CULTURAL QA 07-2022-27 BEING A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Is it true that the temperaturedisplayed on an air conditioner is not the actual temperature of the room? A1 Gaurav Raj Gupta, Studied MechanicalEngineering3y Yes. It is truethat temperature displayed on an air conditioner is not the actual temperatureof the room. Temperaturebeing displayed on an conditioner can be lower than, equal to or greater thanthe room temperature. To understandthis, let us first try to get an overview of how the air conditioner lowers theroom temperature. Function of an airconditioner is to maintain air quality inside a room. One of the parametersto be controlled is the room temperature. The temperature displayed on the airconditioner is the temperature of the room which the occupant desires. When the air conditioner isturned on, the blower starts followed by the compressor. The blowersucks in hot air from the room, passes it through the evaporator heat exchanger(maintained at a low temperature by compressor and allied components of thethermodynamic cycle) and dischargeschilled air in the room whose temperature is much lower than the room temperature. This chilled airthen interacts and exchanges heat with the hot room air and brings down its temperature. This cycle goes on untilthe temperature of the air being sucked in the air conditioning unit is lowerthan the set temperature. Once the air gets cooler than the desired temperature, itis detected by a thermostat which turns off the compressor. As a result thetemperature of the evaporator heat exchanger increases gradually. Due to thisthe air being discharged by the air conditioner is no longer chilled. As the temperature rises, thetemperature is again turned on to maintain the temperature, and the cyclerepeats. Let us now revisitthe three temperature scenarios discussed in the start of my answer. If the room temperature is lower than the settemperature, only the blower will run and compressor will be turned off. If the room temperature is equal to the desiredtemperature, again it will only be the blower which will be operating. If the roomtemperature is higher than the set temperature, both the blower and thecompressor will be on to bring the temperature to the desired level. My note- Ifone set a temperature at a lower unit when outside temperature is very high, the AC tries it’s best to provide a temperature maximum possible by it . Thereis an efficiency gradient which depend on the compressor age,and humidity of the room. Q2 What are the advantages of a diesellocomotive over an electric locomotive? A2 Indian Railways Space, Answered by SwagataSarkar Fri A diesel locomotiveand an electric locomotive are almost the same with one big difference, the process of power harnessing. While Electriclocomotives require an external source of power (OHE, power Rail, and Thirdrail) and power collection (Pantograph, collector Shoes). Operating Electriclocomotives require additional infrastructure and the establishment of powerstations, distribution grids, and manpower. Diesel locomotives, on the other hand, carry their ownsource of power. This point in itself allows the diesel locomotives to operate in places where the establishment of OHE(overhead equipment) is not possible. Diesel locomotivesare also mechanically less complex than their electric cousins Cheaper to operateon small-scale operations Cheaper/ easier tomaintain More efficientin hauling heavier loads: Diesel locomotivesdue to their nature of power delivery are very efficient in startingfreight/passenger trains. In the long run, this reduces the time oftravel/transport. the power delivery/initial traction is smoother. On the other hand, electric locomotives, the onesthat use Tap changers are especially smooth. They are known for their linearand uniform power and less to no jerks in operation, making them suitable forpassenger service Electriclocomotives are more efficient at high speeds. Instantaneous power delivery.Almost full power is available at all throttle ranges Better tolerancetowards climatic conditions (less prone to failures due to extreme heat andcold) Ease of operationdue to the nature of the locomotive. As we can see, there is no clear winner. Both locomotives are good in their own rights.Even though some of their jobs are interchangeable, some are best suited toonly one of them. Q3 What culture shocks can a North Indianface in South India? A3 Shubham Bhatt, Lives in India Sun I went to Kozhikodeand Wayanad in Kerala few months ago. In so many movies and web series I had seen cities ofKerala full of coconut trees (Kerala is alsocalled as land of coconut) so it was always in my mind to drink as much ascoconut water whenever I would go to Kerala. I used to thinkthat every street there must be full of those coconut water stall like we havesamosas and pani puri stall after every kilometers. When I entered Kozhikode, it was the same type of scenesI had seen in movies. City was really beautiful, full ofgreenery, coconut trees almost everywhere around. I went to Kozhikodebeach in the evening time. I enjoyed a lot there too. After few minutes I startedsearching for coconut water stall to fulfil my wish. I couldn't find any. Later next day tooI was roaming on streets, went to several places in both Kozhikode and Wayanadbut could find coconutwater stall only at limited places and that too at same rate as in North.(Earlier I had thought it would be of low cost due to more production there) I asked my cabdriver the reason for this and he replied 'Sir most of us have already coconuttrees at our home so why someone will drink coconut water from stall hererather drink from own tree.’ It was a shock forme but that seemed logical, reasonable and fair. At last he took me to placewhere I drank back to back 2 coconut water. Later I saw more places in the cityand around and it was really beautiful. My note- Comparing to Kerala, Karnataka andTamilnadu have more coconut trees. 90% or more of processed huskrequired in Alleppy coir factories isobtained from Karnataka now. Q4 What foods have antioxidant? A4 Luisa Fanzani, Cosmetic Chemist,Featured in Netflix documentary "Broken". Updated 20h I like this question!Eating antioxidants richfoods is always a great idea. Here is a list offoods that contain antioxidants: Black grapes contain resveratrol. Resveratrolmodulates inflammation and fights oxidative stress through SIRT-1 activation.SIRT-1 is an enzyme that has been linked to DNA repair, oxidative stress response, mitochondrial function, and biogenesis. Red chili, citrus fruits, potatoes and berries containvitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen and is alsoone of the best anti oxidants in skincare. Even though berries are not thefirst food that comes to mind when we think of vitamin C, did you know thatounce for ounce strawberries actually provide more vitamin C than oranges? Onemore reason to love strawberries. Coffee contains caffeine, an antioxidant thatprotects the skin against UV rays and slows down the photoaging of the skin.(However this does not mean you should drink coffee all the time, as we knowcaffeine is an excitant and abusing it is not good for our health.) In skincareit is especially great as an ingredient in eye creams. Tomatoes contain ferulic acid, a powerfulantioxidant that helps protect the skin from sun damage and free radicals. Freeradicals are very unstable molecules with an appetite for electrons. They tendto steal electrons from whatever other molecule they can find, including theDNA, leading to changes in our bodies that are negative. In the skin they’reresponsible for the aging process. Hazelnuts, wheat, sunflower oil/seeds, red caviar, egg yolks and almonds all contain vitamin E which is an antioxidant. Inskincare it also has a soothing effects on skin thanks to the lipids and ithelps skin retain moisture. Garlic contains caffeic acid which prevents thedegradation of pro-collagen type 1. Speaking of which… Not an antioxidant, but still essential: bone broth, beef, chicken and fish contain collagen, aprotein responsible for skin elasticity. Bone broth doesn’t come with justcollagen but also with vitamins and minerals that the body needs. If you don’t plan on eating foods that containcollagen you could always go for collagen supplements. I take my unflavouredcollagen powder in my coffee or soups (or even with just water) every singleday as I don’t want to eat meat all the time… Q5 How do you deal with your water tank athome? A5 Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now I assume the question is about an overhead tank made ofbrick and cemented outside. Rather than rectangle thewater tank in homes can be slightly hexagonal. Without going much to physicsprinciples this would avoidwhen filled with water force on walls very less. Walls should bemade with double brick work to avoid breaking. Inside tank after checking forleakage quality tiles mustbe pasted on bottom and walls. Still due to water thrust, damage totiles (top coating breaks and coming out ) is common. When tiling becomes moredamaged tiles may be changed. Tanks must becleaned once a quarter without fail by skilled workers. Neverattempt self-cleaning. I know the case of a neighbour aged about 65 fellin to water in the tank while trying to get into and difficult to bring him out . He suffered injuries. Before cleaning ensure wateroutlet is closed in the tank and not at outlet valve. Bore-well watermay bring clay. Hence cleaning should be done periodically. Bleaching powder may be usedwhile cleaning and removed fully in the end of cleaning. Only skilled persons should be employed in cleaning. Laminated thick sheet with Aluminium frame work isone of the best top covering rather than RCC slabs which may break on removingor moving over the tank. Q6 Why won't Railways restore concessionon fares for senior citizens? A6 Shubham Maurya,Rail Fan Thu Indian RailwaysTicket Booking Rule Changed! Senior Citizens Will No Longer Get Concession | Indian RailwaysLatest News: According to reports, the concession that was lifted during theCovid-19 pandemic will not be restored. According to Rail Minister, Indian railways are alreadyproviding tickets at a subsidised price. Railway Minister AshwiniVaishnaw has said that the concession on ticket prices provided to seniorcitizens will no longer be available. According to media reports, the concession was suspendedfor two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Union Minister hadearlier stated in the Lok Sabha about the move. He has reiterated this in apress conference in Chennai. Before thepandemic, men over 60 years of age got a discount of 40 per cent on railtickets. Women over 58 years of age got a discount of 50 per cent. Talking about the discount,Vaishnaw said that the Indian railways are already providing tickets are asubsidised cost. He stated that people are only charged Rs 45 per ticket andthe government has to pay Rs 100 per ticket for operational costs. Rs 2,000 CroreBurden Due to Concessions According toreports, Indian railways incur a loss of Rs 2,000 crore due to 53 concessionsit offers to citizens. The discount for senior citizens alone accounted fornearly 80 per cent of the total concessions. In the two-year period when theconcessions were lifted, railways earned additional Rs 1,500 crore in revenue. Q7 Can lemon help to lower sugar levels? A7 Lucia Garcia,Worked at Hospitals Sun Lemon is afruit recommended by the American Diabetes Association and is very suitable forpeople with diabetes. Lemons are low insugar. A medium lemon weighs 50 to 60 grams and contains only about 1.5 gramsof sugar. The glycemic indexof lemon is 34, which is a low glycemic index fruit. Lemon is a fruitwith relatively high nutritional and medicinal value. It is rich in citric acid and is called "citric acidwarehouse". Citric acidcan promote insulin secretion and play a role in lowering blood sugar levels. However, lemons can only play an auxiliary role, not a substitute for drugs. It is worthmentioning that eriocitrin is a special ingredient contained in lemons, whichother fruits and vegetables do not contain. Eriocitrin is a natural antioxidant that reducesover-acidified fat in the liver, kidneys, andblood, regulates the body's acid-base balance, and prevents diabetescomplications. My note- I have a lemon/lime tree, when fruit appears itis green, but on fully ripen changes to brown and not yellow. Though our neighbour wasusing it, somehow my wife did not like it. Recently she herself made pickleplucking two lemons while it was green. It was so tasty and I continue usingthe pickle. Lemon has to be boiled a little more time since skin is more thick.Blood sugar test I have not done. Q8 Which fruit in India is underrated? A8 Roshni Shanmugam, Studied at St.Joseph's College of Engineering3y Wood Apple is the most underrated fruit in India. Itis called as vilaampazhamin Tamil and Bel in Hindi. This fruit isfamous during festive seasons like Ramanavami, vinayakar chaturthi andgokulashtami. It has a hard and woody outershell inside which, there is a softand spongy fruit pulp. It has lots of health benefits , some of which I havementioned below. It will curedigestive problems. Improves immunity. Cures skin problems. Improves metabolism It also treatsjoint pains and hypotension in adults. There are manydifferent ways in which one can consume wood Apple. But I used to mix the fruitpulp with jaggery and eat. It's a healthy way of eating this fruit with highiron content. My note- because of the thorns in the tree andfalling down when dried, and the fruit has a peculiar smell which attractsnakes, in Kerala we were forbidden from eating it. My information duringboyhood days. Only leaves were pluckedelders making sure thorns do not pierce the foot. Q9 How often do fridges need repair? A9 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now In India most fridges comes with 10 years warranty for compressor nowadays. If properly maintained and carefully maintained, most fridges does not requireany repair. Once in threemonths clean the fridge completely and keep things neatly. Ensure the inlet airholes in each shelf are clear. Clean the top and outside of fridge every week.Do not keep unnecessary things in the shelf. Do not overload the fridge. Keepfridges away from LPG stove. If necessary have a2nd fridge than over loading a fridge. Present day fridges are quality ones andlesser priced and affordable. Keep a stabilizerand ensure current is taken through a stabilizer to fridge connector. Q10 Why do rays travel in a zig-zaginstead of in a straight line? A10 Dale P Lee, Jun 21 It is a wonderfulquestion, which cries out for a clear answer. Let's see if we got it. Lightning is an electric discharge between twopoints that are at a sufficient potential difference so that the dielectricmedium that separates them (the air) is perforated. When this happens, theelectric current encounters an absolutely inhomogeneous medium (the air):regions of greater or lesser density, areas of greater or lesser temperature, slightly different pressures over small distances, more or less humid areas... the electricity tries to reachthe opposite potential of the starting point along the path that offers theleast resistance, and all this has an influence. We can make acomparison with falling water: under perfect conditions, a drop of water, looking for the gravitational gradient, falls completely vertical; but if it has other constraints, such as rough terrain, a stream will take the closest possible path to thegradient: it will never run uphill, but it can meanders, curves, bends, shifts of all kinds, etc., which is what rivers do. It is also whathappens with the mineral diffusion between the cracks of the stones. All the above QA are from Quora website on 26 -07- 2022. Quora answers need not be 100% correct answers .
