CULTURAL QA04-2022-21 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Unlikethe earlier generations, where couples would happily have many children, thoughonly husband would be the only earning member, why do many of present daygeneration avoid having children, inspite of both the spouses earning goodsalaries? A1 Ratnamala Kamath M'com from Karnatak University, Dharwad(Graduated 1988)Sun Most women of the earlier generations were uneducated and had no accessto family planning. Ihave heard of many women in our family who died in childbirth and theirhusbands married again a second time. My own great grandfathermarried 3 times after the death of his wives. Not all women were happy tohave more children. It was just that they had no choice. An aged lady relative told me that after 5 kids she was advised by herdoctor brother to undergo a family planning operation as their financialcondition was not good. Her husband refused to undergo one and also forbade herfrom undergoing it. Herhusband’s contention was that children are God's gift and they shouldn't stopchildren from beingborn. Being uneducated, scared and under the control of her husbandshe couldn't do anything about it. Though she didn't want more kids she had nochoice. There are many women like this who lacked the independence to make achoice about their own body. Also most couples in the olden days rarely bothered or took much interestin educating their kids. I heard of an incident in which one father of 10+kids, didn't even recognize or know his own sons name when he met him in apark. Today's couple are morecommitted and take interest in their children's education and career. They want to give them the best of everything. Theydon't want their children to be left behind in any field. The cost of children’supbringing and education has sky rocketed today. Consequently couples thinkmany times before going in for kids. Also in the olden days the health of people was robust as there was no pollution. Todaypollution and chemicals are in the air we breathe, water we drink and the foodwe eat. As a result the health of people is not as robust as it was in theolden days. Also the cost of living and education is such that both coupleshave to work today to have a comfortable lifestyle. When both are workingtaking care of kids becomes a problem. Many couples feel that having no kids isbetter than having and neglecting the kid. Today the times are uncertain. So a woman needs togive as much importance to her career as the man. If she dumps her career for a kid and later on her husband dumps her foranother woman or becomes abusive, then she will have nothing to fall back on orsupport herself. This makes a woman think many times before going in forpregnancy and childbirth. Many couples today don't want to bring another child in this worldbecause of various reasons. Today's woman has a choice, at least the urban, educated, independent ones, while the older women did not have one. These I feel are some of the reasons why Today's couples avoid or thinkhundred times before having children. My note- The increasingpopulation was a big challenge on Government. Government desired family planning . People cooperated because of theliving condition. Present livingcondition and facilities one cannot compare to the one before 7-8 decades.Present standard of living is good even among lower strata of people with freefood items, construction of residences for them etc by Government. Q2 Doyou believe that there were ancient civilizations on Earth that were moreadvanced than our present day technological achievements? What are yourtheories? A2 Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Sat No. Therehave been cases where civilisations were slightly more advanced than the onesthat replaced them, but not to that extent. For example Roman hypocaustswere replaced by Saxon open fires, but hypocausts weren’t as sophisticated asmodern central heating. The late Mediaeval monastic hospital at Soutra Aisle inthe Scottish Borders had very sophisticated medicines, including a generalanaesthetic, which weren’t achieved again elsewhere in Europe for nearly 400years, but they still weren’t as sophisticated as what we have now. I can only think of twoexceptions, both quite specific. There was a town in Mediaeval France which was destroyed during a war, and which hadglassware-making techniques we still can’t replicate (I’ve forgotten exactlywhat but it was to do with the finish and lustre of the glass); and thecivilisation that lived along the shores of the Amazon until they weredestroyed by European diseases had very superior soil-conditioning techniqueswhich, again, we still can’t replicate, and which produced huge crop yields fromsmall areas of land. Q3 Whatwould cause a split system air conditioner to leak water? How do you fix it? A3 Vivek Ravindranath,Efficient and Effective cooling enthusiastAnswered May 6, 2016 Actually there is no water in the split Ac system. The water is producedin the internal unit because the cooling of air causes the water present in theair to condense into small water droplets (similar to water condensing on acold bottle) This water is then drained out through the drain pipe, which in a splitac is dusted out along with the power wires and the copper tubing. Thus if the drainage system is faulty or blocked, water collects in theinner unit and starts flowing and leaking out... 2ND ANSWER- GabrielGilmore, lives in IdahoAnswered Dec 16, 2017 Air conditioners that aredripping or leaking water indicate a problem that can have different origins. In this article we will help you identify thecauses of dripping water from your air conditioner Bad installation If your device has been installed recently and drips water from the firstdays of use, you can be sure that it is a failure in the installation service. The most common faults are: Usetubing with a smaller diameter than specified by the manufacturer, interconnect various equipment in the same tubing, uncapped or strangled hosesand still attach the crooked evaporator to the wall. In this case, the best wayto solve the problem is to re-install the equipment. Burned or clogged drain pump Drain pumps are used in cases where it is not possible to have a neardrain point. However, these pumps need regular cleaning and maintenance. A clogged or burnt drain pump causes water to leak into theair conditioner. Clogged drain pipe The drain pipe clogs from time to time due to dirt, moss, mud that formsinside it. If your device never dripped water and only started now this is themost likely cause. Thebest way to solve this is by cleaning the appliance and the drainage system. Dirty air conditioning The lack of clean air conditioning is the number one cause of water leaksin air conditioning. Dirt accumulated inside theappliance and in the condensate tray blocks the passage of water to thedrainage system and thus the water leakage in the air conditioner occurs. Other causes There are also other possibilities, which are not the most common, suchas: deregulated apparatus, sudden change oftemperature in the environment and so on. How to solve the water leak? If your device was recently installed, it is a failure in theinstallation and the best way to resolve it is to contact the person who didthe installation and ask for the repair. If your appliance has been used formore than 3 years and there is never any dripping water there is a lack ofcleaning of the appliance and drainage system. The best way to solve it is to hire a specialized serviceand schedule the cleaning at least once a year. 3rd answer Busy BeaverAnswered May 8, 2016 Difficult question to answer with such little information. Here's whatyou should do: 1. Check your filter. A dirty filter will result in poor airflow causing thecoil to ice up. As the ice melts, it can leak water into your furnace/airhandler. 2. Make sure drain isn'tclogged. A clogged drain willprevent water from flowing out of the evaporator coil drain pan, thus backingup and spilling over. You can attach a wet vacuum to the end of the drain andtry sucking out the clog if that's the issue. 3. If all else fails, call apro. They have the properequipment/tools/experience needed to fix your leak. The typical homeownersimply isn't capable diagnosing and fixing the myriad of other possibilitiescausing your leak. Good luck my friend. My note- 2nd and 3rdanswers are to the point. Sometimes a liquidlike water falls down from the AC indoor unit on the ground of the room. I have seen this when temperaturesetting is 18-20 degrees and no dripping when temperature is set to 24 degreeupwards in the new split AC unit. It was an NFF by technician in my home. Q4 Whatis the food containing the highest amount and variety of nutrients? A4 Lucia Garcia Worked atHospitals Sun According to the BBC, British scientists have selected 100 of the world's most nutritiousfoods after analyzing and studying 1,000 foods. British scientists analyze and evaluate these more than 1,000 foods, andthen rank them according to their scores. The higher the score, thehigher the nutritional value and the most beneficial to human health. Almonds scored 97 points, toppedthe list of 1000 foods asthe most nutritious food in the world. The top 10 most nutritious foods ranked in order: almonds, cherimoya, ocean perch, flatfish, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, swiss chard, pork fat, beet greens, snapper. Almonds are extremely nutritious, 100 grams of almonds contain 25 gramsof protein, 27 grams of fat, and 14 grams of carbohydrates. In addition, almonds also contain vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin E,vitamin B5, vitamin C, and minerals such as potassium, sodium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, and phosphorus. Most of the fats in almonds areunsaturated fatty acids, which can protect the health of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular. Compared to milk, almonds contain3 times more calcium and 4 times more potassium than milk. Almonds are an excellent source of vitamin E, 100 grams of almonds containabout 25 mg of vitamin E. Vitamin E is one of the natural antioxidants, which can scavenge harmfulfree radicals and delay the aging process of the human body. It is said that the inhabitantsof the Himalayas often eat almonds, and their average life expectancy is ashigh as 90 to 100 years. Q5 Wouldhumans need to survive past a few million years for them to eventuallypotentially evolve beyond recognition? A5 Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Mon Oh, *way* past. We’re still fairly recognisably the same kind ofthing as the first members of the human line 7 million years ago, at the point where we split from the line leading to chimps, and we’ve insulated ourselves against most selection pressures now so we evolvemore slowly. To get “beyond recognition” I’d say you’re looking at atleast20 million years and probably more like 100 million, depending on yourdefinition of “recognition”. Q6 Whateffects can a power surge have on a laptop? A6 Gopala Krishnan ,former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom(1966-2004)Answered just now I was using an old laptop about six years old with a USB multiple unit .It’s LED display had gone , still working. For mybad luck, one day suddenly the USB multiple unit developed some fault. and inthe motherboard a part got defective. I could notget spare part and the Laptop become not usable. If a defective USB problem can make mother board not working, one can think of power surge by sudden heavy lightning.During power surge the step down power block can send momentary high currentand any part can becomedefective, most affected is mother board. Whatever is the emergency, it isbest not to use laptop during lightning. Q7 Howdo I decide the best kitchen sink? A7 Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now I was under the impression ceramic sinks are best since I was using the same for 13years at Trivandrum in my departmentalresidence. Normally ceramic wash basins are only used. But when I constructed my new home in Chennai, the builder provided quality stainless steel sink inkitchen and work area. For last 16 years I am using stainless steelsink, it still looks shining and perfectly working.Daily cleaning inside and monthly cleaning outside is done for the sink.It is best to have a sink with an extension to keep washed vessels if possible. Q8 Doesa person's immune system also play a role in healing cuts? A8 Ken Saladin Author, Anatomy & Physiology—The Unity ofForm and Function Apr 9 Very much so—particularly if wetake the broad view of “immune system” to include innate immunity as well as adaptive immunity (detailedlater*). Some of the white blood cells and their derivatives are parts of theinnate immune system, including neutrophils and macrophages. When you cut yourself, neutrophils are the “first responders” that migrate from the blood stream tothe site of injury, home in on bacteria and other foreign matter introduced by the cut, and onchemical signals released from the injured or destroyed tissue cells. Theydestroy bacteria and prevent or control the spread of infection. Blood-bornemonocytes enter the tissue more slowly and transform into macrophages, whichclean up tissue debris and dead neutrophils. Some of the chemicals (cytokines) released from damaged cells also dilatelocal blood vessels—hence the reddening around a cut or scratch—which hastensthe delivery of antibodies to the site. Antibodies are agents of adaptiveimmunity and further limit infection and help the cut to heal faster. *Note on innate v. adaptiveimmunity: Innate immunity includes mechanisms of disease resistance that arenonspecific, don’t require an antigen exposure, and have no immune memory—skinand mucous membranes, fever, inflammation, and various antimicrobial chemicals.Adaptive immunity is that which develops in response to a specific antigen, reacts selectively against that one or very similar antigens, and remembers theexperience so it reacts more quickly the next time. Antibodies and immunelymphocytes (T cells and B cells) are agents of adaptive immunity and immunememory. Q9 Weknow that smoke kills bacteria in food, but what is the bacteria killingingredient in it? What is contained in smoke that makes it kill germs? A9 Martin Bayer Chef(1994–present)Apr 14 Smoking foods as a preservation technique is donemainly to remove moisture. Bacteria needs moisture to thrive and reducing thewater activity level of foods inhibits bacterial growth. Smoke is acidic, so it lowers the Ph level of the food’s surface, whichalso inhibits bacterial growth. Q10 Whyis it that we would not use a flask for holding cold water once it has beenused for hot water? A10 Gopala Krishnan, formerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom(1966-2004)Answered just now You have mentioned hotwater and not hot liquid drinks like tea, coffee etc. If used fortea, coffee etc some smell can remain even with best cleaning. With hot waternothing like that. Athermo flask is used to keep things hot for a few hours and cold things coldfor a few hours. However separate flasksare used to avoid different smells affecting the contents. All the above QA are from Quora website on 20-04- 2022.
