CULTURAL QA 04-2022-23 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 How do I fix a powerissue (top/front loading washing machine)? A1 Gopala Krishnan ,former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now What is the power issue? If it is in the washing machine, it is best to call the companytechnician, He will have spares to replace. What you can do is tocall the company. They will charge for parts and visiting charges. If necessarythey will take your washing machine to service centre. It is best not to touch the wetwashing machine electrical points and get FATAL shock. The electricalpoints in many parts are not clearly visible in a washing machine. Q2 In evolution, whatcame first, the male or female, and how did they evolve at the same time? A2 Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper17h We don’t know which came first, because those sort of soft body parts tend not tofossilise. But we know that early/simple animalswhich have sexual reproduction are often hermaphrodite. So, to getto fixed genders you start with a hermaphrodite population and then someindividuals begin to specialise in being one sex or the other (assuming mostsexed individuals fall into male or female and not one of the more unusualoptions). It doesn’t matter which comesfirst, because whichever sex comes first, those individuals initially justbreed with the hermaphrodite majority. If having a fixed sex proves to be an advantage, eventually you’ll getindividuals specialising in being the other sex, and the trait will slowlyspread until being hermaphrodite becomes a rare variant, instead of the norm. Q3 Are bananas bad forthe pancreas because of the sugar? A3 Ken Saladin Textbookauthor and professor emeritus21h Sugar is not bad for the pancreas, and contrary topopular belief, sugar doesn’t cause diabetes—at least not directly, although excess intake causes obesity, which thencan cause type 2 diabetes. But sugar is not a cause of type 1 diabetes. The confusion comes because people who do have diabetes mellitus (DM)need to restrict sugar intake. That’s not because it harms the pancreas but because it harms the restof the body when the pancreas can’t respond with normal insulin output(type 1 DM), or other cells like fat and muscle cells are unresponsive toinsulin (type 2 DM). Q4 Why are there no fasttrains between Bangalore and Mumbai? The average time is 24 hours. The busesreach in 18 hours. When will this corridor be made fast? A4 Vijay Srini Lives inBengaluru, Karnataka, India Mon I am answering this question in April 2022, and I think it should bethere now because: Most of the route is doublednow, barring small stretcheswhich is single line. The route isfully electrified now. LHB Coaches arebeing used instead of ICF Coaches. Karnataka Express has slashedits timings by 1 and halfhours, now it is time for Udyan Express to follow suit. The timing should be slashed from 24 hours to 18 hours. Currently, buses take less time because the route ismuch shorter.I also travelled from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad (viaMumbai) some time back, and it took 18 hours. And the bus was not going toofast as well (probably max speed of 80 kmph). Q5 How often should youclean a kitchen exhaust fan? A5 Gopala Krishnan ,former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom(1966-2004)Answered just now Most new homes have chimney. Some old constructions have exhaust fans.Once you fry something and smell remains with in kitchen, it is high time toclean exhaust fan/fans. Thoughthere is a net inside, still some rodents may enter. If the net isclose, smoke will not go effectively. You may findthe wings of fan messy, cobwebs hanging, if not cleaned periodically. Kindly note- The exhaust fan is at height and it is best to call atechnician who will attend to defects if any. It is best to install a chimney if possible. Q6 Why didn't an urban,state-like civilization develop in the Americas around the Mississippi andAmazon Rivers? A6 Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper22h When the first white explorers reached the Amazon, it was as busy as theThames or the Rhine, with landing stages all along the shores connected byroads to hundreds or thousands of villages, and boats plying up and down. Whenthe next wave of explorers arrived, 40 years later, the peoplewere all gone, killed by the European diseases unknowingly introduced by theprevious lot. Q7 How does cellularrespiration benefit plants? A7 Kabir, BusinessConsultant (2018–present)53m The process of cellularrespiration allows plants to break down glucose into ATP. The ATP provides the energy they need to carry outvarious functions. Although plants use photosynthesis toproduce glucose, they use cellular respiration to release energy from theglucose. Q8 Why is oxidization incells in the human body bad? A8 Ken Saladin Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Mon Oxidation is a nonstop andcontinual process in the body’s cells. It’s how we extract usable energy from carbohydrates, fats, and otherfuels. Withoutoxidation reactions, one dies immediately for lack of the chemical energy tokeep the heart beating and the brain working. Paradoxical as it might seem, all body-building reactions, like buildingprotein, also require oxidation. Reactions that build up larger, moreenergy-rich molecules from smaller, lower-energy ones are called reductionreactions, but every reduction reaction has to be coupled to an oxidationreaction. Jointly, we call these oxidation-reduction reactions, or redoxreactions for short. Every metabolic reaction entails transferring electronsfrom one molecule to another. The molecule they’re taken away from is oxidized;the one they’re transferred to is reduced. So you should move beyond the idea that oxidation is bad. No oxidationmeans no metabolism, no life. Simple as that. On the other hand, oxidation also can be destructive and it’sone of the key factors in the aging of our tissues. It’s not that oxidationis bad in itself—it’s a matter of what’s being oxidized. Oxidation of the elasticprotein in the arteries is the key cause of arteriosclerosis, or stiffening ofthe arteries that advances with age. Oxidation of the lipids that make up cellmembranes weakens and destroys cells. Arthritis stems from oxidative damage tothe joints, cataracts from oxidation of the eyes’ lenses, and weakening of agedhearts from oxidative damage to the cardiac muscle. Among the most significant oxidizing agents in the body are highlyreactive atomic particles called free radicals, such as the superoxide anion. Some free radicals come from the things we take into the body in forms asdiverse as red wine, tobacco smoke, and meat preservatives. Most, however, areproduced by one’s own body, especially as by-products of ATP synthesis in themitochondria. Because of the destructive effects of free radicals and unwantedoxidation, and because we can’t prevent even our own cells from producing them, the body has natural mechanisms for counteracting them and minimizing thedamage. We produce internal (endogenous) antioxidants such as glutathione andsuperoxide dismutase (SOD). We also supplement these with dietary antioxidantssuch as ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and selenium. People on selenium-deficientdiets—such as people who grow much of their own food but whose local soil islow in selenium—suffer significantly higher rates of heart attack because ofthe loss of that protective effect. (This has been a problem in my state amongimpoverished people in rural southeast Georgia.) Public awareness of freeradicals and antioxidants has risen dramatically in recent decades, giving rise to a thriving industry (mostly bogus andexploitative) in antioxidant dietary supplements. Unfortunately, it has alsogiven rise to exaggerated and distorted perception of what oxidation is, suchas the impression that oxidation is bad. Q9 How does a single zooelephant survive without getting too sad? A9 Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Tue They need a lot of stimulationfrom their human keepers. There’s a zoo in the US where the keepers take anelephant for a walk round the zoo every night so she can look at the otheranimals, and another - ormaybe it’s the same one - which has built a giant mouth-organ into the side ofthe elephant enclosure. Butthey should never be on their own unless it’s unavoidable, e.g. medicalquarantine. Q10 Did saloons in the oldWest really have double swinging doors, like in the movies? A10 Jon Mixon Well over13,000 movies by now. Mon They are called “batwing doors”, questioner, and some of thehigher-end establishments had them as an inner secondary door for patrons whoentered. They were never the primary entrance as shown in bad Westernfilms and television series as the presence of horses and unpaved streets meantthat flies and other pests could enter the business unless there were actuallydoors that opened and closed. Additionally as anyone who hasever lived in the West or Midwest can tell you, the weather is rarely conduciveto allowing doorways to be wide open. Unless it was oppressively hot (and then most people would be at homeand not in a saloon anyway) the doors remained closed, but unlocked, duringbusiness hours. Q11 Why is my kitchen exhaustfan not working? A11 Gopala Krishnan ,former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now There can be many reasons. 1.Loose connection in switch orin the fan. 2. Faulty switch 3. Exhaust fan motor coil is break/ weak. 4. Messywings not moving because no service is done. 5. Some birds struck up betweenblades. Call an electrician. If motor coil is break, you can rewind. If it isan old fan, you can purchase and fit a new fan. Recently my sump motor became faulty and on test found coil break. Rewinding cost was 2000–00 and new motor cost was 35000. My old motor was 3 yearsold. I preferred new motor. So better install a new exhaustfan calling technician to do the work. Q12 What happens to earthernpots when ice cubes are poured in it? A12 Lake Kubilius, Ph.D. inChemical Engineering Answered Nov 18, 2015 ...is there something wrong with the earthen pots? If they're in good condition, not much willhappen. They will then contain ice. The ice will gradually melt into water. If you're talking about pouring ice into a pot being used to keep watercool via evaporative cooling, the answer is the same. However, in this case,I'd say that you're wasting the ice. Dumping the ice straight in the evaporative cooling potwill change the direction of the heat transfer. Since the pot is nowfar cooler than the room, heat will start moving INTO the water, not out. Thatsaid, it'd make more sense just to add ice directly to your drink. But if youhappen to have too much ice and nothing better to do with it, you may as wellput it in there.
