How many Brahmins are there in Tamil Nadu? I can come up with three vastly differing figures, based on different definitions. Option 1: A little over 72 millions. Because the Tamil masterpiece Thirukkural defines the brahmins as அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்கும் செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான். Former Chief Minister and the leader of DMK, late M.Krunanidhi provides the following meaning: அனைத்து உயிர்களிடத்திலும் அன்புகொண்டு அருள் பொழியும் சான்றோர் எவராயினும் அவர் அந்தணர் எனப்படுவார். In my opinion most of the people of Tamil Nadu, irrespective of their caste of birth or religious belief, qualify for this tag and therefore can be considered brahmins living in Tamil Nadu Option 2 : Not even a single person: According to the Dharma Shastras, brahmins are required to follow a rigid code of conducts in their day to day activities, and perform so many rituals enjoined upon them, and are also prohibited from doing the jobs earmarked for the other varnas like the kshatriya, vaishya and others. In today’s hectic life it is practically impossible for a brahmin to meticulously follow all or even most of these edicts, and therefore, other than due to the accident of birth, nobody can genuinely claim to be or considered a brahmin, and therefore there must not be even a single brahmin living in Tamil Nadu. Option 3 : Brahmins are said to constitute around 3% of the total population of Tamil Nadu. According to the caste wise survey in Tamil Nadu of 2011, Telugu brahmins and Tamil brahmins together constitute 3% of the total population. So probably around 2 to 2.5 million brahmins may be living in Tamil Nadu as per the census figures.
