KUNDRATHURMURUGAN TEMPLE-FORWARD

Dear friends,

It is the 3rd time I am visiting this temple. The temple ison a small hill top,
about 1 KM from Perumal temple at Kundrathur. I had mysister in law from home
in Kerala, and thought of making a family visit.

There are steps  aswell as a hill strip to reach the temple. Only one vehicle
can go through thehill strip, some points are widened to give way to  up-going
vehicles . About 15 cars can beparked on hill top. Vehiclecan reach in three
minutes the hill top temple.

There is a big idol in brass for which archana is done. Onehas to go sanctum
worshipping this idol. Within the sanctum Lord Muruga is instanding posture.
The idols of Valli and Deivayani  are installed in such a manner, either we can
see Muruga with Valli or Muruga with Deivayani, The priest explainedthis
peculiar  positioning to indicate, one wife at a time with God. The temple
closes by 8.30 PM and we were well in time by 7.30 PM.Aarathi is shown to both
deities. Kumkum and holy ash is given whileworshipping  in the first brass
deity ,only holy ash is given in sanctum where the idol of God is in granite.
For along time there was no archana and it was restarted on 15-6-22, the day of
ourvisit. We were fortunate to perform archana.

My wife had  visitedthe temple  with other  ladies , with pati padal(for each
step singingfame of Lord Muruga) and she was permitted to sing two stanzas, and
honouredwith a garland. I found a good write-up in Wikipedia and copied the
contents after a donation, whichwas requested by them.

1 Introduction

Kundrathur Murugan Temple is a Hindu temple located inKundrathur, a suburb of
Chennai in the Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Subramaniar (Murugan)stayed on the hill
duringhis travels from Tiruporur to Tiruttanigai. This place is also knownas
South Thanigai since Lord Subramaniar is standing facing the direction ofnorth,
facing Thanigai.

2 Architecture

This is the only Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu where the Godis standing in a
north facing direction. This temple was constructed by King Kulothunga Chola
II. Thespeciality of this temple is that Lord Subramaniar can be seen only with
oneGoddess at a time even though he is there along with both the Goddesses. If
theGod is viewed from one side he can be seen along with Goddess Valli and
viewedfrom the other side, he can be seen along with Goddess Deivayanai.[1]

There are 84 steps toreach this hill temple.

Vehicles (cars, bikes, autos) can also be driven up the hillright up to the
front of the temple on the hill, for those that cannot walk upthe 84 steps. The
temple is very close to the outer ring road for those thatneed faster
accessibility to the temple. Pallavaram to Kundrathur there are alot of buses
too but do not go all the way to the temple.

3 History

Once winning the demons in Thiruporur, Lord Muruga went toThirutani in a joyous
spirit. He placed a Siva Linga, performed pooja andmeditated deep. The temple
was subsequently constructed by the great Chola KingKulothunga Chola. LordSiva,
worshiped by Lord Muruga graces the worshipers in the name ofKandaleeswarar in
a separate shrine.

My note- Archana items areavailable in shops below the hill. On hill top we get
flowers, rarely  archana items.
