Q1 Does  Vishnu is anAditya? Where do we have Vishnu sahasra namam?

A1  Vedas mention 33dieties- eight vasus, eleven Rudras, twelve Adityas, Indra
and Prajapathi.

All these came from Hiranyagarbha. Adithi, Ushas and a fewother female deities
also find a place.

Surprisingly, anger, belief and such other feelings andeven a grinding stone
are deified.

The twelve Adityas include Mitra, Savitr, Aryaman, Daksha,Bhaga, Amsha,
Twashtra, Pooshan, Shaktra, Vyvaswatha and VISHNU.

These are the 12 spokes of the wheel of time (Kaalachakra).

Thus Vishnu was a minor deity representing one aspect ofSUN. By about second
century BC,Narayana of the Dravidic origin got added to Vishnu.

Almost at the same time, the name Krishna wasalso added to this. The devotees
of this deity were called Bhagavathas orvaishnavas. By 6th century, a few
Vaishnava scriptures includingBhagavathapurana came into existence. By about
12th century this startedgrowing fast and by 17th century, it reached its
climax.

Vishnu literally means one who pervades everywhere. He is predominantly satvik
and is responsiblefor preservation. To protect Dharma and to punish Adharma, he
takesincarnations- -Matsya (fish), Koorma (tortoise), Varaha (pig), Nrsimha
(manlion), Vamana  (dwarf), Parashurama, sreeRama, sree Krishna and finally
Kalki (yet to come).

Some people add Balarama also to this list.  It may be observed that this
tallies with theDarwinian theory of evolution.

The thousand names of Vishnu are found in Padma purana, but the one found in
the Anushasana parva ofMahabharatha is more popular.

Sree Shankara says, " Vishnu sahasranama is easy to practice, yieldshappiness
and several benefits.

(SAKALA PURUSHARTA SADHANAM, SUKHA SAMPADYAM, ALPAPRAYASAM, ANALPA PHALAM.). He
also says that the sahasranama should be sungalong with Bhagavad-Gita (GEYAM
GEETA NAMA SAHASRAM).

In order to impress that God is one, this sahasranamacontains names of Shiva,
Skanda, Ganesha, Soorya, Agni etc., Not only these, but even Rishabha,Vardhamana
etc. are also mentioned.

Some fifteen great teachers have written explanatory notes(Bhashyas).
Ramanujacharya says that the names represent different aspects ofAlmighty and
that  there is connectivityand continuity in the meanings. Madhvacharya asserts
that Mahabharatharepresents the essence of all shastras and Bhagavad-Gita and
Vishnu sahasranamaare the essence of Mahabharatha.

Q5 Can you give some interesting information about Karthikamasam or Kartik
month ?

A5  Karthika masam orKartik month- is the most auspicious month amongst all 12
Hindu months. According to Hindus, pujas, rituals, Kartik monthgive them great
pleasure and happiness in life because this is the mostfavorite month for both
of the Supreme Gods Lord Vishnu and Shiva. They believe that praying to Lord
during Kartikmaas fetches them Moksha (salvation).

The pujas, all other rituals, rules and code during themonth are called as
Kartika Masa Vratam. There are certain rules and codes toperform Kartika Masa
vrata. The Karthika Purana details the rituals and customsto be performed
during the month of Karthik. Various Hindu sacred texts havementioned the list
of basic rituals and customs of Kartika masam Kartik is theholiest month in the
Hindu lunar calendar. It usually overlaps with the monthsOctober & November in
the English calendar. Kartik Maas is described in thescriptures as the best
among months for performing austerities.

Sutaji said to the great sages: "The sin-destroying month of Kartik is said to
be endowedwith divine influence. It is ever so dear to Lord Vishnu and is the
bestower ofboth worldly pleasures and moksha (salvation)."

The rituals associated with the Kartik month are asfollows:

-Japa- - chanting the holy names of the Lord. As per our scriptures, if
somebody performs evena little worship of Lord Shri Hari in this month, He
offers that devotee Hisown abode.

-Deep Daan (offering lamps)- - Worship the Lord by offering lamps (diyas),
flowers, incense, food, etc. Lighting a diya before the Lord is called as
"deep-daan"and affords immense religious merits when performed during the
Kartik month.

In the Padma Purana, Kartik Mahatmya, there is a veryfamous story of a mouse.

In a temple of Lord Vishnu, there was a mouse who used toeat the ghee from the
extinguished ghee lamps which had been offered bydevotees to Him. One day when
she felt hungry to eat ghee, she tried to eat theghee from a lamp which was not
yet extinguished. While eating ghee from thelamp, the cotton wick got stuck in
her teeth. Since the ghee wick had a flame, the mouse started jumping in front
of the Lords Deity form and thus died due tofire. But Lord Sri Vishnu accepted
the jumping of that mouse with a lit gheewick in her mouth as His aarti. In
theend, He gave her liberation, the highest destination.

If somebody burns a lamp in the temple of Lord Shri Harieven for a short time
(in the month of Kartik), then whatever sins, he hasacquired for millions of
kalpas (one kalpa equals 1000 yugas) are alldestroyed."Of all gifts, the gift
of a lamp during the month of Kartik isthe best. No gift is its equal."

The Pushkar Puran states, "The person who lights the lamp of sesame (til) oil
in the name of LordShri Hari in the month of Kartik (during Sandhya) gets
unlimited prosperity,beauty, blessedness and wealth."

Brahmacharya - During Kartik month, one should refrain from indulging in sex
and shouldpractice Brahmacharya.

Worship of Tulsi Devi in Kartik is the bestower of innumerable virtues. As per
our scriptures, thereligious merits obtained from bathing at Prayag, death in
Kashi, and study ofthe scriptures are acquired simply through the worship of
the Tulsi plant. During Kartik month, one should specially light a diya near
the Tulsiplant. Applying tilak on the forehead using Tulsi jis mitti (sand) in
Kartikbestows good fortune (saubhagya).

Give Charity (daan) -Perform austerities - Lord Shiva said to His son
Kartikeyaji, "Dearson! One who takes a bath before sunrise in the month of
Kartik is absolved ofall sins." A bath during the Brahma-murat in this month at
home as wellaffords the same religious merits as bathing in holy places of
pilgrimage likeGangaji, Kashi, etc. By sleeping on the ground during Kartik,
one is entitledto the same religious merits as obtained by donating a piece of
land toBrahmins during the solar and lunar eclipses.
