Sir

for those who are interested to learn:

*Bhūtasaṃkhyā system* is a method of recording numbers using ordinary words

having connotations of numerical values. The method was popular among
Indian

astronomers and mathematicians since ancient times. Sanskrit
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit> was the language

from which words were chosen to write numbers in the *bhūtasaṃkhyā*
system.

The system has been described as the "concrete number notation" for the

representation of numbers. The number "two" can be associated with the word

"eye" as every human being has two eyes. All words synonymous with "earth"

could be used to signify the number "one" as there is only one earth.
Concepts,

ideas, and objects from all facets of Indian cultural experience –
mythological,

puranic, literary, religious, etc. – were harvested to generate
number-connoting

words. As an illustration, every Sanskrit word indicating an "arrow" has
been

used to denote "five" as Kamadeva <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamadeva>,
the Hindu deity of love, is traditionally

depicted as a warrior carrying five arrows of flowers. The Sanskrit
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit> word

*anuṣṭubh* has been used to signify "eight" as it is the name of a meter
with

eight syllables in a foot. Any Sanskrit word for "tooth" could be used to
denote

32 as a grown-up man has a full set of 32 teeth. Terms implying "the gods"

were used to indicate 33 as it is believed that the number of *deva*s
(gods) is

 33 koti. Varamihirar used it.

KATAPAYA SYSTEM

*ka·ṭa·pa·yā·di** (**Devanagari* <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devanagari>
*: **कटपयादि**)** system* (also known as *Paralppēru*,

 Malayalam: പരല്‍പ്പേര്
<https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%AA%E0%B4%B0%E0%B4%B2%E0%B5%8D%E2%80%8D%E0%B4%AA%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%AA%E0%B5%87%E0%B4%B0%E0%B5%8D>)
of numerical notation is an

ancient <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient> Indian
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India> alpha-syllabic- numeral system
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphasyllabic_numeral_system> to depict
letters <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_(alphabet)> to numerals
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number>

for easy remembrance of numbers <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number> as
words <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Words> or verses
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verse_(poetry)>. Assigning more than

one letter to one numeral and nullifying certain other letters as
valueless,

this system provides the flexibility in forming meaningful words out of
numbers

which can be easily remembered. It was a spy code used which was used in
the

verses too by the scholars too.

   - 1 This verse encrypts the value of pi
   <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi> (π) up to 31 decimal places.

 गोपीभाग्यमधुव्रात-शृङ्गिशोदधिसन्धिग॥ खलजीवितखाताव गलहालारसंधर॥

   - 2 The melakarta <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melakarta> ragas
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragas> of the Carnatic music is named so
   that the first
   - two syllables of the name will give its number. This system is
   sometimes
   - called the Ka-ta-pa-ya-di sankhya

The Swaras <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swara> 'Sa' and 'Pa' are
   fixed, and
   - here is how to get the other swaras from the melakarta number.

1. Melakartas 1 through 36 have Ma1 and those from 37 through 72 have Ma2.

2. The other notes are derived by noting the (integral part of the)
quotient and

remainder when one less than the melakarta number is divided by 6. If the

melakarta number is greater than 36, subtract 36 from the melakarta number

before performing this step. ( refer to the book *The text of the *

*Chatur-dandi-prakashika)*

3 It is believed that *Aadi Shankaraa *was born on *panchami thithi *(day
based

on lunar calendar) in *Shukla paksham *in *Vaishaka maasam* (month)
under *Ardraa
*

*nakshatram* (star) in *Eswara *year (name of the year.)

Phonetically,* Shankaraacharya *word/name (nomenclature) is composed of the
five

phrases — *sham*, *ka*, *raa, chaa and rya*.

The *Katapayaadi* system of alpha-numerals affirms that: *sham* represents
five

(fifth) denoting the *panchami thithi*; *ka *represents one (first)
denoting

*shukla paksham*; *raa* represents two (second) denoting *Vaishaka masam*

(the second month); *chaa* represents six (sixth) denoting *Ardraa
(Thiruvathira) *

*nakshatram* (star); and *rya*, to be read as *yya*, represents eleven
(eleventh)

denoting *Eswara samvatsara*m (*Eswara* year) of the 60 years cycle. (*Rya* is
an

exception to the *Katapayaadi* system since *Katapayaadi* does not allow
for

 combined letters.)

4 The date of the birth of Sri Sankara according to these authorities is
given by

 this verse:

*tishyae prayaatya nalasaevadhi baaNanaetrae | yae naMdanae dinamaNaa
vudagadhvabhaaji | raadhae ditae ruDuvinirgatamangalagnae | syaahootavaan
Sivaguru@h sacha SaMkaraeti ||*

Anala=3. Sevadhi = 9, Bana = 5, Netra= 2, which comes to 2593rd year of
*Kali*
<https://www.booksfact.com/puranas/kali-yuga-timeline-started-on-24-january-3102-bce.html>,

which means or 509 BCE (3102 – 2593=509 BCE)
On Thursdday, Vaisakha Sukla Panchami in the constellation Arudra and Lagna
of

Dhanus in the year Nandana, a son was born to Sivaguru in Kaladi and he was

named ‘*Sankara*’ by his father in 2593 year of Kali Yuga.
Which dates back to *Adi Sankaracharya birth date being 9th April 509 BCE.*
Referring to the date of Sankaracharya’s Niryana, the Jina Vijaya (jain
saint) states :

*RShi rbaaNa stadhaa bhuumi rmartyaakshau vaamamaeLanaat| eakatveana
labheataankam taamraakshaa tatra vatsara@h|*

Rishi = 7. Bana = 5, Bhumi = 1 and Martyakshau = 2, in the reverse order
and

reckon the total number of years in the Yudhishtira Saka (of the Jains), we
arrive

at the year Tamraksha (Raktakshi) as the year of Sankara’s death.
Hence Sankara’s Niryana works out to 2157 + 468 = 2625 Kali or 3102 – 2625
= 47

7 BCE; (or 2634 BCE – 2157 = 477 BCE).
*Note :* The Jains and Buddhists use a Yudhishtira era which commences

 468 years after Kali i.e in (3102 BCE – 468 = 2634 BCE).
The Jinavijaya is a composition by a Jaina. It contains among other things a

brief account of the life of Kumarila Bhatta whom the Jains (who condemn
the

Vedic rituals) held as their bitterest opponent. Therein we find a
reference to the

meeting of Sankara with Kumarila just before the death of the latter.
There could be no partiality in the writer in favour of his opponents.

5 Dr. M. P. Chandrasekharan, who belongs to Kerala, was drawn to study

this ancient system that originated in the state. He shared his insights
with

first-year engineering students in the cultural education classes at the
Coimbatore

 campus on August 24.

In the Katapayadi system, several letters can be assigned the same number,

however not every letter is allotted a number.

“A beautiful example of this technique can be seen by looking at the last
line of

the final dasaka in the Narayaniyam: āyurārogyasaukhyam. It literally means

long-life, health and happiness, but by using the Katapayadi technique, the

word is converted into the number 1712210,” elaborated Chandrasekharan.

“In 1587 AD, when the Narayaniyam was written, this number represented the

number of days that had passed since the beginning of the Kali Yuga, per
the

Malayalam calendar,” he added.

Using his uncomplicated interactive style, Dr. M. P. Chandrasekharan made

it easy for students to understand and apply the Katapayadi system in
daily life.

For example, he explained how one could easily remember many phone

numbers by converting them into words or verses.
