in the United States in1943?

A1           RyanHofmann October 19, 2017

On January 18th, 1943 pre-sliced bread was bannedby Claude R. Richard, the head
of the war foods administration. The reasons arenot clear, but there is
speculation that they wanted to save steel, wax paper, and wheat for the war
effort. FDA regulations hold that sliced bread requires more wax paper to be
made, and I believe that if you don’t have to pre-slice it, you won’t need the
tools,which can be used elsewhere.

Another reason is thatthey might have wanted tolower the consumption of bread,
which went up when sliced bread wasintroduced.

It is very unlikelythat they wanted to conserve wheat, as there was quite a
good stockpile at thetime. It’d be two years before the US ran out in the case
of a cessation offarming.

It was not popular.Lots of people like sliced bread.

Within 3 months, the order was rescinded, as “Our experience with the order,
however, leads us to believe thatthe savings are not as much as we expected…”

Q3           What happens to predators when they become too old tohunt? It
depends on the predator.

A3           NickNicholas , Studied Big Cats for 40+ years AnsweredNovember 14,
2020

It depends on thepredator. Pack animals like wolves do sometimes ‘carry’ older
individualsparticularly if those animals are of high rank.

In the case of lions,if it is a male, providing it can still see off other
lions trying to take thepride over it will still have a full belly. Eventually
though it will eitherrun or die as other males will take the pride over. In
very rare cases the females in the pride have beenknown to attack an old male
to drive him out.

In the case of a maletiger, again he may rely on the females whose territory
overlaps his for a freemeal. This was the case for a very famous male tiger
called Charger who finallypassed away peacefully in a cave just as his
territory got taken from him byhis grandson.

For the most part solitary predators will either be killedby a rival, in rare
cases starve to death, orbe killed by other species. Hyenas frequently prey on
old injured lions whohave been ousted from their pride.

The death of any animalwho was once a King is always a sad event but there is
always another to takehis place. As the old saying goes, ‘The King is dead,
Long live the King.’

2ND ANSWER- Dominic Johnson  Answered November 11, 2020

Its quite unusual foran animal in the wild to get old

Most die long before then

Cheetahs are a goodexample, if they miss three chases, they simply don’t have
the energy for afourth, unless they happen upon some amazing luck, they die,
and although thatWILL happen when they get old, it can and does happen earlier

They also face injury, and again, terminal, a broken toe and you arent chasing
anything, a brokentooth or claw and you arent fighting anything.

Many prey animals arecapable of fighting back, a bull will run through a wolf
and leave a greasystain on the ground, a boars tusks can just tear them open,
and a stag cancrush them in to the ground, even a minor injury can debilitate
enough to befatal.

At this point, the packanimals are in real trouble, because the former “alpha”
is about to bechallenged by one of the subordinates, and killed, or sent
packing.

Predators, are alsofood, or at least, rivals, killed on sight by their peers.

Wolves might feed anold or injured packmate, they might even slow down so it
can keep up, buteventually, a bear is going to see an injured wolf that can’t
run away, andthat wolf is bear food.

So, in short, it doesn’t happen

You are too injured tohunt and starve long before you are too old to hunt, or,
another pack ofpredators chase you away from your hunting grounds and you
starve long beforeyou are too old, or another predator kills and eats you.

I think Crocodiles arepretty unique in that actually do get old enough to die
of old age relatedstarvation on a pretty regular basis, they don’t really have
a pack, do huntcommunally, and fight each other for mates. May be big snakes
too.

Q4           Can a neighbour eat my tree's fruit if it is on his side?

A4           BhuvanaRameshwar Former Teacher, 1h ago

Yes. Because he sweeps the fallen dried leaves and birdpoops. Some also
tolerate bars, birds andsquirrel menace on their side which sometimes come
inside the house also . Solet them have the fruits on their side magnimously.
They will also take care ofthe tree on that side.

Otherwise if you fight with them over the fruits youmay have to face court
order of cutting the branches on his side as was done in Sheffield, South
Yorkshire, England. The treewas sliced down as the petty neighbour was
irritated by the bird sounds andpoop.

Now this tree hasbecome a place of tourists’ attraction.

Q5           As a frequent traveller, what is the big change you wantto see in
Indian Railways?

A5           SubramaniamDuraisamy IT Analyst September 10

As a frequent travellerin Indian Railways, I want not one change, but I want
many changes. Most ofthese are not only easy to implement, but also can give a
good travelexperience.

More high speed trains. The maximum operating speed of Shatabdi express from
Chennai to Bangalore is 85 kmph. Whereasthe maximum operating capacity of the
line is 120 kmph. Its criminal that abusiness traveller between Chennai and
Bangalore has to spend 6 hours in thetrain, when in developed nations the
distance is covered in less than 3 hours.

Seamless transition between different modes. If a travaller lands in Chennai
airport, he should be able to take a Metro ora local train directly to
Koyambedu Bus Terminus. In cities like Chennai, thisdevelopment is only recent
and frequency of trains is very less compared tocities like Delhi

Information kiosks. If a foreigner lands arrives at a city, there should be a
facility to avail information on the most affordable hotels, places of interest
and nearby tourism attractions along with the prices. Thiswill avoid him
falling prey to touts and cheats.

For repeat business travellers, there should be an option to avail concessions
on his price of tickets. Based on his travelhistory, the Indian Railways can
offer him some discount on the main charge andgive him an extra incentive so
that he does not shift to bus or air travel nexttime.

Wifi facilities in all trains. Currently there are only inpremium trains like
Rajdhani.

Q6           What do the coils on electricity poles do?

A6           Loring Chien electrical engineer for45 years Updated August 8

Do you mean these: That is a porcelain insulator usedto isolate the bare power
wires from the  pole. The corrugated ridged shape(not really a coil) increases
the surface length over which electricity has toflow so that surface
contaminants like water and conductive dust won’t leakacross the surface of the
insulator. These can withstand 10’s of thousands and even 100’s ofthousands of
volts; larger number of discs or stacks usually meansmore voltage insulation
capability.

Q7           How can a high-efficiency AC work so efficiently?

A7           RonMorel , B.S. Chemistry, United States Air Force Academy
(1979)Answered 9h ago

I noticed that when therefrigerant and efficiency rules changed a while ago
(15, 20, 30 years?) The outdoor units on residentialsystems grew much larger.
If the condenser has more surface area andan easier outdoor air flow, the cost
of cooling the high pressure gas goesdown. They have to be properly engineered,
but bigger coils make for betterefficiencies.

Q9           Is there a limit on the highest temperature you can set ina
split-type air conditioner?

A9           2Answers Venkateswara Swamy Swarna, former Scientist,Metallurgist,

Answered June 27, 2018

Yes, 16 C and 31 C are the limits in the split AC inmy room. I normally use it
between 21 and 27depending on the outside weather. I also switch it ON and OFF
periodically andin addition use the ceiling fan to keep the air comfortable and
reasonably dry.

When you set an AC to, say, 20 degrees, the AC continues torecycle the air in
the room until it reaches that level ofcoldness. The thermostat is set off at
that point. The compressor, then, takesa break and begins its task only when
the temperature has risen again.

The first possibility of a malfunction, therefore, is whenthe AC is set to a
very low temperature of say, 17 degrees. This means, first that the compressor
has to work for a longer time tobring the heat down from 45 degrees to 17.
Then, it cannot take a break sincein the summer heat, as soon as the air hits
17 degrees, it warms up againalmost immediately. The thermostat does not trip
and stop the compressor. Ergo, continuous pressure on the compressor. Coupled
with erratic power, it couldactually give way.

The second probable reason for an AC breaking down could beits positioning and
the state it is in.

If it directly faces the sun and is heated through theday, it is possible the
compressor will collapse or trip. Clogged filters and inappropriate tonnage too
could put a higherworkload on the compressor.

Maintain the roomtemperature at 24-26 degrees. Keeping the temperature at that
level helps intwo ways, says a technician. Our bodies are not subjected to
extremetemperatures when we move from one room to another, and the AC
compressor alsoget to rest between cooling cycles.

Q10         What's the source of the Dead Sea?

A10         MaarboletIrene Book Illustrator Mon

This isnot water at all, but a cocktail of different salts, which make
everything look green-blue and beautiful ... but this is notwater. And the
atmosphere around is saturated with minerals.

Since there is no other way out for water saturated withminerals, except to
evaporate into the surrounding atmosphere, the air abovethe Dead Sea is a
unique suspension of chloride salts: magnesium, soda, potassium, calcium and
bromine. One of these, bromine, known for its calming effects, is present in the
air of the Dead Sea at 20times the normal concentration. And then there are
thermal mineral springs.

The hot springs that feed the Dead Sea are characterized byunusually high
concentrations of salts and hydrogenous sulphides.

It is they who, in thefirst place, make this place a world famous resort with
exceptionalbalneological possibilities. The high content of salts and minerals
in the water of the Dead Seacreates a feeling of weightlessness in a person
diving into it and allows thebody to stay on the surface without the slightest
effort.

The Dead Sea mud is anatural sediment with a high content of sulfide components
and minerals, everythingis very healing and beautiful ...

but all the time Iremember a story from the Torah about how the cities of Sdom
