At thattime, a sadhu came to the temple for the darshan of Lord Ganapathi. The airblowing within the precincts of the temple first touched the sadhus body andthen the body of the child. Lo ! all the afflictions of the child were cured atone stroke. The child became a young beautiful child of 13/14 years. The Sadhu went away. Kamala came back and waspleasantly surprised to see the cured child. That sadhu was none other than Rshi Mudgala. Q5 What are the details of Moudgalya gothra? A5 The Kingof Kundinapura died without a progeny. Rshi Mudgala asked the ministers to put a garland on the trunk ofroyal elephant and make it rounds of the town among people. Theelephant on its rounds entered the temple and garlanded Daksha, and thus he wasmade king. Mudgala and Thytharia Upanishad The ninthverse in the first prsna of this Upanishad is regarding Swaadhyaya prasamsa. Atthe end of the verse the following lines occur: Satyamithisatyavacha ratheetharah | Tapa ithitaponithyaf paurushishtih || Swadhyayapravachane yevethi nako maudgalyah | Thadhi tapasthadhi tapah || Ratheetharah says that truth issupreme. Paurushishthisays Tapah is superior. Whereas Naka (a rshi belonging to Maudgalya gothra)says that self learning and teaching are the only two duties ordained to asage. His views are accepted as final. He also composed stotrams likeAshthalakshmi stotram, Guruvathapureesha Pancharatnam and two dashakams onJadabharata Upakhyanam. Hewas the prime and foremost cause for propagating NARAYANEEYAM, in Tamil Naduand other parts of India. In his later years he took Sanyas and attainedsamadhi Rig Veda and the Maudgalyas NOW let us deal with some sages belonging toMaudgalya Gothra. It seems initially, the Mudgalas were Rig Vedis.Sage Vyasa ordered Rshi Pyla to study Rig Veda. Pyla divided Rig Veda into twoSamhithas and gave them to Indra Pramathi and Bhashkala. Then the latterdivided his Sahmhitas into four parts and gave them to Bhodhi, Adimadaka,Yaajna Valkya and Parasara. Indra Pramati did not divide his Samhita andgave it as it is to his son, the great Mandookya. Through him it descended tohis disciples and their disciples. However, among them, Vedamitra of SakhalyaGothra divided this Samhita into five parts and gave them to MUDGALA, GOMUKHA,VAATSYA SHALEEYA & SHAREERA. Q6 What is the story of Priest Mudgala inChola Kingdom? A6 Once aChola King went to temple to have Bhagawat Darshan. There he worshipped LordVishnu with ruby and pears and golden flowers. There he saw a citizen from hiskingdom, named Vishnudasa, who was worshipping with Tulsi and water. Thearticles with which the monarch worshipped Vishnu were covered by Tulsi used byVishnudasa. Then ensuedan argument between the two and ended with a bet as to who will get into theVishnu chaitanya first ( getting salvation). Themonarch started a Vaishnava Yaga with Mudgala as his priest. This yaga was equalin splendour to the one conducted by Lord Brahma at Gaya. Vishnudasaon the other hand, followed the vratas and utsavas (fasting and festivals) toplease Lord Vishnu. Some timeelapsed. One day, Vishnudasa saw that his food was stolen. In order to performhis Puja in time, unobstructed, he remained hungry on that day. The theftcontinued for seven days and he remained hungry throughout the week. On theeighth day, he found out that a Chandala was stealing the food. Vishnudasa told that lean and bony Chandala this food isvery dry, you also take this ghee to make it more palatable. The chandalastarted running away, but fainted. Vishnudasa fanned him with his angavastra(towel) to bring some breeze. Lord Vishnu appeared with his Conch, Chakra (wheel) and Gada(maze) and embraced his devotee. The Lord gave him Saroopya mukthi. Hearingabout Vishnudasas mukthi, the Chola king told his priest, Mudgala, I startedthis sacrifice in competition with Vishnudas, who has attained moksha today. Whatever I have doneso far is a waste. He gave his kingdom to his nephew and went to the yagashalaafter praying to Vishnu he entered into the sacrificial fire. Lord Vishnu appeared from the fire and tookthe Chola king to Vaikuntha in his own plane. The priest became very angry with himself and cut off histuft and remainedtuft-less for the rest of his life. His descendents also followed suit.(source: Padmapurana- Ch. 110 & 11). The gothramwhich is uttered by Brahmins in front of elders or any sages or in any ritualsspecifies the generation to which a particular person belongs. This utteranceis called pravara; in this pravara the ancestors of Sandilya are also mentioned. Q7 Who was sage Koundinya? A7 Kaundinyais the first disciple and arahant of Gautama Buddha, see Kaundinya the Nameof a famous Rishi (Seer) of Ancient India. A HinduGotra or Clan name, named after the Rishi Kaundinya. Kaundinyawas born before the time of Siddhartha to a wealthy brahmin family in a townnamed in Donavatthu, near Kapilavastu, and was known by his family name. ThatSiddhartha would either become a Chakravarti (supreme king) or would renouncethe world and become a supreme religious leader. Kaundinya was the only one that explicitlypredicted that Siddhartha would renounce the world to become a Buddha, raisingone finger and stating his prediction.
