Q3            What is the stringy part of a bananacalled?

A3            Lucia Garcia, Worked at Hospitals11h

Biologically, thestringy part of a banana is called the "phloem bundles," which
is responsiblefor transporting water, minerals, and nutrients to bananas.

When bananas areimmature, phloem bundles cling to the pulp. However, once the
banana is ripe, phloem bundles areseparated from the pulp.

Although phloembundles have a bland taste, phloem bundles are completely edible
without any sideeffects.

Like banana pulp, phloem bundles are nutritious and richin potassium,
magnesium, dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitaminB6, and more.

In fact, phloembundles are much higher in dietary fiber than pulp.

Eating some phloem bundles along with bananas is verybeneficial for digestive
health.

Q4            Can a sink drain connect to a toiletdrain before a toilet vent?

A4            Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004) Just now

I am living inChennai in an area, where kitchen cleaning waste water go to a
soak pit andtoilet waste is going to septic tank. Bath water goes to another
soak pit. Inhomes septic tank and other pipes SHOULD NOT be connected together.

When corporationdrains are run through centre of road in large pipes laid at 5
feet depth orso, as I understand separate pipes are laid from sock pits and
septic tanks andconnected to this main pipe. How the connection is made is not
clear to me.

Q5            What is the privilege of being aTamizhan on Quora?

A5            Gopalkrishna Vishwanath ,I have beena member of Quora since July
201521h

Absolutely none!

Balaji Viswanathan is the mostfollowed Quoran not because he is a Tamizhan but
because of the quality of hiscontributions over nearly a dozen years that he
has been active on Quora.

Kanthaswamy Balasubramaniamis currently the most viewed writer considering
monthly views and will soonovertake everyone else, not because he is a Tamizhan
but for the content he iscontributing. Some of his views on politics are not
palatable to a large numberof Quorans but they are all curious to read what he
has to say and his answersgo viral within minutes and he is perhaps the most
discussed Indian Quoran.

I myself have managed to bewell-liked by a large number of Quorans but that is
not due to my Tamilidentity. It is due to the way I have engaged with thousands
of Quorans bothpublicly and privately, on Quora and off Quora. I enjoy a
special advantage ofknowing Hindi and being able to write answers in Hindi and
that has brought mea large number of followers from the North India. They
follow me not because Iam a Tamizhan but because of my modern views on most
issues which are popularwith youngsters and which are unlike the usual views of
a typical Indianseptugenarian.

If any one canquote any example of how merely being a Tamizhan has earned him
any privilegeon Quora I would be curious to know what that privilege is.

By the way in caseyou are wondering what the word “Tamizhan” means, it is the
same is Tamilian. Tamizhan is the correct spellingof the popular word Tamilian,
that is a person who speaks Tamizh (Tamil) as hisnative language.

Most Indiansoutside Tamil Nadu and Kerala cannot pronounce “zh” correctly and
that is whythe wrong spellings (Tamil, and Tamilian) became popular and
replaced Tamizhand Tamizhan.

Q6            Why do we Hindus do ancestralprayers when the souls of our
ancestors have already taken on other lives?

A6            Rami Sivan, Priest, Dharma teacher, counsellor, Gov. Advisor
(1998–present)Jul 11

A very goodquestion. There are several layers of thought accumulated over
millennia.

Ancestor worship is a very ancient layer of belief commonamong most early
civilisations. It was believedthat the ancestors live in a spiritual realm
known as Pitri Loka and look downon their descendants and can benefit them for
good or bad, hence they need tobe propitiated and their good wishes invoked.

Later on, when themetaphysics of rebirth and Karma were consolidated, belief in
the Manes(Pitris) became antiquated and obsolete. But still the two layers of
belieffound an uneasy partnership. So today we hold with the doctrine of
rebirth and Karma but stillacknowledge the Manes - even though they have
already been reborn.

The Sraddha nowadays has taken on the form of a memorialservice in which the
memory of the deceased ishonoured.

Let us examine theHymn to the Manes in Rig Veda 10.15. The mantras from this
Sūkta are stillrecited in the Sraddha ceremonies.

Let the lower, letthe higher, let the middlemost Soma-loving Manes arise; let
those Manes who, friendly, knowing right, have gone to life eternal, favour us
in ourinvocations.

Let this ouradoration be made to-day to our predecessors, to those our
successors who havedeparted who have seated themselves in the astral realms or
who are now presentamong opulent people.

I have invoked theManes, who are well cognizant of my worship, the
infallibility, and theprogressive advance of this sacrifice; the Manes who sit
on the sacred grassfrequently coming hither shall partake of the pressed drink
with the offeringto the dead, come most gladly here.

You Manes that siton the strew come hither protect us who are in your presence;
these offerings we have made toyou; accept them; so come with most beneficent
protection; then bestow upon ushealth and happiness, and pardon from sin.

May the Pitaras whoare entitled to the Soma offering come hither, when invoked
by us, to the dearofferings placed upon the strew; let them come; let them
listen here to ourhymns; let them speak for us; let them protect us.

Bending the knee, sitting down to the south do you all greet favorably this
sacrifice; injure usnot, O Manes, by reason of any offence that we may have
committed against youthrough human frailty.

Sitting inproximity to the radiant flames of the altar, bestow wealth on the
worshippingmortal. To your sons, O Fathers, present a share of those riches; so
do youhere bestow strength.

May Yama, being propitiated, desirous of the offering, partake at pleasure of
the oblations along with thoseour ancient progenitors, the Saumyas, the
possessors of great spiritual wealth, who also desire it, and who convey the
Soma oblation to the devas and thepitaras in order.

Come O Agni to our presence with the Pitris, who are possessed of spiritual
wisdom, who have attained a seat in the assemblyof the devas, who thirst for
Soma, skilled in sacrifices, reciters of hymns,truth-speaking. seers,
frequenters of sacrifices.

Come O Agni with thousands of manes, of bothpast and future, frequenters of
sacrifices, eulogists of the gods, those whoare true, who are sustained by
oblations, and possess equality with Indra andthe devas.

You Fathers thathave been devoured by fire come hither; sit you down each on
his seat, you thathave good guidance; partake of the offerings proffered on the
strew; thenbestow wealth accompanied by strong sons.

You O Agni, havingbeen implored, O Source of the Vedas, have conveyed the
oblations, having madethem fragrant. You have presented them to the fathers;
with the funeraloffering they have eaten them; so you, O god do also partake of
the oblationsproffered.

Both the Fatherswho are here in this realm and who are not here in this world,
both those whomwe know and those whom we know not, you know how many they are O
Jatavedas;enjoy the sacrifice well prepared with funeral offerings.

The gentlereader will notice that the Manes (Pitris) are regarded as partners
with theGods (Devas) having the same powers. And there is no mention of rebirth.

Nowadays the vastmajority of Hindus do not practice Ancestor-worship - but may
only do tokenofferings as part of a memorial service after cremation for up to
a year.

My note- This is answer by a foreigner acceptedHinduism. This QA is included
just for information and not for discussions.

Q7            What kind of propane is used in homeair conditioners?

A7            Pete G,HVAC Contractor Jul 14

The propane used insome AC systems is ultrapurified for use as a refrigerant
gas. You wouldn’t use the stuffout of your grill. In the AC industry if you
needed propane based refrigerationgas you would ask for R-290 at the supplier.
As a professional in the AC industry, I have not yet seenpropane used in a
modern, whole home AC system. It is mostly used inrefrigeration appliances and
some RV style air conditioning systems.

Q8            What are some sad pictures of humansdestroying Mother Nature?

A8            Shaunak Bhattacharjeee, SoftwareEngineer | Traveller | Foodie Jul

There's a deserted factory just adjacent to our building. It used to be a
plastic factory back in the 1990s and ever since I gainedsense, I have always
seen the factory like this, left to crumble to the ground.

Recently, somebodypurchased this land and from what we learnt from the talk of
the town, an 18-storeyed building is plannedto be constructed at this spot
along with a shopping mall. Whilethat's exciting in one sense, I can only
imagine the damage this will cause to Mother Nature.

This was what thisplace used to look like. Due to storms, strong winds and
years of negligence, the buildings had started to crumble, the roofs had blown
off and tall grassesand trees had grown which usedto be the home to several
birds. This is nature at its best whenhumans do not interfere.

Unfortunately, yesterday, they started to clear the land and a portion of the
building at thefar end was also demolished.Today, I woke up to the sound of
several birdschirping. I never heard so many birds chirping at the same time. I
went to mybalcony to see all but one tree cut down.

A JCB was broughtto destroy the structures; notice how the building on the left
side in thefirst two pictures has been broken down to a pile of bricks only.
And there were so many birds flyingaround because their homes were lost — lost
forever! Compare thefirst picture with the third one and you'll see the drastic
difference betweenthe same place captured just a few days apart!

Q9            Where are proteins digested andabsorbed?

A9            Ken Saladin, Former professor ofhistology (microscopic
anatomy)Jul 15

Protein digestion begins in the stomach, but there’s noprotein (amino acid)
absorption there. Protein digestion is completed, and theamino acids are
absorbed, in the small intestine, especially the first two portions of
it—duodenum and jejunum. Nearly all aminoacid absorption occurs in the jejunum;
the process is nearly complete by the time the residuereaches the third
portion, the ileum.

Q10         Were European medieval (e.g. A.D. 1200)houses made of mud, poorly
built, misaligned, etc. like we see in the movies?

A10          Claire Jordan,Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Sun

Made of mud, sometimes - called cob.But plaster is just a refined mud, and
bricks are just fired mud. Misaligned, no. That’ssomething that happened later.
In areas where Mediaeval buildings werewood-framed, the surviving ones have
tended to warp a bit over the centuries.
