Q3 Do pithrukarma is only for parents? A3 Pithru karma isnot merely for the parents it is for one and alls who has associated with us in this janma and pastmany janmas andalso those who are connected with us directly indirectly. What we offer to our forefathers and all those who were responsible for ourexistence to on this earth cannot be explained but merely physicalwords. Q4Do Dakshina is a charity? What are the details of Dakshina payment? A4 In all Vedicceremonies dakshina to the officiating priests and 'daanam' or the gifting ofcash and various useful articles to the priests and other Brahmanas presentforms an important ingredient. This should not be looked upon as mere charity intended tobenefit the recipients. The main purpose of these gifts is tohelp the spiritual progress of the giver. The tendency to accumulate wealthand cling on to it is natural in every human being. The Upanishads declare thatas long as this tendency remains in the mind, there is no hope of spiritualprogress for the individual. A hymn in the Saamaveda exhorts every one to counterthis tendency by giving freely of one's wealth to others. In the Brihadaaranyaka UpanishadBrahma, theCreator, instructs human beings to give 'daanam' liberally, in order that they may get ridof the defect of greed which is a serious obstacle to spiritual progress. The Bhagavadgita says that greed is one of thegates to hell. It is therefore in the interest of the spiritual development ofthe giver that the institution of 'daanam' has been built into every religiousceremony The importance of dakshina is brought out in the followingextract from the Bhashya (commentary) of Sri Sankaracharya on theBrihadaaranyaka Upanishad: "The yajna (sacrifice or any other Vedic ritual) restson the dakshina to the priests. The fruit of the Vedic rite accrues initiallyto the priests who actually perform it. It has to be acquired by theyajamaana (the person for whose benefit the ritual is meant) by paying dakshinato the priests. The dakshina rests on faith because when a man has faith hegives dakshina to the priests; if he has no faith, he does not give it. 'Faith'implies liberality--- faith in the Vedas coupled with devotion". ***There is atendency among some people to spend lavishly on all other items in a marriagebut to economise when it comes to dakshina and daanam. Compared to the total amount that has to be spent on amarriage these days the amount that goes out by way of daanam and dakshina is avery small percentage, but the result attained cannot be evaluated in materialterms. One shouldtherefore be as liberal in giving dakshina and daanam as he is in respect ofthe other items of expenditure My note- ***Nowadays the sasthrikal fix first hisdakshina before accepting to be the priest for the function. A8 Annual Sraddham (PratyaabdikaSraddham) Is required to be performedaccording Parvana Vidhananm by eachsurviving son to his departed parents. Only where the brothers are living in a joint family, eating food cooked from one set ofpots, utensils or cooker etc., the eldest brother alone need to perform Sraddhamand the younger brothers need to be only present at the occasion for doingprostration and pradakshinam of Brahmanas who are officiating in the Shraddham. If the brothers are living separately orifpartition of ancestral property, wealth etc. has been done, each of them has to perform Sraddham independently. That is what the Dharma Sastras lay down. Q9What is the reasoning told for the abusive language of devotes during theKumbha Bharani at Kodungallur etc. A9 The Devi is just their mother, many have anger towardthe mom because she has not looked after them well in the way they expected. But it is theirmother and so they present their views in the most abusive language. It is their privilege to shout at theirmother. But the mother could understand it because they are all her children. If they are drunk, sheknows it is out of frustration and partly out of the embarrassment to approachthe great mother in their lowly status in life. For the Lokamatha, the ignorant drunkard whoaddressed her with love in the most abusive language and the Vedic pundit whopraises her with vedic sookthas are all her own Children. This rush of innocentdevotees for Bharani has continued through ages and ages. Q10 Whether Siva has told about Vishnu Avathar toParvathi? A10 Yes. Both of you came to me for the samepurpose. Both of you are dear to me. So saying, he gave Thondaman, his Bhaktha, the conch and thewheel(Sudarsan) for being used in thebattle, while he himself fought on the side of Vasudanan, riding on a chariot. There were heavy casualities onboth sides. Thondaman’s son fiercely fought with Srinvasa but could notovercome him. So he tried the Sudarsan on him praying Sri Hari. That hit Srinivasa on his chest and hefell unconscious on the chariot. On hearing that her husband felldown unconscious, Padmavati rushed to the battle field and rendered him first aid, which helped him recover. He soon became conscious, Padmavati then suggested toSrinivasa that since both Vasudanan andThondaman were their near relatives, the kingdom may be equally divided between them. Srinivasa didso. From then onwards Vasudanan andThondaman lived in peace co-operating with each other. Vakula devi(Padmavathi) reachedSeshachalam. I desire to make Seshachalam my permanent abode till the end of Kaliyuga. So, you build me atemple. As the celebrations were at theinstance of Barhma, that was calledBrahmotsavam. From then on, the utsav is being celebrated every year in themonth of Aswayuja. The two devies (Lekshmi andPadmavathi ) began quarelling andcalling names.Meanwhile, Srinivasa silently moved and converted himself into an idol. When the two querelling women turned back they could find in place ofSrinivasa only an idol of his shape. So, they stood on either side of the idol. Q13 What is Nandi sraadha? A13 The Nandishraddha is performed as anoffering to the ancestors and their deities (Nandimukh and others) just as LordGanesh is worshipped before commencing any auspicious ceremony to ward off anyobstacle. One copper coin (paisa)is thrown towards the south as an offering to the ancestors in the region ofancestors (pitrulok)situated in the south and to the distressing energies from that direction sothat they do not cause trouble. Another copper coin is thrown towards the north as anoffering to benevolent deities. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
