ASUYA (JEALOUSY) Dear friends,
All members know Sakunthala wasborn as the daughter of sage Viswamithra and apsaras Menaka who lead for yearsa good family life. Suddenly Menaka wascalled to heaven by Indra and the child was brought up by sage Kanva in hishermitage since Viswamithra did not agree to bring up her. At Kanvasrama, shehad two close friends. One was ANASUYA and the other Priyamvada. Anasuya meant no jealousy. Thefirst time such a name appearing in the epics if my thinking is correct. Thestory of Shakunthala appears in Mahabharatha. The story was made to drama by Kavi Kalidasa and is titled “Abhijana sakunthalam” When I thought writing aboutjealousy the first thing came to me was the name Anasuya. I referred Oxford dictionary-Three meanings are given for the word JEALOUS as follows: - 1. Envious of someone else’sachievements or advantageous. 2. Resentful of someone regarded as sexual rival.3. Very protective of one’s rights or possessions. The third meaning was not knownto me earlier. In this posting I amconcentrating to the first meaning. Kindly read till the end. Twoincidents which can make most laughing are told in the end of this posting. Sincerely, Gopala krishnan 14-2-2022. 1. Jealousy- a natural human feeling. Asuya is a human feeling. Therecannot be a person jealous of others at one occasion or other. There is asaying in Malayalam, “Asuyaikkum Kazhandikkum Marunnilla” (There is no medicineto cure jealousy and baldness) Sage Viswamithra was jealous ofVasistha and his power and popularity. Princess Sharmishta was jealous ofDevayani, daughter of sage Sukracharya in our epics. Brihaspathi (Guru) wasenvy at Sukracharya for his knowledge of bringing dead to life byMrithasanjeevani manthra. Princess Sathyabhama was jealousof Rukmini; Rukmini always occupied the position as 1st wife of LordKrishna. Some members may be recollectingthe Tamil film song “Punnakai mannan poovizhi kannan Rukminikkaka, Bhamarukmini iruvarumae avar oruvarukkaka…” during kolu in the film “Punnaikaimannan” acted by Late Gemini Gabesan, Jayanthi, and Sowcar Janaki in leadingroles. 2. Do we exhibit jealousy? Diplomatically some people maynot be expressing the feeling of jealousy but surely keeping in mind. Onoccurring of new events the old jealousy may be slightly pushed back. If a competition is going on allparticipants will be expecting the winning position. But top winners can beonly three ranked as 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Othersmay sometimes ignored, but the position holders might have a mutual jealousy isthe real fact. No 3rd winner will think I am not capable to come asfirst. It is something similar to thefailed candidate shaking hand with the winning candidate simply for a formality. 3. Jealousy among children Even among small children we cansee the feeling of jealousy. If a child of 5 years wearing good dress is appreciatedand another child having still good dress not appreciated for some reason, wecan see the second child trying to spill some water or anything on the dressworn by first child. One can see small children tearing pages of book ofanother, taking away pencil, pen etc. of another on account of jealousy. Nobodyteaches a child about Jealousy. We can see a small boy push, beatetc. another, for the reason he could not establish friendship with a particulargirl because of that boy. The girl may be avoiding the first boy making himmore jealous. 4. Jealousy among grown-ups. While two persons together areworking in an office with the same service, one of them given out of turnpromotion, it cannot be tolerated by the unfortunate. Out of jealous, he maytry his best to create some issue or other. Similar to any other feeling jealousyalso may reduce or worsen in course of time. 5. Getting lottery The jealousy of others can wellbe seen when somebody known to them getting a lottery of 15 lakhs to say on a100-00 rupee ticket by others. Jealousy mostly is seen among equals. Eitherwith higher level or lower levels Jealousy is very less. I had no jealouslywith my chief General Manager or Director Generals. But when my very junior DE who reported to me as JE got promoted above me on account of his reservation quota. Firstfeeling came on such occasion was only jealousy, I can surely tell you now. 6. LCD and LED TV The LED TV has more qualities andpriced more. LED TV of the same dimension is priced 1.5 Times of LCD TV. One could observe on those days, the murmuring onaccount of jealousy by theaccidentally LCD TV purchased fellow (without knowing the merits of LED TV) onthe higher qualities of LCD TV and he would say the other fellow has simply gotfooled by paying more. LCD TV Last more than the LED TV. Sometimes even afterhaving purchasing capacity, some may not like to spend more. They will keephigh the LCD TV and tell the LED has just appeared and on trial. It is wise notto purchase LED and he had purchased LCD on that account. Update- Now with android TV and LED TV since LCD TV has become obsolete. The people who have purchased dishantenna set up box set on it’s appearance with 3000-00 plus rupees from Tata sky would try to satisfy thequality is best then comparing to the present Rs 1500-00 plus. These are allforms of jealousy to satisfy them. That person would not admit, since theygained the investment, price had been halved. 7. Effect of jealousy. You purchase an item and go toanother shop to purchase something else. He would ask the price of the itempurchased. To your utter dismay he would quote the price in his shop is 15-20 %less. The actual fact might be different. The aim is to create a paid more feeling inyou, and he enjoys a happyjealous feeling. After experiencingonce or twice, I decided to purchase a new one from him also in an instance.The real picture appeared- After a lot of search he replied- His brother inshop might have sold the last two pieces… (Actually item may be available) 8 The jealousy incident. I read it long back and in nut shellis as follows: - Three persons got stranded in an island. One was a peon, anotherclerk and the third their officer. Somehow eating fruits, roots etc.they were managing waiting for some boat to save them. Suddenly a Genie appeared infront of them. Genie said he would complete their wish whatever it could be.First the peon asked for liquor since he was not getting any drink in the isolatedplace. The clerk slightly weak with women wanted a beautiful young woman in aseparate place in the island. Both their wish was granted and they left theplace. Now it was the turn of officer. He was envious of both. Oneman enjoying liquor and other person enjoying company of woman. He forgot theaim of getting a boat. He said- He has urgent work to be done, get the peon andclerk before him. Genie brought both of them in his front. The extremity of jealousy. 9. Jealousy on papad and plantain Once Valiya pappadam (Big sizepapad) was serving in a sadya with tasty banana. One person was servedcorrectly fried papad in good light yellow colour. The next one was servedslightly over fried papad. It was slightly brownish. Both of them were served good plantain.The second one was served banana with its skin slightly more peeled at top. The second fellow could nottolerate the correctly fried papad served to the first. He looked at his papad again andagain. The first fellow felt somethingrotten. He looked at 2nd’s more peeled banana. Carelessly he kept his banana kept on top ofpapad away from it. The second fellow called thesupervisor- “I am sweating like anything. Increase the speed of fan. He held hispapad firmly with banana over it. The first fellow’s excellent papad fell on thefloor and broken to pieces. The second fellow said “sorry- your papad had fallenbecause of me (Really happy in mind that correctly fried papad fell down). Thefirst man was served a new papad, more brownish than 2nd one’s. There was no limit tothe enjoyment of second man.His jealousy faded. The first fellow decided to revenge“You saw me looking at your plantain. There was a big fly sitting in the skin removed open tip.It had just flown when the fan speed was increased. Better not eat that banana.The first fellow lost his papad and 2nd fellow his banana. Withouttelling he was again supplied a small banana.Tit for Tat 10. The file cover story. The other day I was returning fromshop after purchasing a few file covers. One of them had dust over it. I did not bother much about it, since therewere only a few in the shop of the type. Having enquired the price andremarking about dust, one of my friends met me on the way left for his works. I was slightly disturbed. I could haveavoided that file cover. I could have purchased from some other shop. Next day while I went out, Ifound him coming with new file covers. He said he purchased from another shop, CAREFULLY SEEING. It appeared as a hint I was notcareful of the dust in previous day. I just like that asked him togive one. It had additional punching holesmistakenly put wrongly inside. I just remarked, these are donemechanically and due to misplacement of board during punching it would haveoccurred. He murmured- Yesterday I would not have told you about dust. Today I am paid for it. …(Who felt jelousy-I or my friend?
