CULTURAL QA 07-2022-24 BEING A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Whattype of doctor do medical students with poor grades become? A1 Abraham Sukumar, In medical servicein India for more than three decades Wed This answer is based on my experience in South India. The medicalprofession is a mosaic. There are general practitioners and there arespecialists, and there are subspecialists dealing with subspecialities withinthose specialties. Thenthere are pathologists who never see the sick but only bits and pieces of them. And there are microbiologists, and pharmacologists, and epidemiologists and soon. The list is lengthening as science advances. In the mosaic that is themedical profession these are the slots that must fill up to form the fullpicture. The brilliant, the not so brilliant, the dull, the topper, those thatcan eke out only poor grades, men, women, those that prefer seeing patients, those that prefer to work in labs, and so on and on all have a place. What type of slot does ourpoor grader occupy? My former chief DrSaratchandra was travelling by car from Madras to Salem when his car developeda rattle. He was passing through a small town from where a former student ofhis used to refer cases. Hethought it was a good idea to get that doctor to see to the car lest itbreakdown on the way. That former studenthad an illustrious career in his student days. He spent a long number of yearsin the college and finally qualified one subject at a time and that too withgenerous help from the examiners. The former student was overwhelmed to findhis professor at his doorstep. In no time at all mechanics were at his car. The professorwas surprised too to find his former student’s clinic crowded with patients. The student noted his professor’s surprise and almost apologetically explainedthat that town and thesurroundings were full of his community people and as he is the only doctorfrom that community, they come to him, and he treats those he can and refersthe rest to his colleagues. The doctor wasbeing modest. All the years he had spent as a medical student have not gonewaste. Medical education is a continuing process. This doctor has apparently moved far from his days as a lower grader. He musthave taken great strides for patients to crowd his clinic. Patients, wheretheir lives are concerned are apt to place self-interest above communityloyalty. Our low grader must have improved greatly. An anxious mother with awailing baby can spur a practitioner to improve himself in a manner that examiner’sthreat of failing one can never do. But he has done more. He has become a beacon for thepeople of that backward region. There were a few more from hisbackward community in medical colleges and many more in engineering colleges. He was not just a doctor but acommunity leader. We can now attemptto answer the question we had asked ourselves earlier. In the mosaic we havereferred to what slots does our poor grader occupy. If it is a picture of ahuman then one of the eyes I would say, nothing less. The grade a medical student receives at the time ofqualification is not important. What he does with it in the years ahead of himthat matters. Please note that in the professionof medicine a top specialist in the city sought after by VIPs is as importantas a doctor working in a dingy corner attending to the needs of illegal aliens. When selectingcandidates to medical colleges only students who have the capacity to managethat difficult course must be selected. Beyond that cut off the selectors mustrange widely. Top performers, candidates of grades below that, city-basedcandidates, candidates from rural areas, students from communities poorlyrepresented in the medical profession and so on must all be considered forselection. Only that way can all the slots in the mosaic referred to be filled. To skim off only the cream as has been suggested by some is a recipe fordisaster Q2 Whatcolor vegetable should you eat the most? A2 Lucia Garcia, Worked at Hospitals Wed There is no doubt that you should eat more green leafyvegetables, especially dark green ones. When scientistsstudy the nutritional content of vegetables, they found an interesting rule: the nutritional value ofvegetables is closely related to the color of vegetables. According to theorder of green, yellow, red, purple and white, the nutrient density ofvegetables decreases in turn, among which, dark greenvegetables have the highest nutritional value. Dark greenvegetables top the listoffive major food groups established by the USDA to promote healthy eating.TheWHO recommends that adults eat 300 to 500 grams of vegetables a day, of whichdark green vegetables should make up half. Dark greenvegetables are low in calories and high in fiber. Meanwhile, darkgreen vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, K, B vitamins, folicacid, and the minerals calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium. The best dark green vegetables include bok choy, broccoli, collard greens, kale, lettuces, spinach, swiss chard, dandeliongreens, mustard greens and more. Q3 Whatother race exists in the world apart from the human race? A3 Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Jul 17 “Race” in the non-sporting sense really justmeans “A group with something in common, usually including a genetic heritage”.When Darwin wrote about“favoured races”, for example, he was mainly thinking about different strainsof cabbage. If what you meanis, do other species have equivalents to human “races”, yes, although they’reproperly called ecotypes. North American opossums usually have whitefaces with a bit of grey on the back, and dark hands and feet with whitefingers and toes, but in some areas they have a dark cap coming right down theface, and dark fingers and toes. European hedgehogs living in Britain usually have achestnut-brown face with an inverted cream triangle between the eyes, and amostly brown body, but on the continent they are overall paler and usually havea pale face with just a brown muzzle, and those living in Scandinavia are muchbigger than the ones to the south. Q4 IsIndia changing? A4 Pritish Mehndiratta Updated 4y This incidenthappened a few days ago in the Delhi Metro. A person named Shubham Verma was travelling in the metrowhen he saw the clean and mopped floor getting filthy. A young boy, whowas sitting in front of him with plugged earphones was taking out his waterbottle from his bag when his tiffin box fell, and all his lunch spilled onto thefloor. The first thingthat Shubham thought was that this is how the Metro’s floor is going to stayall day now. But the boy’s next step left himawestruck. He tore out a page from one of his notebooks andpicked up all the food from the floor. Hey, wait, it’s not over as yet. He then took his handkerchief and wiped the floorclean, exactly as it was before the spillage. Our hero's name is Pranjal Dubey. In his Facebookpost, Verma wrote, “ The nation doesn’t need to spend crores on seminars forSwachh Bharat (Clean India Campaign) but youngsters, who pledge to keep their country green andclean, just like Dubey." >From reading thisincident, what I perceive is that there were two heroes. >Because this may havehappened every single day, with someone witnessing such >inspiring acts. But whogoes home, recalls what he/she saw, and then share the >same incident withothers? What we do chooseto recall is- “Oh, XYZ place was so dirty… The government is doing nothing…”Andso on, while somewhere forgetting our own responsibility. In the end, toanswer the question, I would hold my head high with pride and say- Of course, India is changing, and citizens likethem are the propagators of this change. Most young people want to become independent and want toprove everyone they are adults now. Most parents helptheir kids on finding a home, finding a job and becoming independent. Manyyoung people leave for universities and colleges. Some marry and some godirectly to work. Some leave for military. By demonstrating you are able to live independently fromyour parents, you demonstrate you are goodhusband or wife materiél. You can take responsibility and you prove you cantake care of your home and your family. My note- In India, children depend on parents till theybecome 30-40. Q6 Hasanyone noticed the lights on the Chennai to Chengalpattu local train switch offwhen it runs parallel to the highway after Tambaram station? Can anyone explainthis phenomenon? A6 Aravind Aarumugam,4y Have you seen smalltransformers and a room near a railway s station entrance along the tracks inbetween two stations ? Like this : These are known asa traction substations. These structures consist of transformers and powerswitching equipments which are used to transmit power to the overhead powerlines. The electricity from these substations are essentiallywhat power the traction motors of our EMU's. Coming to the point, the phenomenon youobserved happens when there is switching of substations , i.e, the zones uptowhich each substation provides electricity is limited by a radiussay 4–5 KM's , when the train shifts from one zoneto the other the EMU coach suffers a power loss and the electricity cuts off asthe train is travelling from one zone to the other.(basically thepoint when the switch is off ) Note 1 : This does not happen in regular longdistance railway coaches as they have auxillary power supply via batteries ,whereas EMU's are not equipped with batteries. Note 2 : The same phenomenon can be observedwhen travelling from Tambaram towards beach nearby Nugambakam. Apologies for anymistakes made above. Please correct me or add further details. Source : used to bea regular commuter and had wondered about the same. Q7 Whatis the difference between ceiling ducts and floor vents? Q8 Whyis 25°C colder in an air conditioner colder than 25 °C in outside weather? A8 Piyush Bhatnagar, Vish Mankotla, Maintenanceexperience of HVAC systems Tue 26°C, outside, (if it is the season to put the AC on),will also contain an amount of moisture. Hence'r’eal feel' temperature will be higher, and you are less comfortable, and youmay even sweat. But thesame 25C, in an AC room, the moisture is reduced, and the real feel temperaturewill be less, actually very near to 25C, and you are morecomfortable. Real feeltemperature is calculated based on actual temp, and humidity. 2ND ANSWER- Pathak BK,Former Director (1981–2013)Wed If you are insideroom chilled air is constantly touching the body and no physical exercise isthere ,and if you are outside and moving heat is generated with exercise ofyour body. 3RD ANSWER Venkateswara Swamy Swarna,FormerScientist, Metallurgist, Quality / NDT Manager at Department of Atomic Energy,India (1967–2008)Tue Human sensations depend on temperature, humidity and thevelocity of air flow. In still air outside, a small layer of air immediately in contact with thebody becomes warm and provides an invisible blanket. In a room with AC, that sort of air cushion blanketdoes not / cannot form Q9 Canyou use a portable air conditioner in an apartment? A9 Bob Washburn, Former Director ofFacilities at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1993–2013) Jul 18 Probably. If the apartmentis in an old building, there may be issues on enough capacity in the electricsystem. Portable AC units draw from 10 - 13 amps. As long as there is nothing else on the circuitthat should not be an issue in newer buildings, but older buildingswhere the system has not been upgraded may have circuits with lower capacityfuses. This assumes there is nothing in the rental/lease agreement banning them.
