CULTURAL QA 04-2022-19 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Since snakes or reptiles generally dislike the smell ofonions/garlic and it keeps them away, by that logic do you decrease the chancesof a snake bite by rubbing onion on your legs before a jungle hike? A1 Donna Fernstrom Professionalball python breeder from 2007 to 2014.Fri Snakes dislike you - theydon’t want you near them. They’re afraid of you. That’s why they bite you. Not because they’re mean, territorial, or malicious.Just because they are afraid. They don’t care about onions.Onions aren’t scary - you are. Wear high sturdy boots. A snake bite is almost always an accident - youdidn’t see the snake, and the snake didn’t see you in time to get out of theway, so you stepped on or right near it, and it defended itself. Q2 Why are Indian public schools and hospitals so bad? Doesfault lie on governance, corruption, or poor funds? A2 Balaji Viswanathan Center-right,moderate conservative. Apr 13 Government can run high quality schools, colleges and hospitals — Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sainik schools, IITs, IIMs, NITs,AIIMS are all fully owned and operated by the Indian government and are the best in their respective categories. The quality of the publicamenities depends on the quality of the government running them, amount invested and the quality of people usingthem. In states such as Kerala, a lot of attention is paid to public utilitiesand thus fairly well run. Two years ago my son had a small accident while wewere holidaying near the Alapuzzah beach. I took him to a nearby governmenthospital and things got resolved quite efficiently. How Kerala's efficient publichealthcare system impressed this CEO? Balaji Viswanathan gives an account of his experience in Kerala When I got Covid during my visit to Chennai, I had my testing and basichealth delivered in a government health center there. My grandfather had ahorrific accident a few years ago. He was again taken to a government hospitalin Chennai — Stanley — as that was the best for those kind of complexity. Politicians in Delhi first headto government run AIIMS in case of trouble. Because that is one most capable ofhandling care. Central government usually runs its services well and some stategovernments do too. Why cannot others? Investment in publicinfrastructure in many states is poor. Outcome is often related to investment in. IITs and AIIMS get good moneyand provide good outcomes even if government run. The quality of governance. Insouthern states thegovernance standard is a little higher than some of the interior states. Whengood leaders are elected this gets fixed. The nature of beneficiaries oftenimpact the service. In centralgovernment schools, the teachers have to deal with children of educatedprofessionals. In state government schools it is often poorer children and thissets up a vicious circle. Q3 How do train drivers know which way to go on tracks? A3 Ankit Barnawal Former Student at Doon Business School,Dehradun (2017–2022)Thu The train drivers does notdecide on which track the train needs to go. The changing of tracks of the trains are controlled bytraffic light signals. These traffic light signals are controlled by theRailway Control roomof that particular station on which the train is passing by. The image is of Mau Junction railway station in Uttar Pradesh. There arefour tracks shown in the image. The line just next to the signal is the mainline. On the right side of main line, there is a platform and on the left, there are two loop lines for goods train. When the train moves from the main line to the other lines, it is calledbranching. See the white arrow in the image. You can see the Junction routeindicator. There are three route indication in the signal. To know on which track the trainneeds to go, the loco pilot needs to see whether the signal is red or not. If the signal is red, the loco pilot needs to stop the train before thesignal. If the signal is yellow, the loco pilot needs to see the indication ofthe track just above the yellow light. If the indication is towardsright, the train will go on Platform. If the indication is one/two lineleft, the train will go on one/two loop line on the left. Below is the image of a train Chhapra - Mumbai LTT Express (11060) As seen in the image, the train is standing at Bhatni Junction onPlatform No. 2 after the locomotive reversal. You can see the signal of thetrain. The signal is yellow and the white light is on above the signal for thetrain to go to right side i.e. towards Mau Junction. At Bhatni Junction, the railway line diverges into two direction i.e. oneline on left side towards Chhapra Junction and the other line on right sidetowards Mau Junction. On the reverse journey of the train i.e. if the train goes towardsChhapra Junction, only the yellow signal will remain on and the white lightwill remain off for the train. So to conclude my answer, The train loco pilot are in charge ofmoving and stopping the train as per the signal. The signal is indicated through routingsignal (which is the part of home signal). Q4 Do thermostats intelligently switch between hot and coolmodes? A4 Foster MacKenzie, B.A.,B.E.D.S., B.Arch Architecture & The Environment, DalhousieUniversity-Halifax (1979)Answered 2h ago They can. The NEST t-stat is very smart and canautomatically moderate between heating and cooling as the interior temperaturechanges. Most ductless air conditioning units have an “automatic” setting whichflips between cooling and heating as needed. 2nd answer- Loring Chien , Passenger on planet earth observingscience for 68+ years Answered 37m ago I’ have never seen a dumb thermostat that would. However my Nest Thermostat does.At work we had environmental chambersthat would hold +/- 1 degree C and its controller would switch from full heatto cool modes to do so. All the way from -40 C to 100 C. 3rd answer- Non Believer , former engineer (1975-2017)Answered2h ago A sensor continuously sends temperature of space to be monitored. Atpredetermined temperature the thermostat sends signals to switch on or off somerelay which controls some other equipment My note- In electric iron thethermostat functionseffectively in increasing temperature. While decreasing temperature, the ironhas to cool down and effect of thermostat to retain lower temperature takes time. A suitable note I have found with Philipsiron with thermostat. Q5 Why does a train with a locomotive have two loco pilotswhile the local trains have only one in Indian railways? A5 Subhasis Dutta Roy Workingin Indian Railways at Indian Railways (2001–present)Thu This is a local/EMU cab. You can see that there is an additional seat apart from the maindriving seat like a locomotive. It means there was a provision forthe assistant loco pilot in EMU/MEMU also. To date so far my knowledge in the long distances EMU trains an ALP isdeputed with the motorman /Loco Pilot of that EMU. But mostly there is noprovision for the deputed ALP in EMU or local train. The reasons are below. When an ALP initially joined heis going through an initial training mainly based on locomotives. During this training period, he only gainsknowledge about the functioning of the locomotive. There is no provision forgaining knowledge about EMU functioning. So when an ALP working in EMU he only knows about the emergency brakingand nothing else about the functioning of EMU. In case of emergency or anyabnormality that happens with the motorman is minimised through Deadman Switch. Motorman has to press this by the pressure of hishand during driving of EMU. if any abnormality happens withthe motorman he could not hold the pressure and with the release of that pressure, emergency brakes will apples, consequently train will stop. This Deadman reduces the risk of any mishappens also along with thedeputation of ALP in EMU. The second reason for not to depute ALP in EMU lies in the promotionalstructure of loco pilots in Indian Railways. ALP to Shouting Pilot then Loco Pilot Goods(Freight trains) lastly LocoPilot passenger(Motorman). An ALP gained knowledge about working in Locomotive during his trainingperiod. This knowledge become more mature when he worked in Locomotives on anopen line. This knowledge helps him tobecome a good Loco Pilot of freights trains in his future. When he gets a promotion to the post of passenger he will giveadditional promotional passenger driver training in the training centre. The third reason is purelytechnical. Locomotives pull coaches or wagons and it needs attachment and detachments and also others various attentionduring their running route. So if there is only one locopilot in locomotives how he can manage all those requirements for the saferunning of a train en route. Soit is a must to depute an ALP in Locomotive. On the other hand, EMU is acomplete rake no need to look after them during his run en route. So practically there is no need to provide an ALPin EMU. Q6 Why didn’t birds evolve to lay live babies that could takeflight shortly after being born? A6 Claire Jordan Degree inbiology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaperSun That would require the motherbird to be actually pregnant. Then she would have to either have only one babyat a time, or be too heavy to fly, or carry a litter of babies that were really tiny, defeating the objectof the exercise - whereaseggs can be made one at a time as they are laid, without weighing the motherdown. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the flightless birdseventually evolved to give live birth, but they haven’t been flightless allthat long in evolutionary terms. Q7 Is regular body soap as effective as floor cleaning detergentto clean the floor? A7 Robert Goodman studied at The University of Health Sciences/ TheChicago Medical School Answered 32m ago That’s the trouble with hard surface cleaning: the answer could be “yes” or “no” depending on thedetails. Most of the time what you’d like for mopping the floorwould be to use as little liquid as possible, not need to rinse, and soak itall back up into the mop so there’s no water left to dry on the floor. But youcouldn’t really do that if the floor were greasy. In that case you’d have toget down there with a scrub brush or a machine, soap and scrub a small area ata time, and supply enough water to rinse it and have a way to suck it back up, and there’d actually be no betterdetergent for that than “regular body soap” or the equivalent. Butabsent such a need, you don’t want to get the floor too soapy, but just mopwith a little bit of wetting agent in the water and possibly a larger amount ofalkali as in Spic ’n’ Span, ammonia water, or the like. When waxing floors wascommon practice, you’d use an ammoniated cleaner to penetrate and remove thewax and embedded dirt preparatory to putting down clean wax. If the alkali are not required, thenthe wetting agent in the bucket might as well be a low concentration of“regular body soap”. My note- Since the upaveetham cannot be removed frombody during bath, cleaning is done by bath toilet soap. Q8 Does New Zealand have as many deadly animals and insects asAustralia? A8 Jack Benson StudiedNeuroscience (Graduated 1976)1h Much fewer - there are twospider species that give a nasty toxic bite that could possibly be fatal tosomeone severely allergic (thekatipō, Latrodectus katipo, and the redback spider, Latrodectus hasselti).Deadly vertebrates are marine - mostly sharks, killer whales and very rarelythe seriously venomous yellow bellied sea snake (Pelamis platura) - kraits arealso sometimes seen. New Zealand does have some very toxic plants. Q9 Why do all south going Rajdhani Express departs fromNizamuddin instead of the new Delhi railway station? A9 Ankit Barnawal FormerStudent at Doon Business School, Dehradun (2017–2022)Apr 13 In Delhi, there are 5 main railway stations. They are :- New Delhi (NDLS). Old Delhi Junction (DLI). Delhi Sarai Rohilla (DEE). Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM). Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT). All these 5 main railway stations in Delhi are made as per the routes fordifferent cities in India like trains halting, originating and terminating atNew Delhi railway goes to every routes of Indian Railways i.e. Kanpur, Jhansi,Kota, Jaipur, Ludhiana etc. Similarly, trains originating and terminating at Anand Vihar Terminalgoes towards North East side and eastern part of India via Uttar Pradesh andBihar. Trains going towards Jaipur and other cities of Rajasthan like Jodhpur,Bikaner etc goes from Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway station and trains going towards CentralIndia and Southern India cities like Bhopal, Nagpur, Pune, Bangalore, Chennaietc goes from Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station. Hence, in this way the train travel routes are made for different cities. In Indian Railways, there are currently 24 operational pairs of RajdhaniExpress for all capital cities of different states. Rajdhani Express for Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu andKashmir, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal originates and terminates at New Delhi. All these Rajdhani Express originating and terminating at New Delhipasses via Kanpur, Jhansi, Kota, Jaipur, Ludhiana i.e. in different routes ofIndian Railways. New Delhi railway station holds the record for the largestroute interlocking system in the world i.e. 48. Rajdhani Express for Agartala originates and terminates at Anand ViharTerminal. Rajdhani Express for Goa, Karnataka, Kerela, Tamil Nadu, Telanganaoriginates and terminates at Hazrat Nizamuddin. There are 3 Rajdhani Express for Maharashtra state in which oneoriginates and terminates at New Delhi and the other two trains originates andterminates at Hazrat Nizamuddin. On a conclusion point, thereare 3 railway stations which are originating and terminating stations forRajdhani Express. New Delhi (NDLS). Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM). Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT). Now, coming to the main questionwhy do all south going Rajdhani Express departs from Nizamuddin instead of theNew Delhi railway station ? The basic reason behind all south going Rajdhani Express departs fromNizamuddin instead of New Delhi railway station is to cut down the travel time. But how ? Suppose, all south going Rajdhani trains are leaving for differentcapital cities from Delhi, they depart on time and reaches their respectivedestination like Chennai, Goa, Bangalore etc. In the return journey, when those Rajdhani Express departs from thosecapital cities for Delhi, they are terminated at Hazrat Nizamuddin instead ofNew Delhi. This is doneto cut down the extra travel time of 40 to 45 minutes between Hazrat Nizamuddinand New Delhi. The distancebetween Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi is 7 kilometers. The time taken to travel between these two stationsis approximately 40 to 45 minutes due to not getting line clearance on time. There are heavy traffic of trains at New Delhirailway station. Nizamuddin railway station lies on New Delhi - Mumbai mainline and New Delhi - Bhopal section. All south going Rajdhani Express passes via Kota and Jhansi, based on thedestination point of Rajdhani Express. Kota falls between New Delhi and Mumbaiwhereas Jhansi falls between New Delhi and Bhopal. The Thiruvananthapuram and Madgaon Rajdhani Express passes via Kota totheir destination station. The Chennai, Bangalore and Secunderabad Rajdhani Express passes viaJhansi to their destination station. Not only Rajdhani Express, all other superfast and mail express trainsrunning between Delhi and South cities departs from Hazrat Nizamuddin likeDakshin Express, Mangala Lakshadweep Express, Kongu Express, ThirukkuralExpress etc. Out of 7 pairs of Rajdhani Express, 2 pairs of Rajdhani Express goes toMumbai from Hazrat Nizamuddin. Both Rajdhani Express for Mumbai travels viadifferent routes from Hazrat Nizamuddin. The August Kranti Rajdhani Express (12953/54) passes via Kota whereas theCSMT Rajdhani Express (22221/22) passes via Jhansi. The CSMT Rajdhani Express runs with push-pull method which means twoWAP-7 locomotives of KYN shed are attached to haul the train. Hope you areclear now !!! My note- If my memory iscorrect, GT to Chennai start from New Delhi station Q10 Japan is one of the most advanced countries in theworld, yet its currency (yen) value is less than other countries. Why? A10 Tomaž Vargazon Practicingatheist Thu The numerical value of acurrency is irrelevant and not connected to economic strength. Italian Lira For quite a while, Italian Lira was the currency with the lowestdenomination in the world, but Italy was prospering at the time. It was a majoreconomic power of Europe, but had the lowest valued single unit of currency. You couldn’t find 1 lira coinsand 1000 lira got you maybe a coffee from a machine (~50 euro cents afterconversion), but scarcely much more. Yen follows a similar logic.Japanese have decided they wanta currency with low nominal value and like it that way. There isn’t anythingwrong with that choice, although speaking as someone who lived with both a lowdenomination currency (SIT) and a high denomination currency (EUR), I like thelatter better. There arefewer issues with change if you’re paying small amounts in cash and you don’tdrown in all the zeroes when making large purchases. The difference is quite minimal and hardly affects the economy though. All the above QA are from Quora website on 18-04- 2022. Quora answers need not be 100%correct answers Compiled and posted by R.
